List Mgmt. 2025 Draft & Trade Hypotheticals

Would be nice to draft a guy that can just win the ball a bucketload

We have shifted too far to the impact player and we just don't have a true ball winner so everything thinks 20 touches oh they didn't have the worst game etc

Sheldrick and Cleary are both the types you speak of, albeit both still developing.

Sheldrick may not be on the list next year though.

The problem is we have taken defenders and inside mids with late picks, which shows those positions are not exactly a priority for us.

We’ve had to fix other things and took Logan early that’s looking better than Will Phillips at least.

I'd actually look at Neil Erasmus or Henry Hustwaite who can't get look ins at their respective clubs because they are too good for 2nds etc. Or just take a guy in the rookie/late national draft that is a mature age midfielder
Draft Riley's mate Dom Brew in the mid season draft.

Not giving up on this year but get a big bodied mid to help Heeney and get a tall forward who can Mark. The rest we can make do with.

Trade one or two of the outside showpony players there’s some with value

We have no list spots currently, so need to see what happens between now and MSD on May 28. I know last year we added Buller late to the inactive list, to open up the spot for Hanily.

I named Andrew a little while back - with a 10 week recovery (more likely 12), that leaves very little window for a VFL return. Another nominee would be Fox, given there's no set timeline for his recovery.

Blakey

Fair question but whoever I list will probably piss someone off, but you have to trade someone with Value to get Value.

Papley back to Victoria.

For the right deal

Sheldrick will probably be off the list for next year unless he can start showing the performances of last night more consistently and actually shove his name into contention if he goes back into the VFL .

Cleary is developing but we need more than just hope that 1 or 2 guys will be the fix in the midfield. We kept saying that Sheldrick will be the fix as he was our only developing mid before Cleary got drafted.

We don't need 100 half back flankers or wingers (Kirk, Leidler, Paton, Lloyd) can all go and we can grab an extra mid on top of King in the draft/trading.

Think its realistic to say we could move on/retire these guys in the offseason (Fox least certain)
Rampe
Lloyd
(Fox)
Francis
Kirk
Leidler
Paton

7 spots including 3 main list spot players and 4 rookie spot players

Could also see more turnover but we definitely need to move on some of the guys that we are hoping to return back to their best

I think we need to keep an open mind on this season and see how returning players come back.

That said, I hope the club is preparing now for what we need to do if we are no longer in the mix.

I am concerned we lack one elite talent up our spine: KPF, bull mid and potentially KPD.

If players don’t step up this year, I think we should be ruthless at the trade table.

I don’t rate the leadership of our senior players - I think you would need to go back pre-Maxfield to find a swans team with poorer leaders. The only senior player I wouldn’t consider trading is Heeney.

I’ll be brave and stick my neck out. The players whose trade value could be higher than their value for us could include: Papley, Lloyd, Florent and JMac.

I’d include Mills as well, but here’s the thing - I couldn’t see many clubs interested at the asking price. His long contract and self-inflicted injuries have been a disaster for us, topped up by the club making him sole captain, which makes it complex to move him on. If he can’t get right this year though, I think a bandaid may need to pulled Hannebery style.

Trade out 2-3 and you create space to have a run at elite players to straighten out spine. I’d be open to JUH. Not sure what bull mids are available.

In the meantime, put lots of time into developing our future leaders (who aren’t where they need to be) and reduce the size of the leadership group match our depth of talent (and announce the damn thing so they are accountable!). I’d go with 4: Heeney, Rowbottom, Gulden and Melican.

The best thing I could hope for is to end up with egg on my face. Mills to return in form and leading from the front (selflessly). Papley not far behind. Make it happen boys.

Why is Fox least certain? He'd be 2nd most behind Rampe for me.

I'd also add Adams

People never like trading the "good "
players then wonder why we lack in areas
and don't get it done when it matters. nothing wrong with trading a guy with value before he falls.

Lots of overreaction on here based on last night, even from the fanbois who think Longmire/Beatson could/can do no wrong

You don’t need a gun key forward to win a premiership, and we have our hands full with our academy picks anyway

You need a forward who can mark

100% agree. Won't have quality picks outside of the academy boys but we can still get quality players with picks in the 60s or the rookie draft. Time to start picking mature age midfielders

Think King will be a great edition next year. Could play the 3rd forward role and give us more speed in the forward line whilst also pinch hitting in the midfield (and then make the transition to the midfield over 2-3 years)
He looks a talent but is still very raw. If you to compare him to similar young forwards like Caddy from Bombers or Duursma from North, I'd say he's tracking in a similar fashion. Neither are locks for their respective teams as second year players.

He will start out as a forward like that of Duurs or Caddy but I truely believe he will transition into a mid/for hybrid with more midfield than forward time but we know that takes time (Cleary etc)
