I think competition for spots is going to be a great driver for better output

Just look at our lists.

Our bottom 6-8 players, will know that they have to perform to hold their spot - as there are multiple players eager to step up.
This is a great problem to have :D

I don't think JSOS is in our best side as any one particular thing, but he does bring versatility that our team otherwise lacks. I think that gets him in most weeks for sure. He might not be "Plan A", but he's critical to Plan B in almost all versions of it!

Would be interesting if he was allowed to play solely as a forward. Think it was early '22 and he was the marks on a lead man of the comp.

Add the improved overhead marking plus better goal kicking and there’s a pretty handy 3rd forward there, if the late ‘23 version can resume in ‘24.

I think with the 23 we will see both Pitto and TDK play most games and furthermore, I see JSOS as a standalone forward alongside the two big boys.

Plan A should be Pitto starting centre square ruck and TDK around the ground with Pitto dropping back to take back half contests and look for marks above the pack. Having SOS and Jack up forward exclusively gives our forward line a balance and pressure that'll only serve us well.

Then it'll be the small brigade makeup that emerges to best support those 4.

SOS and Jack? Did you mean TDK and Jack up forward?

5 on the bench next year, i see us playing TDK and Pitto in the same side
I see it still a debate, and maybe a bit from column A and some from column B.

If TDK takes a giant step forward and can run out 80% of games week in, week out, the pinch hitter, with JSOS, Crippa and Harry(forward) doing a bit of ruck work to make up the balance becomes an option.

If Pitto returns to his pre injury form/trajectory, bringing that big body bollocking at the stoppages to add some protection to our mids, it will be difficult to leave him out. TDK was struggling as a forward until the back half of last year, clearly dreading taking shots at goal, his confidence was down. At the tail end of last season TDK was backing himself and kicking goals, happy to take his opportunities. He is now a genuine key forward option and could play the 60% forward option very effectively, allowing us to utilise Harry in one of his more potent roles working up the ground to offer both attacking and defensive options, as can Tom himself and Charlie. Add a fit Martin, E.Hollands, Fantasia and possibly Moir as forward foils, along with Mots and Durds developing and we can add so many layers up forward.

Our ruck combination will be quite pivotal. I genuinely see a somewhat rotational model. Let’s keep all options open for the pointy end of the season and hopefully some rotation keeps key players at their peak, rather than reach the finals with players gritting their teeth to overcome niggles and fatigue.

We lose momentum big time with Silvagni in the ruck … forget it !!
5 man bench = TDK & Pittonet.
Silvagni will need to take his marking and goal kicking to another level in the reserves as forward back up.
Carlton are now firmly in the premiership window.
Forget the surname … that’s the reality …

I think his marking improved this season. Not sure about kicking.

I think he needs to improve a bit more in these two key areas for a third tall.

Pittonet is non-existent around the ground. He doesn't add much else other than being a tap ruckman.

SOS is a better kick and better mark.

Sos is better in front of goals.

SOS adds more pressure around the contest and if he attended the same amount of contests as Pittonet he'd get more clearances.

It comes down to hitouts and if you believe that stat turns into more clearances to advantage.

Every year I have him in that 22-24 spot, but with injuries, plays most weeks

Again this year I don't have him in the 22

Agreed. If everyone is fit I don't see him starting the year but would certainly see him getting games, very hard for anybody to go a full season without missing these days.

Has versatility but I actually see his best spot as a "tall" small forward, not a lead up forward or set shot target but someone who can create around the pack and read the chaos well. Plus definitely an adequate backup ruck and given Pitt's in particular suspect durability
should get plenty of opportunity.

What’s with the double banger nose job with Kempy…nasty blood nose.
It's good content

Two ruckman should still be avoided at all costs unless they are exceptional in either the position or competent in a second role. TDK is the closest thing we have to the latter, and his ability to create scores all but vanishes after a decent chunk of ruck time.

Pittonet is neither, and you're chancing his entire spot in the team around direct taps to advantage without enough evidence of fast hands and fast breaks from midfield.

This is new information to me, something I have never seen before in my life

It's not as though any of them are dominant forward or around the ground & it'll be interesting to see who, if any, take steps forward across preseason.
As a ruckman, Pittonet has the biggest impact on our stoppage game, for that reason, I have him as first ruck with TDK/JSOS fighting for the forward-ruck role - ideally, both will improve their work forward of centre to give us a genuine third tall option.

You absolutely nailed it - I was going to include it in my blurb yesterday, but wasn't sure how to word it. JSOS has a real presence about him on the track, and now one of the more senior members of the squad.

I was going to write something along the lines of "JSOS is an automatic selection in 2024 - not negotiable", but didn't want to start any punch-ons with the audience ;)

For mine, I'd be starting TDK as our starting ruck, and JSOS just giving him the occasional chop-out when he needs a break. The beauty with Jack is that he just gets by as the 2nd string ruck, but is a dangerous forward - so can also rotate through there becoming the 7th forward. Gives us flexibility.

As much as I like Pitto, I reckon we're too top heavy with him and TDK in the side - especially as he doesn't have a secondary role. If big H can take on some of the rucking responsibilities up forward Daniher style, Pitto really becomes surplus.
Agree 100%
Jack didn't win a lot of taps, but was a genuine rover and I thought we looked better in the clearances with him there.
He's also a far better forward than either TDK or Pitto (lol) and he was looking really dangerous up there before he went down late in the season. Very smart at getting under the radar and into good spots, or just sheer mongrel and repeat efforts.
He got a bit of confidence too and it really showed.

As much as I love JSOS and hope that he finds a spot in our team - if anyone takes a very close look at that last quarter versus Melbourne in the closing stages Pittonet made a couple of very important taps versus Gawn which I dont think JSOS would have managed.

JSOS is underrated I feel.

Probably ahead of Martin in our forward line as the third tall type player.

He never looks quick, but he's great at finding good options and being a threat.

With a full pre-season and a clean run, could really shine

CARLTON

IN: Elijah Hollands (Gold Coast), Orazio Fantasia (Port Adelaide), Ashton Moir, Billy Wilson (draft), Matt Carroll (rookie draft), Rob Monahan (category B rookie)
OUT: Ed Curnow, Lachie Plowman (retired), Paddy Dow (St Kilda), Zac Fisher (North Melbourne), Josh Honey, Lochie O’Brien, Sam Philp (delisted)
AVAILABLE LIST SPOTS: 0
Hollands has the potential to be a great recruit for the Blues as a high-impact forward who can go through the midfield. The brother of Carlton wingman Ollie Hollands had limited opportunity at the Suns, playing only 14 games in three seasons, including none in his first year coming off a knee injury. Fantasia is a punt, but can change games if he can stay on the park. A big if, judging on recent history. Although Dow and Fisher did not play in Carlton’s finals campaign, they were still relatively young and on the fringes, featuring in 22 matches between them last season.
Verdict: List neutral for 2024

Hun, no mention of Duffy

I feel some overrate him, some underrate him because it's hard to nail down his value or role.
He's all heart & his flexibility is valuable, the knock is that he doesn't really have a standout position or attribute.
He showed some genuine promise in the weeks prior to injury, hopefully that's a sign of future output & he can make a position his own.
