More interesting question is if Morris gets offered $1m a year over 5 years, do we match it?

In that situation if we are very confident in getting Allen, I'd hope we don't break the balance of our payment structure and try and bank a decent 1st rd pick from Morris leaving.

If Morris is playing every game i think he's worth $500 to $750k a year to us at his age and experience.

Another few years and some 45+ goal seasons then yeah sure his next pay packet deserves a decent bump.

He'd be a fool for leaving us so early in his career. The amount of development and confidence he could get from playing in this team for another few years, he could turn into something very special (and end up earning a shitload). Going to a lesser team in his 3rd year means that is as likely to happen IMO.

If we only offer Morris $500k a year and other clubs are offering a million a year he would almost be a fool not to take it.
The 500k mark for me depends if he is playing in the 1sts or not. If he is playing every week then 750k is more the mark for the next two years imo.

Our cap will explode very quickly if we're paying 750k to players that are playing in the 2nds.

I guess that is an interesting question: If we offer him 750k and other teams are offering a million, is 250k going to be enough to pry him out?

Let's not forget, we do have Joe's money that we can share out between WAshcroft, Morris and LAshcroft.

In terms of Allen, if we get him, I'm sure we could that money from the retirees / delistings that will occur.

Essentially, key forwards (and especially freakishly gifted young ones that are proven) are hard to find, we must do whatever it takes to keep Morris.

I have questions regarding whether Logan could ever get to the highest tier of key forwards (size/athleticism questions), but he's insanely productive for his age and has shown a very high floor for his performance.

Kinda think he's already proven he's good enough to be a great #2 key forward and that is incredibly valuable. I'm sure we want to lock him up for many many years, and his team have played this smartly to get a great second contract for him.

Gettable today:
  • Beveridge thinks Allen will just focus on his footy for the next few weeks. Doesn't expect much talk about his decision.
  • Twomey compared Morris to Daniher in terms of his future potential as a key forward. Expect clubs to come hard for Morris either this year or the next time he's OOC.
  • Spoke to player agent Ben Williams about Ah Chee. Regular catch ups with Ambrogio about it, talks are progressing well. Not expecting that one to be too hard - expect him to re-sign.
  • Annable praise after the AFL Academy game on the weekend. "Will be interesting to see how [the Lions] get the picks for him" - Twomey.

The "interesting" part is that we basically already have, so not really interesting at all.

We've got 1547 points currently, assuming we again win the premiership because why not.

The discount has been reduced to 10% this year, so we can match a bid of 1718 with no further points. All picks after #1 have had their values dropped this year (to stop stockpiling of late picks) so that leaves us capable of meeting a bid of pick 6 today

Let's put pick 1 to the side because most teams aren't going to bid with pick 1. Here's what we need to get to match bids in between:
  • Pick 2: 2481 * 0.9 = 2233, for a gap of 686 points or the equivalent of pick 22.
  • Pick 3: 2178 * 0.9 = 1960, for a gap of 413 points or the equivalent of pick 31.
  • Pick 4: 1962 * 0.9 = 1766, for a gap of 219 points or the equivalent of pick 41.
  • Pick 5: 1795 * 0.9 = 1616, for a gap of 69 points or the equivalent of pick 50.
We've seen teams repeatedly keen to offload late picks, so we could basically sit pat, trade back, and still match pick 4 on. Pick 3 would require some work by Dom, and only pick 2 would strain the pick bank balance.

But what does it look like if we trade out 3 first round picks for a player that isn't even available????

We're getting Harley Reid???

Morris is about as locked into our seniors as you can be under the age of about 22.
I think thats fair. I'm personally not offering him more than about 750k a year to stay in that case and if he wants his million a year straight away then I think that starts to break our salary cap payment structure. W.Ashcroft, McCluggage, Andrews, Neale erc. would rightly be saying we'll take 1.5 a year in that case (i suspect none of them are earning more than around $1m a year over the next few years

I say re-sign Morris for 2/3 years at say 700k (with some performance clauses) and then he can get a fatter pay cheque after he's had a couple of 45+ goal seasons and is our number 1 or 2 best forward. If he does that, at the end of the 2 or 3 years he'll be looking at $15 million plus offers and potentially be a multiple premiership player.

