I'm really not sure. I'm not saying he doesn't add value when he goes forward, he absolutely does. He punches above his height and weight and he's got a good reliable set-shot. But it's not like we're crying out for small forwards at the moment. In fact, quite the opposite. We are OVERstocked.

The proof will be purely in the puddin' I suppose....
He's not a small forward. More Mark Williams type.

Dimma is 183cm, that's small in modern footy. May have been different 15-20 years ago in Williams's day. Hardwick is considered a small back, no reason not to consider him a small forward.
Ginni is two cms taller.
Gunners, at 10cm taller than Dimma, is considered a medium forward these days....

Still valuable to distinguish him from Wiz, Ginni types and even from CMac and Moorey.
Different players with different styles of play, providing value in different ways.
Dimma does not play in the prototypical style of most 'small forwards' in modern footy.
If saying we're 'overstocked with smalls' in the forward line it's also important to acknowledge that Dimma is for all intents not going to play the same role as those guys.

Not that I am disagreeing with you entirely - Hardwick was used as either a crumbing forward or a lead-up forward back in his TAC Cup days and he kicked 56 goals in that season with bags of 12, 10 and 8 along the way. So saying that he could be a Mark Williams-type where despite not being 190cm+ he can still play as a lead-up forward and get the job done isn't out there. I think if he is playing in the forward line he's not going to be playing as much like Ginni or Watto but more presenting as another marking option.

As others have said its about style of play. If you want to designate people based on height then Sam Frost can't play as a small back.

Clearly Hardwick isn't Curnow, but would be a pretty hard match up to figure what type to play on him. Definitely plays taller, and adds some good aggression up in our forward half. Also he was deadly accurate with his set shots which shouldn't be under-rated. Chol, Gunston, and Hardwick is on the smaller side for the 'three talls', but when you combine with Watson, Moore, Ginnivan, CMac and potentially Breust sub, could cause more than a few headaches in an unpredictable way. If we bring the ball to ground more often than not its a very dangerous mix.

Frost, Impey, Seamus, BMac, Ryan

Plenty of options.
Yes they could but Hardwick still our best lockdown defender for small/medium forwards. He's been training mainly as a forward (doesn't need to practice defending as he has that down pat) and will play forward on occasions but will go back when required. Pretty much how he was utilised last year.

A few of our train in players today.
Ky Burgoyne, Goy Jiath (CJ's brother) & Kobe Williams.

Like the look of Kobe. In the match sim did a couple of really nice one touch gathers under pressure followed by a quick handball/kick to a teammate ……. can be overwhelming for a kid surrounded by seniors but he didn’t panic. And the boys went in pretty hard today!

Hawthorn training session - Monday 20th of January
No shows - none
Rehab group - Blanck, Mraz, Moore and Lewis
Frost and Ginnivan did drills. Frost then ran, while Ginni did some lighter match work.

We had some Box Hill players there who were involved in the match Sims.

Ky Burgoyne, Goy Jiath and Kobe Williams were at training. Kobe played in the match simulation at half back and looked really good. Quick clean hands and excellent decision making.

Max Ramsden stood out in the match simulation. He was in the forward line as a 2nd key tall. He set Newcombe up with an excellent handball in congestion, took two excellent marks and kicked one goal and hit the post with the other.

Newcombe played the match simulation as a forward and he was incredible. Kicked one and had a goal assist. Will be interesting how often he plays forward this year.

Croc kicked a goal at half forward and had some time on a win opposed to Massimo D'Ambrosio.

Both Hustwaite and Mackenzie continued their strong run of form in the middle.

Josh Ward played inside midfield for the Gold team and had a superb clean break away from a centre bounce after a Worpel handball. He then hit a lovely kick that found Croc in space.

Jack Gunston worked his way all around the field and was notable for his ability to get up the field and help out before delivering into the forward 50.

Did a drill about finding space and taking marks to draw defenders - Sam kept hammering to the group that you take the easy option available.

Mitch Lewis was kicking goals from the boundary and slotted two from an acute angle. He looks in sensational order.

Calsher was down and walking the grounds again and looked in good order. He even kicked the footy to himself a few times. He said he is feeling good but has to wait for the scans.

Battle and Seamus ran laps today as part of load management. Both didn't partake in the match simulation.

Excellent to hear that Croc is getting some time up the ground.
Incredibly happy that Ward is having a few highlights coming through now that he's over his illness!

As always thank you for the update.

I am interested to know:

-Did Ky Burgoyne and Goy Jiath play in the match sim? (If so, how did they go)

-Anything on Skaife in the match sim?

Thanks.

Thanks for the report Newmo89

Who was manning Ramma in the backline? How did CJ go?

Thanks as always! This stands out to me - given Calsher’s status I wonder if Ramadan is having a real crack at the senior team while Dear and Lewis are unavailable.
