Last time around we just weren't up to it. Close but not there. I think Geelong are a quality side, level above Essendon. If we are to be a contender this season then we win this one. We have made some improvements, we have made some changes and we are playing pretty well and I think the improvement is coming.

A lot of players potentially coming back. We could inject some serious talent and run into the team.

Boyd Weitering Kemp
Saad McGovern Newman
Hollands Cripps Acres
Cincotta Curnow Cerra
Williams McKay Martin
DeKoning Walsh Hollands
Cowan Hewett Kennedy Fogarty
Motlop

IN: Motlop*, Cerra, Martin
OUT: Durdin*, Carroll, Owies

Big changes from last time if this is right. IN: Cerra, Cincotta, Martin, McGovern, Motlop, Fogarty. OUT: Binns, Owies, Carroll, Cottrell, Durdin, Pittonet. So a much better side on paper. Williams forward, DeKoning rucking solo, Cincotta forward/tagging, Hollands in the middle. We've made changes that have improved the side.

Would love to see Cerra spend time forward. He was able to impact forward for Freo, he has been good drifting forward for us. Might look after his hamstrings. He's a great rotating partner for Hollands as a forward/mid.

Hollands has been huge for us on the ball. It would be a mistake to interrupt that. I'd be giving him more minutes than Cerra who can have an easier game coming back from another hamstring.

E Hollands and Cerra to spend some time on the wing when Acres and O Hollands rest. That works well. E Hollands is a good winger and Cerra was projecting as an elite winger early career.

DeKoning rucking solo has been massive for us. Having him playing big midfield minutes has become a huge weapon because he gives us not just an extra rover but an extra good rover. The more time he spends on the ball the better we are.

In saying that, moving away from three giant forwards has improved our forward pressure and ground level play as well. So we must not go back to two genuine rucks.

Weitering needs to go to Cameron. Hawkins is his usual matchup but Hawkins looks about cooked. Isn't impacting. Cameron is their biggest threat. I remember Andrew Walker owning Hawkins years ago. Things have changed but an athlete who will out run him and jump all over him will work for us now as it did then IMO. McGovern first crack, Kemp at times. Both will be too quick and jump all over him.

Big midfield rotations are a strength of ours in this game. Keeping our mids fresh is so important. We rarely lose when we have massive midfield rotations. 6 players who are genuine onballers and Fogarty who is part time. The key to us winning is using them all in there and coming home strong over this mob with fresher legs as Sydney did to them.

Cincotta playing as that plus 1 tagger will be a great asset again.

Martin, Hollands, Cerra and Williams getting around the forward line gives us a lot of talent and some pretty strong inside 50 kicking.

Motlop, hopefully doesn't have to play massive minutes. He can come on late in the game and give us some burst up forward. Go in with an excess of mids so we don't need the sub to me midfield cover. We also don't need the sub to be defender cover as Cincotta or Williams can always go back should we need another defender. Picking a forward as sub makes complete sense.

We need to get physical with Geelong on the middle early and sustain that. Apply a lot of pressure and hard tackling. Try and get our intercepting and outside game going. We have midfield rotations so the effort in there should be really strong.

Dangerfield, you do to him what opposition sides do to Walsh. Stop him running forward and coming out the front of stoppages. I'd be getting in there and hitting him hard and laying on a heep of body all game. Kennedy and Hewett rotating and just hit him with fresh opposition. But we don't want to forget the others in there, Cat's have depth.

This is a really important game. Redemption is one of those things, cementing our spot in the top 4, particularly second spot is the main goal. 2nd spot, if we can hold it and go into finals in that spot would be massive. IMO 2nd is the prime position to finish and should be our goal. Swans will finish 1st. We want to go into finals and play 4th with a second chance. This is a long way away but playing the other top teams, this is where you make it happen. Make no mistake, this is an 8 point game.

Let’s not get beaten by what we know and what we learnt from our last match.

1.Put the clamps on Cameron.

2.’Tag’ Stewart.

3.CincottaDanger/Holmes

I'd put Cincotta on Miers. He comes up the ground so much he's practically a mid and he's arguably their most dangerous player with ball in hand

If Cincotta is good enough to play midfield - which is what tagging Merrett was - then he is a midfield player.
As for Cowan on Martin - that was text book follow your direct opponent.

the be accountable for your direct opponent - is nathan Buckley's view on the tagging meme and I agree with him.

I don't think the "tag" thing is as real as some in the media are making out.

Doubt we park Young on Cameron and let him kick a bag. We sent our best key defender to Hawkins who is pretty much a decoy these days. Weitering goes to Cameron and keeps him honest this time.

Doubt Touhy kicks 3 in this one either. We have clamped down the defensive game of our half forwards.

We dominated disposal and inside 50s last time. We just badly lacked class. I think McKay and Curnow up and going. Add Williams, Cerra, Hollands, Martin, Motlop up forward, that is an upgrade in forward potency and our kicking inside 50 from this group changes things for the better.

Take a ruck out for a runner.

Historically we match up well and have a good record against the cats. Potentially we will field one of the strongest sides we have fielded all season.

I think we will win and won't be surprised if we beat them in the same manner that Sydney did. Cat's look a bit cooked, lost 1 out of the last 5.

It’s a modern tag

4. Don't let geriatric Irishman kick 3 goals

Weiters couldn't keep up with Cameron. He roams all over the ground sometimes even playing down back or on ball for stages these days. Stick him on Porkins and if he's beating him comfortably maybe he can sag off him and play a bit looser to intercept more entries.

It's funny with Cameron, both last year and this year he looked like an out and out champion early, copped a concussion and came back as a significantly lesser player.

It's provably Kemp for him next week. I think that the Cats will try and keep him closer to goal next week as his roaming up the ground has led to not much of late.

Could Gov take Cameron?

This new HTB interpretation that requires Players to improve their awareness and react more quickly with a Handball or kick, this will be good for Players who are a bit slow, particularly in congestion.

Walsh, Cerra, Hewitt, Cripps, Kennedy all need to sharpen up their skills when about to be tackled or when tackled.
Cripps needs to do more than just Handball into the air. You don't see Collingwood Players doing that ... they always seem to offload the ball to one of their Players running past.

Geelong are a high pressure tackling side, so it will be interesting to see whether our mids can cope with it ... cause I'd like them to sharpen up considerably by the time we meet Coll'd ... probably the best pressure team going around.

Reckon a fully fit Marchbank would be our best option to go with him given his aerobic capacity. Not sure we have a good match up for him, frankly not many teams in the league do when he's on song.
It’s a bit like Charlie or Harry moving up the ground - very hard to cover.

Gov is about the only bloke I can see who has the speed, size, smarts and athleticism to run with Cameron.

Having said that Cameron hasn’t been setting the world on fire recently.

Outside of your A graders this should be standard….Cerra is an A grader, he comes in

I don’t care if Cerra takes another month, so long as he’s ready when he comes back. Have to take squad and team management mentality from here on out. We need him in September.