Hippy: 27 year old key forward. 182 Career Games (including a year out with an acl injury). 272 Career Goals. Club Leading Goals in 2018

Not bad! Lets get another one of those then. ;)
Off topic but I’m ready for #E#Eric200
Excited that there are so many players that are hitting 200 the next couple years that are here long term. Genuinely could see Clugs break the games record for the club.

I have some faith in the club that we are pursuing Allen within the limitations of our salary cap for the short and long term with the other talent we have. Same with our medical staff and their ability to get players back on the park.

West Coast have been infamous for a lot of niggling persistent injuries ever since they have moved into their new training base. I think it’s something we can resolve like Linc and Adams.

Plus we didn’t pick up anyone big and had Joe retire over the offseason. There were some rumours we gave some players extra pay this year for reduced pay size later. I think we are playing our cards well and looking to get better in whatever ways we can reasonably do.

Re-signing Morris is a top priority.

The Allen and salary cap talk is interesting.

Contracts ending in 2025:
Starce - Stays, likley increase if he is healthy
Bruce - Stays, likely increase but still depth
Ah Chee - Stays, definite increase
McKenna - Unsure but if he stays, you would think it would be on less money. He is depth now rather than a lock.
Craven - Unsure but doubtful his wage changes meaningfully if he stays.
Fort - Stay, on similar money.
Gardiner - Stays if he doesn't do another ACL. On less money than previously you would think.
Joyce - Stays, on similar money.
Zorks - As above
Robertson - Goes. I like him, but he is really unlikely to get any games unless we have a catastrophic run of injuries.
Tunstill - Stays, similar money.
Linc - Depends on his ACL. Could retire.
Logan - Stays, if his next season salary is set by the CBA, expect big increase in 27&28.
Beecken - No idea.
Lester - Stays, no idea what his contract situation is but deserves a good contract for at least one more year.
Day - Retires.

On top of that, Brandon Ryan is OOC in 2026 and you would think we don't renew his contract.
If we have pushed some money to players this year to make up for the Joe, we should have a bit of money freed up for next year and beyond.
I don't think we will break the bank chasing Allen but I am confident we have a good amount of money to play with without being in danger of losing guys like Morris because we don't have the coin. The team knows bringing in high paid recruits is great when you have the cash but with a salary cap, you do have to play money ball.
There is still a good amount to play out for us with player contracts this year with 16 contracts ending.

I doubt we will be looking into Jamarra, I get the feeling that it is Oscar Allen or no one for us.

Okay, let's see him actually do it before declaring he's better than Allen. He's averaging 2.2 goals a game so far, which is a great start, and I hope he builds on it.

Regardless, think about how much more dangerous Morris would be if defences were sending their third best tall defender to him again.

Did not say he was better, but that is my belief. If you offered me Morris or Allen on our list, it is Morris every day of the week.

Logan has well proven he is capable of kicking 50 - which is what I was replying to.

............ u18 Australia match vs Richmond VFL on Sunday.

............................................

Of most interest for me though was Mohammed Yassine from Richmond. I Know nothing about him, but he also caught my eye in the VFL against the lions in Round 3. He has pace to burn and is a very good kick in general play and for goal. Not sure of his game time in either game, but his 2 goals, 1 Tackle and 1 Clearance from 7 Possessions in the VFL game shows he is very effective when he gets the ball. If I get a chance I will try and put some vision together from the above two games.

For future reference (when considering any potential small forward replacements)

Clips of Mo Yassine from the first three rounds of VFL 2025.
The pixelation and sound defects on some of the clips are as broadcast.
(ps You may want to turn down the volume)

Mohammed Yassine #52
Richmond VFL BIO: 21 yo 177cm Half Forward/Wing

(I see as a small forward)

And if Allen was playing for us this year and Morris for them would you expect the same stats?
That applies to any player moving clubs be it higher or lower on the ladder.

What is your opinion, would Allen be better at Brisbane than Morris at the Eagles.
If so, would there be much difference in the stats.
It is really just hypothetical so no right or wrong answer.
I was just showing the stats so far this year

I would be okay with Allen coming to the Lions as long as we don't lose Morris because Allen costs too much.
Lots to play out in 2025. Joe may get sick of no media attention. ;)
