Did anyone here watch the AFL academy game?
I watched the first half and was very disappointed with Moir. Think I saw him have 1 kick. Looked lost out there. Didn’t seem to have any speed either.
Was he better in the second half?

Based on what I saw, there would be quite a few ahead of him.
Moir had 1 kick 5 handballs
Caddy 1 kick 2 handballs

LOL

Pies win again...Would have been in discussions for pick 1 if he'd nominated in 2022

Excellent list management strategy.

Tell a gun player not to nominate for the draft. Play another sport for a year, sit it out, and we'll get you direct to us (your club of choice) the following year. No need to risk playing for Gold Coast or North

Makes a mockery of the draft and the Cat B system. This kid is tied to Collingwood less than six months after he would have gone high in the draft. Also gets a nice free education in America to make it a lot less risky, AND gets paid by Collingwood (?? Outside salary cap??) throughout!

All up, a pretty sweet start to an AFL career. Especially for a ruck who wouldn’t expect to get many games early on.

EDIT - and the AFL don’t care because getting talent in is way more important to them than fairness.

He puts in those ones occasionally , nature of his role at half forward partly

First time I watched him he was like that

Second time he took WA to the sword in Perth

Who did you like DJ ? I’m waiting for stream to become available but going off what I saw last year I like Tholstrum from WA and Mckercher TAS

Mckercher reminds me of Dylan Shiel

I still haven’t seen Mcauliffe play

There aren’t many stand out midfield talents unfort

I’m a bit of a fan of the SA kid Patton , especially if we don’t get Redman but even if we do ( hope he gets thru to 2nd round but not sure he does )

It does make a mockery of it, but it's on the AFL to not allow this sort of loophole. Collingwood found the loophole and are exploiting it. Wish we could find similar loopholes

We already did with Borlase...he should have been a port player if we are being honest - dad a triple premiership captain but because James was born in Egypt and was in the Sturt zone, he ends up a cat b rookie for us.

Now he might never hit the heights (good SANFL player and seems to be not that far away from a crack at the main team by all reports), but we have benefited

Doubt he's getting paid, I think that would ruin his NCAA eligibility?

Also, he has to spend at least 3 years not playing any footy before he's Cat B eligible. Not 1 year.

The article specifically says he can get paid outside salary cap before he starts playing at the top level (which stinks, but makes sense when you look at the Cat B system as a means of poaching talent from other sports)

My reading is that once drafted they don't count on salary cap until they start playing, not that you can pay players not on your list.
NCAA athletes cannot be paid other than expenses or they lose eligibility.

I Don’t get it
He won’t be eligible for cat-B for over 12months but has committed to a club?

What are collingwood giving/paying him for that commitment, and given he isn’t eligible in anyway at this point to self nominate a club how does whatever they are giving him for that commitment not constitute draft tampering (given if he decided to play footy in the next 12months that’s his only avenue…)

I certainly hope he isn’t allowed to have any direct involvement with the club before he is otherwise cat-b eligible

Melbourne also has Fremantle's second-round pick, meaning the Demons currently have three picks inside the first 26 selections. The other second-round picks in rival hands are the Giants' selection (with Gold Coast), Geelong (with Brisbane), Collingwood (with Port Adelaide), Port Adelaide (with West Coast), Western Bulldogs (with Hawthorn), Brisbane (with Western Bulldogs), Hawthorn (with Sydney), Carlton (with Collingwood), Gold Coast (with Adelaide) and Adelaide (with Gold Coast).

Both of North Melbourne's second-round picks are also with other clubs, with their compensation pick with the Dockers and Adelaide having the Roos' standard second-rounder.

Trading of future picks has undoubtedly increased player movement and enabled more deals to be sealed, with 37 future picks swapped in the first four rounds for this year's draft, exactly half of the 74 picks in that bracket. – Callum Twomey

The Draft & Trading board has that 2023 draft table but I think it has an error

It has us having the GWS 2nd round pick and not the Gold Coast pick

When we did the trade, Gold Coast had their own and GWS 2nd round pick but I haven’t seen anything to say the pick they traded to us was tied to GWS and not Gold Coasts own pick.
