Mutineer won’t love me saying this but I wonder if South Adelaide kids get marked down for being ‘different personalities ‘

Eg JHF Krueger Draper Verrall Delean

Krueger and Draper known especially for being a bit out there and different as personalities

Verall maybe the same

Something in the water down at Bice Oval
Interesting theory...

IF we had of traded our F1 for Rankine ...and retained pick #5 ...still wouldn't have got Phillipou, as it appears ESS will use pick #4

We're playing the game correctly, interviewing, showing strong interest .....if Phillipou decides to come home, this should play in our favour
I was going to post something similar to this, but no need now... well said :) Having said that, I suspect if Phillipou does want to return home, he will choose Port. :(

I actually think the number of interviews speaks to the concerns

If you have a high end local talent, you’re going to want to speak to him a lot to confirm any concerns that might have arisen

And if you want the entire club to get on board with concerns, you’re going to have more meetings for key decision makers to see for themselves

So if a first interview flags up issues, not everyone is going to take that as given. They’re going to want to see for themselves and bottom it out

It’s pretty clear there are wildly differing views on this player, which means that one side will eventually be kicking themselves.

Whether it’s the team who takes him or the teams who pass remains to be seen

I recall an interview on SEN a couple of weeks back where Rendell was talking about how some players you can’t get a read on. At Collingwood they interviewed a certain player multiple times but couldn’t figure him out, numerous other clubs felt the same way - that player was James Sicily.

I think we like to stay close to potential targets. I am aware of another local product that we are having our 5th interview with this week - second time Nicks meeting with him

Haven’t heard any whispers of concerns around this player either

It is a pity that there has been conflict between Tafkatms and Volbeat. I respect their thoughts and appreciate their posts. I see that Tafkatms is posting again. I truely hope that Volbeat does too. These two have had some awesome insights into our club and I hope that it continues. :)

So what exactly is a "red flag"?
Do the neighbourhood pets go missing or something? Head spins around? Takes instructions from neighbours dog?
I think in Phillipou's case, he presents as if he's very proud of what he's been able to achieve and where he sees himself amongst his peers.

Sometimes, folks like this don't survive a more intense environment, with senior players and staff who don't want the bullshit.

He could end up as Nathan Buckley, but he also could fold emotionally in a professional football environment. Or it could just be a 17 year old kid who hasn't learned how to present in interviews yet.

Clubs are trying to work out what their take on him is.

But the Herald Sun on Tuesday reported Collingwood, which holds a first-round selection sandwiched between two Giants picks, had also been linked to Clarke.

Foxfooty.com.au understands the Western Bulldogs would also consider selecting Clarke should he slip through to their early second-round selection. Clarke had also indicated North Melbourne had also shown interest in him.

Clarke told Sportsday earlier this month he liked to watch and learn from Papley, Toby Greene and Charlie Cameron.

“I love to celebrate. I don’t really have a go-to, I make it up on the spot, I’m all-in,” Clarke told SEN.

Two points :
1. COLL simply putting pressure on GWS to use an earlier pick on Clarke .....they probably have no interest

2. FFS lad ....get drafted first, don't talk about your celebrational dances, B4 you've even been Drafted

I might have a roundabout way of thinking about these things, but I don't see a problem with this? Especially if it's in the context of a specific question asked by a journalist

Speaking to reporters, Hewett said he’d “recently” spoken to new St Kilda coach Ross Lyon ahead of the draft.

“The prospect of playing under Ross is there but there’s a lot of other clubs that are around that mark as well,” he said.

Despite the uncertainty around his AFL future, Hewett said he was “confident that I’ll be in the first round”.

“It’s a matter of the pick right now, I just don’t exactly know where,” he said.

“I’m thinking around the eight to 12 mark, within there. You just don’t exactly know and I could go a bit behind there.”

Speaking on SEN Sportsday, Cornes asked Twomey – who has followed Phillipou’s journey – whether the Woodville West Torrens youngster needed to “pull his head in a little bit”.

While Twomey describes Phillipou as one of the more confident players he has encountered, he doesn’t feel his ultra-confidence is considered a negative by clubs.

“He would be right up there for the most confident players I’ve interviewed,” Twomey replied.

“There’s been a few over the last 10 years in covering the draft, he’d be right up there.

“That’s not a front, that’s his natural confidence and self-belief in himself to be really, really good.

“To a fair degree, I think clubs like the fact he’s backing himself into being a star.

Thank god

Love to see more draftee self-belief rather than just 'towing the line'

As usual TAFKATMS bang on the money, Twomey the one person that would be talking to the recruiters and it seems the supposed red flags in clubland are way off the mark...just some Media and draft watchers talk going off a couple of interviews.

Jakob Ryan ? Would be a pretty decent replacement for Brodie Snith long term

Similar height , run and carry and a bit more aerial presence

Bangers Says - Tony Bamford's assessment of Will Verrall

”We didn’t know what was going to happen with Will because he had a really interrupted preseason with some injuries to his groins and hips which he carried through the back end of his U17 year.
”We thought he had gotten over that but as he started to come back into South Adelaide’s preseason in February last year, some signs of aggravation reared again so he had to stop training altogether and restart his rehab.
”That really hindered his ability to get on the track and get his match fitness. ”Had Will Verrall been fit and firing, on all four cylinders, like he was as a 17-year-old, we would have played both rucks at the Nationals.
”Because at his best, Will Verrall is as good as (Harry) Barnett. So (AFL) clubs are doing some work on Will Verrall now based on what he did as a 17-year-old, knowing it was at a really high level.”

Bangers Says - Tony Bamford's assessment of Jakob Ryan

”Jakob’s athletically sound and works really hard both ways, offensively and defensively.
”He’s predominantly a high defender and is really good at anticipating the offence from the opposition.
”He knows when to leave his opponent to go to the ball or to slide back and create an extra number.
”He knows when to peel off to start offence and get a handball receive. Like Max (Michlanney) he sees the game really well.
”He was probably unlucky not to be an (U18) All-Australian, he had a really good champs for us playing as a high defender.
”I think he could play on a wing in the AFL as well. Some of the clubs who have spoken about Jakob to me have said they think he can transfer into a high-marking forward as well. So that’s exciting for Jakob.”
