Jason Horne-Francis isn’t just on the cusp of joining the top echelon of AFL midfielders, he could be a serious contender for the league’s top individual honour. Fresh off finishing second to Zak Butters in the 2024 Power best and fairest count, Horne-Francis on Saturday was at his electric best against St Kilda, showing off his trademark speed and power from stoppages to finish with 31 disposals, seven score involvements, seven marks and six clearances Dual premiership Kangaroo David King gushed over Horne-Francis post-game, telling Fox Footy: “He’s just a machine. This is probably the No. 1 player in the competition that’s most likely to go into that Brownlow Medal contention. We talk a lot about Hayden Young going into the midfield and having an influence, we talk a lot about Patrick Cripps and Lachie Neale who are already there. But this guy has elevated over the last 12 months into that bracket. How high can he go? He’s just impossible to stop at centre bounce clearances, he can go forward and kick goals … 31 touches doesn’t really tell the full story, because the way and manner he plays – it sets the tone.” The other big win for the Power was Jeremy Finlayson. In the absence of injured teammates Esava Ratugolea and Brandon Zerk-Thatcher, the Power might’ve unearthed an attacking weapon in Finlayson, who starred patrolling the back 50m arc to finish with 29 disposals and 13 marks (3 intercept) while going at 75 per cent efficiency by foot. Dual All-Australian Ruby Schleicher told Fox Footy: “Ken Hinkley you genius. He (Finlayson) was involved in everything coming out of the back-half – and this is exactly what they wanted from him. He’s such a good ball-user and really calm with ball in-hand. The brutal defenders, like Aliir Aliir and Ratugolea, will come in and really hit bodies, while Finlayson really brings that calm energy to the backline, which they’ve been searching for.” Brownlow Medallist Gerard Healy added: “He’s been terrific – a rebirth.”

Hinkley a genius?
Let's wait to see if it was his decision to make that move - or someone else

Let’s not forget David King ranked our list in front of only Richmond and West Coast.

Yet he was raving about us all Saturday.

The guy seems to think no one notices how much he hedges his bets with his opinions, or changes his opinion completely depending on which way the breeze is blowing.

It's gonna keep me up at night this.

It's impossible to shake the feeling of impending doom that is this season. Loss of key players, coaching instability, horror fixture, injuries mounting. Finals already seem a distant possibility.
We still have plenty of talent but that fixture might be the worst in Afl history. Once again the Afl shows no respect to our club.

If we're good enough to win a premiership we have to win at least three wins in a row against the best teams. Give us a hard draw I say, it will battle harden us. If we fail we weren't good enough anyway. Enough false dawns built on easy draws.

It's the burn out factor from a tough draw. Our top midfielders are always cooked going into finals coz of taking a major role in winning H&A games due to our shocking forward efficiency. With our new recruits hopefully this will change.

I don't buy this narrative of being burnt out. Last year we mishandled Rozee. Butters was injured in the last game of the home and away season. Most teams don't routinely rest their best players and those same players are just as crucial to their teams final standings. I think our finals loses all rest on having the dumbest game plan imaginable for eight years, that every coach in the league knows how to dismantle if they have good enough cattle.

I agree with the bolded part.
