Oppo Camp 2025 Hawks Death Ride

Wonder when you’ll be able to trade picks conditionally or protect them.

Guaranteeing the trade involves using the set of picks that are lower.

There's trades in the NHL that rely on how many games they win with the newly acquired player in their side and if they make play-offs. Some crazy stuff.

I'll believe it when I see it.

Don't forget they lost clearances by a significant amount to the youngest team of the round last week, to the point Mitchell said they shouldn't have won.

They look amazing when things are on their terms but it won't always go their way.
TBH, I'm not that worried about clearances or other stats.
The only thing I look at is wins and losses.

Meh, who cares imo.

Interesting to be hindsight warriors but did anyone on this board think Hawks would be 3-0 and Carlton winless at this stage of the season?

It's a gamble that had justifiable reasoning and it could be a gamble we lost. Worse things have happened, like Gold Coast trading a whole bunch of picks for our 2018 first round which turned out to be pick 18.

Well, they're a good indication of how a side is traveling, because then people go "What happened to XX??!?!" when the evidence was there all along they weren't really going so well.

Hawthorn are strong, don't get me wrong, but it's very telling that even Mitchell thought they shouldn't have won against Essendon, based on the stats.

It's not about being "hindsight warriors".
People were saying before a ball was bounced it was the wrong decision.

Some pundits like Nathan Buckley came out and said he didn't think Carlton would play finals and he wasn't the only one.

If the Hawks finish top 4 and Carlton miss, it will end up being real costly.

Like I said before, nothing we can do about it, but it is frustrating.

How is this hindsight, seriously?

Prior to the season Hawthorn were shorter priced odds than Carlton to finish top 4 and top 8 and for obvious reasons- they were the form side of the competition over the last few months of the year, had finished higher than Carlton and recruited far better. It wasn't ridiculous to think Carlton would finish higher but it was against the trend.

I can't help but think there was some weird circular thinking going on- the club didn't want to admit to themselves Barrass was a great pickup who would vastly improve hawthorn because then they'd have to admit to themselves they'd ****ed up his contract negotiations and let a genuinely elite player walk rather than pay him what he was worth.

We took an educated gamble last year and 3 rounds in, it looks like it’s not going to pay off.

Big whoop. It’s not like we could’ve predicted the future - hindsight is always a wonderful thing.

They’re also just draft pick numbers, it’s not like this decision is completely ruining our draft hand. We’ll still have plenty of opportunity to pick some young talent and/or use the many picks we have in trades.

Also it’s still only round 2.

The ladder after Rd 2 last year...

Even better, the ladder after Rd 12...

You make some good points as it is early.

It will be a "big whoop" if Hawks finish top 2 or 3 and Carlton miss the 8.
We could be talking 7 or 8 spots and the draft hand we got for TB won't look that great.

It's not a hindsight thing.
A lot of people were predicting the Hawks to rise.

You could justify taking either team's picks if we're being honest.

Really no point getting worked up over it as the decision has been made and it can't be changed.

This draft looks like an even/good depth one which is good

I don't think Carlton don't have a huge injury list TBH.

Yeah and a lot of people - justifiably - predicted us to slide in 2018 - it's a big reason why Gold Coast were happy to hand over plenty of second round picks for our first rounder in the 2017 trade period.

I also thought we should have went with Carlton's picks for Barrass, don't get me wrong.

It's an educated gamble that we are losing. Great. 'Big whoop', as you say.

Sure, it's not filled with Cripps, Curnow and McKay, but you need more than 23 players in a season, majority of that list are contending for spots in the lower half of the match day squad. Cincotta, Durdin, Fantasia, Hollands, Newman, Pittonet and their pick 3 in Jagga Smith would be very handy right now.

In really it wasnt a "gamble", I dont recall the exact betting but Blues were either in front of the Hawks or they were even.

The club admitted at the time it was a line ball decision and it looks like we picked wrong at this stage. Admittedly, not helped at all by the Blues injuries.

I think it wont ultimately hurt us too much. Hawks will likely finish around 4th and Blues around 8th-10th.

The only way it does hurt us is if the bottom falls out of the Blues but they have a good list and will come good once MacKay and Curnow get fit again.

Wow! how does the steward not know 19 players are on the field?
He didn't watch 1 run on without someone coming off. I mean they are meant to be watching if they put a toe on the wrong side of the interchange gate painted on the field...

Im not going to pretend I was saying take the Blues' picks! I was curious as to the choice at the time. As to me picking between Hawks and Blues in the last 20 years would be like picking between us and the Dockers if we were both hovering around the 8 with similar finishing positions.
Which team has a history of not handling expectations? And which team once they build will end up as contenders eventually?
Still a gamble but play the odds.
