Leadership is a totally different set of skills to coaching.

You can be a CEO of a telecommunications business and then go be a CEO of an education consultancy company. You don't need to know anything about either of those things to be successful.

You can sometimes tell who has never been in leadership roles.

I had been told he had decided to sign on with GWS. And as I said, it's not my usual source of info so take it with a grain of salt, but I think if GWS were pressuring him to make a decision and nothing was mentioned at the BNF, it does seem likely he doesn't stay.

That or he simply won't be pressured to make a choice until he's 100% comfortable and will sit on it another day or two.

Hope my Intel is wrong and we manage to snag him!

Perhaps it’s now outdated but Crows certainly did this once. In 2004, Stenglein requested a trade back to Eagles. He finished (I feel an artificially high) second in the B&F that year. Main point was Crows publicly pointed to this high finish in the B&F and demanded a very good pick from the Eagles and recd it - higher than expected at the time.

Well I think the club the player is leaving would almost certainly use it. I was meaning the destination club using it.

I guess my concern is that we need a "Director of Coaching" that can actually direct and reign in Matthew Nicks. If we're not going to sack him, then he needs to get a lot better at coaching. That's what you'd hope a role above Nicks would be doing, ensuring the entire coaching panel improves, getting them to work together, cutting out the stupidity.

If we're hiring someone that doesn't have that experience base to draw on, how is he going to effectively manage Nicks who actually has experience in that head coaching role? Would Nicks respect him and learn from him? I mean I hope so but the man is stubborn.
I think fans want the club to hire someone who can "reign in" Matthew Nicks.

The club doesn't want that, though.

Fans want Nicks to pay for the fact that he underachieved last season, and to have people above him getting us ready for the inevitable sacking.

The club seem to believe that Nicks needs more support, that he was left managing too many areas and that he wasn't given the resources to succeed.

That's what it seems like at least.

It's the same logic you're applying here though.

You're using Fagan to justify his appointment as though there's some correlation between their career paths and success when there's not.

As George said before, Rowey has been saying for weeks that the club has been struggling to attract candidates for this role so he's clearly been one of the few people to show any interest and was clearly a mile down the shopping list.

I'm not writing him off, I'm just calling it as it is that it's a very uninspiring hire and a "you'll do" appointment.
It's a bit underwhelming, because we were all expecting a Stewie Dew type - someone who is a name.

Ultimately though, he has a very professional resume and seems like he brings some good credentials to the role.

It does address one of our key needs - we were obviously understaffed for coaching assistance, and he comes from an excellent program. And I like seeing coaches who weren't ex-AFL players.

Getting in a coach from a side who has been a constant finalists for the last 5 years and just won a premiership seems like good signing to me.

Much better then bringing in SANFL coaches.
