On Will Setterfield

“Will is out of contract. He’s a required player and we’d like to retain him, but he’s free to explore his options.”

“In a perfect world we’d love to retain Will. We've been pretty clear on that”.

Would be odd to not put an offer to a player that is required and we would like to retain.

View attachment 1529824

The first part of that sentence and the second part of that sentence are at polar opposites of each other. If he was a "required player" he wouldn't be free to " explore his options". He certainly wouldn't be made to sit through trade week without a contract if he was a "required player". Just word salad from the club.

If we incur a midfield injury, Voss will work towards moving the following players onball
1. Docherty
2. Zac williams
3. Jsos
4. Fisher.

He will then promote the extra backmen into the 22: newman, marchbank, boyd etc

This is without allowing for development of Carrol or drafting a mid or taking rhys mathisen post season.

I just do not think the club wants to offer setters a multi year deal and whether it is this year or next we will move passed him.

Not an on baller in any way.

He's uncontracted. You can't restrict an uncontracted player from exploring their options.
You also can't force a player to sign a contract. It's not The Godfather.

Yep, looked at the squad & thought the same. Plus DC can float through, Philp was drafted as a mid (both have a point of difference with pace) & Martin was being groomed in the midfield 1 pre-season. Then there’s also Ed + Fog.

+ Plow down back, if needed.

Based on his previous 7 seasons at the club, the only thing he'll be floating through is the rehab room.

I didn't say it was The Godfather and didn't say we could force him to do anything. He's clearly not a required player as stated. Its clear as day that's the case.

I think Setters and Dow are far from a combined $750k.

And with your second point, I think that's where the challenge with shopping around depth lies. Realistically we want to keep just one of Dow/Setters but we don't care who (as long as we get the best trade for the other). While it's unknown which player that may be, we're left to awkwardly put them both up for a trade but also let them know they're valued players, as likely at least one of them will still be at the club next year.

Realistically, we don't want either player. The problem is, one of them has a contract. If they can both be moved, it's certain they will be.

Club spiel. All clubs do it.

”Will Setterfield is out of contract. We want to trade him.” That sentence is just asking for shit offers.

Setters in no loss. We tried to swing him onto a wing, forward, back and nothing stuck. Even his inside mid numbers aren’t particularly compelling. Acres makes him surplus to needs and he can fill the others roles Setters can’t play.

Thanks for your service, Setters and best wishes.

Acres being called the steal of the draft period…

Ah okay Knobel, Trent's son. Think he will be gone by 49, so will the kid I think has greater upside as a ruckman in Scully, but is a long term prospect like Todd Marshall

Petric is a kid that has real upside as a tall, should be there at 48, along with Northam and Tregenza

I like a few kids this year under 180cm Hagan, Drury, Long, but they might all be gone by pick 49

Where do you think Knobel and Lemmy get drafted?

Anyone who willingly wants to go to Essendon must be outside their mind. Gross.

Should dick Dedoro around right up until the last second of trade period just for the lols

* dedoro and * essendon
he is a master at messing around...so i think we should try our best to get a reasonable trade done as soon as possible (assuming thats what setters wants).

Oh for sure...and I'm not over thinking Setters value either. Good ordinary footballer...maybe scope for more. At 24 he needs opportunity.

I'm a bit...let's say alert not alarmed, with where we are at though. Jettisoned/jettisoning a fair whack of once highly rated youth, and exposing the next layer. We're banking on a reasonable amount of internal development, which to be fair, we've just never seen.

Plus we've lost a bit of ground to the Cats/Lions/Tigers and possibly Dees...at least on paper.

Reassure me dammit
...

I feel like that sometimes..
At that point, I always try and defer to 'the club/coach/list management team are in a better position to make these decisions than I am'.. and rhen I smile contently.

Then I see images of Mick Martyn, Billy Smedts, Kristian Jaksch, Darcy Lang and Alex Fasolo and I start to worry again 😵‍💫🤣

Where do you think Knobel and Lemmy get drafted?

Where they get drafted is different to longterm rankings

Knobel could be the best longterm ruck in this draft after Scully, so clubs should look to take him no later than early 3rd round

Lemmey is a 1st round talent, but he will slide due to other aspects, suspect only one of the SA clubs take him late

I think we genuinely want to keep him. But I think he probably wants a year more than we want to give...probably wants more money than we can give...probably wants more opportunity than we can offer.

Need another quality mid ..with Kennedy and Hewett Injury prone .can't put all the work to just two.....Cripps and Walsh, who as a result of not having enough support find themselves having to take on a bigger workload causing them to susceptible to Injuries themselves .. setterfield replacement tick ( acres ) ...dow replacement ..??? Let's see

Sent from my moto e(7) using Tapatalk
Need another quality mid? Umm... just keep Dow and give him a good long run in the side like with did with LOB. If at the end of next year he hasn't come on, no loss. But I highly suspect that we'll keep him if we can't trade him.

"We're looking at trading Garlett and Robinson, if we don't get anything for them, we're going to delist them!".

247 games at Carlton and Brisbane... not bad for a pick 40 all the way back in 2008.
