I didn't know much about Gerreyn, but looks more like a Wells pick than Shanahan. Even though he is somewhat similar to a Neale type, but probably closer to what Vardy was... I think he'll be available for our first pick.

Gerreyn looks physically ready to potentially gap fill games next season tbh.

Would a F2 get us in around 35-37? I think possible. If Shanahan and Dodson are gone, most likely, then they probably take Jacques there, and at 42 maybe Gerreyn. Then they probably take Ivisic later, with probably Bice last selection. Wouldn't rule out Stumpf late either.

Given the trades that have gone down i don't even think our future 1st would do it

If we’d traded our FF for Shanahan at around pick 20-24 no one would have batted an eyelid. But now he’s slipped to being at 28, you have doubts as to whether it’s a value move.

The problem we have is that there are still a swathe of picks before we get a crack and it’s very possible that the likes of Shanahan (certainly), Gerreyn, Boxshall and Clarke are all taken before our first.

So do you offer your FF to secure at least one player (Shanahan) you can walk away with at the end of the draft that is of high quality or do you roll the dice and hope that one or two fall to 42 and 50?

The notion that the 30th best player in this draft is pound for pound equal to or better than pick 12-14 in another is ridiculous.

Just keep our pick and enjoy Bailey Smiths next decade. Leave the embarrassing stuff to the Norfs of the world.

Ps If we had done the deal that Norf did it would have made sense as moving from 12-14 to 20 next year was a Zac Touhy type of trade. For Norf it’s just a ridiculous gamble from a desperate punter

After academy picks it could end up more like pick 25. Doesn’t appear unreasonable when put like that. Plus Shanahan importantly fills a need.

Doubt we entertain it though.

No offence but if history has taught us anything the reason players slide is that they are no good. Recruiters know more than media mockers

The list of guys “projected to go in the teens” that slid right out translating to successful AFL players would be small

Off the top of my head people were begging for day 2 sliders like Dev Robertson, Matt Johnson, Trent Bianco, Will Gould, Josh Worrell, our very own Charlie Constable

Similar thoughts have crossed my mind.

Are Academy players not players??

You’d like me to believe that the quality of this draft is in fact double of every previous draft. I’d say that’s statistically impossible. Yep you might strike gold but what’s far more likely is that this super draft at a maximum produces 15% more players.

The flexibility of holding our 1st round pick and the currency of what we can turn that into seems far better than taking a flyer at a player passed over not once but multiple times by the same clubs. Some of them good clubs like Sydney with the same needs as us.

I’d consider a pick slide but that’s off the table now Rich have lost the F2

I’m not saying that at all. I’m saying that next years draft is even more heavily compromised with academy selections than this years is. A ridiculous number of highly rated kids are aligned to clubs already. So the impact of trading a FF even at this late stage isn’t as great as it may normally be (assuming we don’t plummet down the ladder).

I don't think they need a ruck plus they will get offered future 1sts for 28.
Also if they want davidson they are better to trade 28 out then trade in a 40s pick for davidson instead of using 28 on him.
We don't have much depth behind Nank, just Ryan and throw in Balta at worst case. Rucks are an interesting one yes you get the odd one like Gawn who gets drafted and turns out to be a gun at that club but majority of them get drafted take a while to develop and get picked off by other clubs down the track. I think we got enough out of the draft last night for next year we would be better off trading this first pick tonight.

You wonder if Essendon got bluffed by other clubs to trade out there first.
They could of got Lindsay and Kako.
The old Israeli mobilisation of the reserves conundrum. If you mobilise them then you deter the invasion from neighbouring countries but then it looks like you didn't need to mobilise to begin with and everyone thinks you look silly.

With the dons trading out there was no point bidding earlier. If they didn't then maybe the bid comes in.

Surely they could of traded out on the night though, wait and see.

There was some criticism on the radio this morning about how each pick carried on after having their name called out with hugs and high-fives like they'd won the lottery. Many said it was OK for the top 10 to do it, but after that, the players should have just come up to the stage and done all the celebrations afterward. It dragged the night out, and considering how many of these guys will never really make it as an AFL player, somewhat premature.

I didn't mind it myself. I see this as the equivalent of getting your VCE. It's a great feeling to know all your hard work has paid off to that point in time and worth celebrating in that moment, but it's just a step into the future.

Trade in to get _______... I hope ________ is available at our pick... Let's use our F1 to get into the draft early for _____.

What's the point, most draft threads of years gone by shows how collectively misinformed this board is on players.
Highlights packages make all draft hopefuls look good.

Let's just keep the picks we have and select the best player we can where we're at.

Strong argument that it’s the best course to take.
