"The clash between the Swans and Collingwood is the hottest ticket in the Harbour City – leading us to wonder if Sydney is finally seeing the light on footy – with the prelim a 48,000-seat sellout while tickets were still available on Thursday afternoon for the Souths versus Sharks rugby league clash to be played right next door and at the same time"

Do they think the Swans outdrawing the NRL is a new thing?

Without looking at the stats, I'd imagine most Swans home games would draw a larger crowd than all NRL games in Sydney over that weekend.

Well, acknowledging it is.

Without looking at the stats, I'd imagine most Swans home games would draw a larger crowd than all NRL games in Sydney over that weekend.

Yes, that's quite common, but again, not acknowledged.

As it is Preliminary final weekend here the top 5 Preliminary finals crowds of all time

1) St Kilda V Carlton 108,215 MCG 1970

2) Collingwood V Richmond 107,279 MCG 1969

3) Essendon V Geelong 103,649 MCG 1968

4) St Kilda V Richmond 102,494 MCG 1971

5) Geelong V Carlton 99,203 MCG 1962

Tickets for the Souths v Sharks game are completely sold out, not sure where they are getting this information from. Likewise Parramatta v Canberra at CommBank is also sold out.

If 2 of the bigger Sydney clubs are playing at Accor stadium in a preliminary final they are capable of drawing some pretty big crowds:

2009 Bulldogs v Eels 74,549
2010 Dragons v Tigers 71,212
2012 Bulldogs v Rabbitohs 70,354

Not saying the Swans aren't popular and it is impressive how quickly they sold out the SCG, but I think it's a bit much to imply the AFL has overtaken the NRL in popularity in Sydney. The average Sydneysider wouldn't be able to name a current Swans player that's not Buddy.

There was the 2007 prelim between Geelong and Collingwood that drew 98,002 which was higher than the grand final. Were the MCC rules different back then that allowed the ground to be closer to it's capacity?

For some reason I have in my mind a prelim between those two sides that drew over 100k. And I think I was there too, but it was a mediocre game with an easy Geelong win.

Imagine the line for the mens room....

They're just saying the Swans are popular in Sydney
The average Sydneysider wouldn't be able to name a current Swans player that's not Buddy.

Nor would the average Sydneysider be able to name many r.l. players.

False memory, I'm afraid.

We've played 5 prelims against the Cats since 1980 - 3 of them were thrillers decided by 7 points or less. (1980, 1981, 2007) The other two were thrashings one year after the other with the victors swapped.

The Cats thumped us in 2009 with a crowd of 87k and we returned the favour the next year in front of 95k.

So?More reason for the RL to sellout!

My best mate runs a business up in Sydney and was telling me today that a couple of years ago he bought 8 NRL GF tickets a month or two out from the game. Anyway he was going to raffle them off, but that idea fell through, so he put them up online to sell at market rate. No bites at all, so he dropped it 20 percent under market price, still nothing, 30 percent another week later etc, etc ... nothing. Then finally a week before the game he got a couple of calls from people offering him $30 for the $100 tickets. In the end he just gave them to some customers for free. Literally felt like he couldn't beg anybody to buy them 😅.

NRL support in Sydney and even Brisbane is so casual, they really dont care. The fact you can buy $60 tickets to the Grand Final months in advance says it all.

Funny that. I heard on a Sydney based radio show that the NRL had their GF ticket pricing just right and that the AFL overprice their GF tickets 🤣

In business you generally get the price for your product that the public is willing to pay and the AFL as the premium football code with by far the most fans/supporters/members in the nation should always get better prices than the second placed NRL!

The AFL could easily sellout a 150,000 stadium for the GF if one was available in Melbourne!
