Sounds like * upped their offer and hawthorn didn’t budge.

Would prefer he goes to Sydney but hard imagining him moving interstate.

Really don’t want to be flooded by all the “Dodo’s master stroke leads to big coup” headlines.

Three clubs up ante on Ben McKay; Why Tiger great is hanging hopes on a GWS flag; Daicos steps up comeback bid

Updated September 13, 2023

In today’s AFL briefing, your daily wrap of footy news:

  • Kangaroo Ben McKay has a medical at three AFL clubs
  • Tigers great Trent Cotchin cannot bear to have a rival Melbourne club prevail this month.
  • Collingwood star Nick Daicos has hit the training track solo as he ramps up his bid to return from injury with a bang in the preliminary final.

Three clubs make verbal offers to sought after Kangaroo Ben McKay

North Melbourne free agent Ben McKay had a medical at Essendon on Wednesday, his third medical at an AFL club, as he approaches a decision on his next move.
McKay has done a medical at Essendon, Sydney and Hawthorn and received at least verbal offers from all three clubs.

A source familiar with the negotiations but who requested anonymity because of the sensitivity of negotiations said the Kangaroo would make a decision on his next move before the grand final.

Essendon have been considered the front-runners for his services, where he would reunite with his former coach Brad Scott. The Bombers and Hawks have more room in the salary cap, but the Swans’ offer would be likely to be higher than the two Victorian clubs in a bid to tempt him interstate and out of acceptance of the higher cost of living in Sydney.
While Essendon could secure McKay as a free agent to bolster their defence, it would only offset the loss of talented defender Brandon Zerk-Thatcher, who has asked for a trade to Port Adelaide.
Zerk-Thatcher’s decision to seek the trade is a significant blow for the rebuilding Bombers as the 195-centimetre defender had formed a reliable part of their back line this year, playing 22 games to bring his tally since he was drafted in 2017 to 51.

He joins Geelong key-position player Esava Ratugolea and out-of-contract Western Bulldogs ruckman Jordon Sweet in seeking a trade to Alberton.
Port Adelaide had met Grundy about a move home to South Australia but had already declared they were out of the race for Grundy.

Money Talks: Swans’ offer may net Kangaroos top two in draft

Sweet, 25, who was taken in the rookie draft in 2019, played 11 games for the Dogs and was offered a new contract to remain at Whitten Oval but on Wednesday the Dogs announced that he wanted a return home to South Australia.
Having traded heavily for Jason Horne-Francis last year, Port does not have a first-round pick this year nor their own second-round pick, but they do have Collingwood’s second-round selection.

Securing all three players – Zerk-Thatcher, Sweet and Ratugolea – will most likely require them to trade a future pick.
The Swans appear to be the most likely destination for Grundy if, as expected, the Demons ruck asks for a trade after the unsuccessful move from Collingwood this season. Naturally, that situation could change should Grundy return to the Demons team and form part of a successful finals campaign.
Sydney would look to take on Grundy’s Melbourne contract, without a Demons contribution, giving Melbourne significant salary cap relief. The trade terms thus, without Melbourne having to pay a portion of Grundy’s wage, would be expected to be modest.
source familiar with the negotiations but who requested anonymity because of the sensitivity of negotiations said the Kangaroo would make a decision on his next move before the grand final.
If anything is announced before we hear whatever meagre rations the AFL deem to be appropriate by way of assistance, I’ll riot.

Essendon are desperate for some key talls.
If BZT leaves and mckay doesn't come to the club they'll have nobody.

TRADE TROUBLE

CLUBS are expecting plenty of trade stand-offs this year as the value of picks after the top 30 decreases in the eyes of list managers and recruiters.

With a shallow draft pool expected – clubs are predicting less than 60 picks are used at the national draft – there is set to be a flow-on for a number of deals that otherwise may be worth second- and third-round selections.

Clubs opting to use three or fewer draft picks may simply not see a value in later draft picks being exchanged for wantaway players, with impasses expected to be common in the trade period due to clubs simply not wanting to use picks past a certain range.

