We gave up Heads and pick 40, get Van Loon and 51. To use a male analogy, it would be like giving up Blakey and 40 and getting a Darcy Gardiner and 51 back.

So in other words, we got royally done over. Can only imagine we did it as a favour to get Heads to PA as apparently her partner is moving to Adelaide.

Her partner already plays for Sturt but she is moving across with him

Van Loon is a tall on baller that has been used as a lockdown defender at Essendon. We got a pretty poor return on the deal for these girls

Think we need to go tall at the draft but don't know if #4 is in the right range for that but we also need to get top quality talent in the door.

SYDNEY has finally swooped on North Melbourne midfielder Lulu Pullar.

The Swans parted with picks No.49 and 51 to eventually break the deadlock in negotiations with the Kangaroos, after Pullar requested a trade following the side's flag success a fortnight ago.

Pullar was part of North Melbourne's 2023 Grand Final side, but found it difficult to break into an unbeaten Kangaroos lineup across the most recent season and managed only one senior game all year.

However, Sydney's move for Pullar will likely close the door on the club's chances of sealing a deal for Carlton youngster Amelia Velardo. The Swans had been interested in potentially trading for Velardo, but now appear unlikely to progress with any move despite having met with the player earlier this week. – Riley Beveridge

Our first draft pick:

Bugger! That's the second time I've gotten ahead of myself regarding the draft. I fear I have been over optimistic to think that we would get O'Hehir with pick 4 (leaving Harris out). My logic was reasonably sound: the top 3 were considered to be Harris, Centra and Fish, with Rasheed and O'Hehir next best rated. However, what I overlooked is that Rasheed has made it plain she is reluctant to go interstate leading to her likely being left on the board. And that changes the equation significantly to if the selection were based on footy talent (and character) alone.

If O'Hehir is gone, I think we should seriously consider drafting Rasheed despite her reservations. There have been a number of players drafted to Sydney over the years who really didn't want to come but grew to love the place and have long careers. Michael O'Loughlin was famously one of them and I think there are some more recent examples that have worked out well too. I'm not majorly enamoured of Rasheed: she comes across as a little bit entitled and immature.

Alternatively, I am warming to Emma McDonald a strong, contested marking 179 cm key forward. https://central.rookieme.com/afl/player/emma-mcdonald/ This fills a key area of need and is about where she is rated. Another alternative that others have mentioned is Lou Painter but personally I'd prefer a tall because I think it fits better with our list needs. Plus, perhaps unlike others, I feel like we have Painter types (like Kennedy, Ham and McEvoy) on our list already. It was the same reason I was a little hesitant about chasing Charlie Rowbottom (although I ultimately decided she would be worth our first pick if she was willing to come).

If we want to put a cat among the pigeons, we could bid on Sophie McKay - which will royally piss off the Blues and Blues fans. Of course, we'd have to be prepared for them not to match if they have another player in their sights at pick 5.

The other player who I like but who would be a bit of a reach compared to the rankings I've seen is Poppy Scholz. Tall, late birthday, lots of upside, good pedigree.

If we miss out on O'Hehir, I wonder if there's any chance we could trade back e.g. our pick 4 for Richmond's picks 10 & 18? Personally, if the player we really want at our early pick is gone (for me that's O'Hehir), then that's a deal I think is worth doing. Of course I don't know if Richmond would be interested.

Don't like the way that this trade period has gone but fear that this might be the way it goes until AFLW contracts get that real boost they need. Players need to get the best money available and moving away from Sydney is pretty much going to get that.

If we miss O'Hehir McDonald looks good for mine. Solid but athletic. Still our #1 need especially losing Smith. Wouldn't bother anything else.

This trade period is definitely a bit of a head scratcher for me. More than that it's perturbing - I need some reassurance. Chris Keane please stand up and tell me how great we've done.

Not sure if you're aware or not but Chris Keane has no formal involvement in AFLW trading and drafting. It's run by Kate Mahoney and Scott Gowans with input from some others, I can't remember them all, but including our W performance analyst, Phoebe Carter. I think last draft Chris Keane may have had some informal involvement in the process but I'm not sure and I don't know if that will be repeated now that he has more responsibilities than he did then. But, if not, maybe another of his team will help out.

So hello Lulu but no Velardo.

4 spots left on our list.

1. One good draft pick (pick 4).

2. One pick 58.

3. One Emma Juneja.

4. Finally, the option of pre-listing another Academy player if we want. Otherwise we have a pick 76. Or we could pick a DFA.

That's assuming we don't split pick 4. If we want to split pick 4, options could be:

  • Geelong have picks 9 & 16. I don't think Geelong would do that - I wouldn't if I were them.
  • Richmond have picks 10 & 18 - that seems more realistic
  • West Coast have picks 6 & 24
  • Bulldogs have picks 7 & 25

Personally I would do any of those deals if we miss out on O'Hehir - but I guess it depends on how we (and other clubs) rate those players around our first pick (Rasheed, Painter, McDonald, Howley, Riggs etc).

Time to go shopping in Ireland.

Current base player payments for the new recruits etc.

Sixteen players per side sit in the tier four payment band – the base pay into which most draftees will fall – and the salary for that group will rise from $56,077 to $67,337 in 2025, $70,030 in 2026 and $72,373 at the end of the CBA in 2027.
First year players also get a relocation payment of $16500 that can go towards household goods or rent etc

Is there live pick trading during the AFLW draft? Or at least the capacity to swap picks between now and the draft? Future pick trading?
  • DFA Period: 12th-14th
  • Yes there is live pick trading during draft night

So that article says we’ve nominated three academy players but makes no mention of our right to prelist two. Did the AFLW rescind that right? I’ll be miffed if they did given how Port made out like bandits last year.

I think Hawthorn also had one spot that they didn’t use.

As far as I'm aware no changes in that regard.

Thanks for the clarification - given we now have only one serious pick left int he draft - I will assuredly need that reassurance (regardless of where it comes from).

Quality is much better than quantity they stand out like nothing before still. I'd take 4 to the draft, would not even consider trading back at all.

According to Foxsports the Swans have had a "massive win" getting Imogen Brown back from the Tigers.
Considering she's yet to play a game in AFLW best 22 that's an interesting take.

It appears that not only are there no future picks but also no live pick trading at the AFLW draft. I think that means there's no chance of us splitting our first pick. Which in turn means we're going to get a great player. If O'Hehir is gone, Fish could be available. Whoever we get should be a ripper.

Good. This isn’t the men’s where there’s a thought on splitting. Top 5 picks you take them you need quality