It will likely leave clubs pushing to instead trade for future selections, but the reverse effect of the draft class is that clubs keen to trade in players this year will be largely wanting to use 2023 selections to get deals done. – Callum Twomey

Honestly, why would you leave from North and go to Essendon or Hawthorn? You wouldn't be holding out on any short-term success at either of those clubs any time soon, is he playing the long game? I just find it odd.
Man he doesn’t want to leave, is rather hopeful we will match his best offer.
This rot about him seeking success elsewhere isn’t true. He thinks he’s worth as much as his brother.
Good on him I say

Essendon a chance to snare free agent Jade Gresham

Essendon are a chance to snare St Kilda free agent Jade Gresham as the forward/midfielder weighs up his future.

One well-placed industry and one Essendon source, who wished to remain anonymous in order to discuss contract matters, said the Bombers were in the hunt for Gresham, one of the more talented free agents still unsigned.

Essendon could be in line to land two of the AFL’s restricted free agents if Gresham opts to leave St Kilda and nominates the Bombers, with the club also keen on securing North Melbourne key defender Ben McKay.

Carlton, who had been linked to Gresham during this season, are not bidding for the talented Saint, with a club source saying the Blues had baulked at the asking price. Gresham, as one of St Kilda’s more gifted players, was well-remunerated by the Saints in his last contract.

Since Gresham is a free agent, the Saints have the right to match any offer from a rival club, such as Essendon, and to attempt to force a trade. In practice, this only happens when the club losing the player feels it can gain better compensation than what would be an offer from the AFL’s compensation pick formula.

The Saints are the favoured destination for Fremantle’s forward Liam Henry, who has told the Dockers he wants to play for St Kilda, with Hawthorn also having made a bid for Henry. Compensation for Gresham would give the Saints more currency to do a deal for Henry.

Gresham, 26, is a classy mover who would add some polish to an Essendon side that is keen to bring in some mature players, although it is unclear what the Bombers are willing to give up. North Melbourne are hoping to gain pick No.3 in the national draft for McKay, which would happen if Essendon, Sydney or even Hawthorn – the clubs who have pursued McKay – paid him a large enough contract.

Clubs say that it requires a contract averaging more than $800,000 a season for the club in North Melbourne’s position to be given a first round pick.

Gresham played 23 of St Kilda’s 24 games this season, booting 21 goals and averaging 17.6 disposals. He has averaged exactly one goal per game over his 136 career games after being selected at pick 18 in the 2015 national draft.

Gresham had three consecutive seasons marred by injury prior to 2023, having been hampered by knee surgery (posterior cruciate ligament) in 2022 when he finished seventh in St Kilda’s best and fairest. He had previously overcome a ruptured achilles and back problems.

Essendon have significant salary cap room and are well-placed to offer free agents strong deals to lure them to Tullamarine. Gresham is originally from the northern suburbs, hailing from South Morang in Melbourne’s north-east.

Speaking on Channel Seven on Monday night, Gresham said he’d had “some really good discussions” with St Kilda coach Ross Lyon, adding “they’re [the Saints] really keen for me to stay”.

“No doubt there’s interest out there [elsewhere], so I’ve just got to weigh it all up. I’ve really enjoyed playing here [for St Kilda] this year ... and we’ll work it all out in the next few weeks.”

Essendon is reportedly also considering North’s veteran ruckman Todd Goldstein, who, like McKay, has a relationship with coach Brad Scott from their time together at Arden Street.

Goldstein is also a free agent, but unrestricted.

Brady has said that unless they get a compensation pick in round 1 of the draft then they will most likely keep Ben.
If Ben doesn't want to leave Victoria and decides its either the Bummers ar Dawks who he picks who only offer $750K over say 5 years it would appear that the club will have to match that bid which l think Ben will be happy with...If Brady is true to his word...

Neither the Hawks or the Bombers will lose another target (or draft collateral) for 250k. They can also be sneaky and do what the Lions did with Daniher, a 3 yr deal on 800k plus and then Ben magically signs an extension in 2024.

IMO it would almost be impossible that he doesn't reach band 1, the market shift has dictated it.
