Review 2019 AFL National Draft

Im not sure why the draft wasnt at the start of November.
All the young players at each club have started pre season already.
Surely the first year players should be out there with them.
I think it has something to do with year 12 exams. Waiting for that to finish

Stuff year 12 exams, this more important. Bring the draft forward!!!!!!!!

Still surprised we haven’t put Matt McGuinness as a Cat B rookie yet. Have 2 spots free there, should fill them with the other going to another nga prospect or international rookie again (keep churning through them until we find a hidden gem for free)

It’s perplexing. He looks a solid prospect and is tall enough to play as a key defender which we desperately need depth for. We’d be stupid not to do it

Remembering that players can't train with clubs until after the draft.

The club might simply want a closer look at him for a few weeks knowing he's unlikely to get picked up in the main draft anyway before making the financial commitment (Not just the wage, but lodging, host families, development resources etc).

I'm sure they have overheads down to a $ figure per 1st year recruits and rookies and add it onto any salary estimates.

If we trade 26&50>22 we retain 2 picks in the 20s whilst Freo get extra points for Henry.

This trade would be fantastic to get done.

At West Coast, Brady traded a first rounder for 2 seconds

Hes done the same at North now.

Question, can anyone remember if live trading was available that year? From memory it was because the Eagles wanted both Ryan & Kelly.

Maybe there’s two players he’s keen on?

He exchanged a first for a first next year plus a 2nd and third this

Similar to what has been suggested on here that we should look at potentially with either Jacobs or X. Giving 4 spots and then pick them up again as a rookie

Strange as it may sound I'd be more cautious with this approach with Xerri, as he might be the type to be pinched on the cheap by a team short on a back up ruck/2nd key forward after a bit of improvement in the VFL this year. At least if we went this path with Jacobs he could price himself out of consideration.

Could Gould be a golden pick for Kangaroos?

He might be sick of being compared to rugged West Coast defender Shannon Hurn, but the young draft hopeful has very similar traits. Could he be a perfect replacement for Scott Thompson at North Melbourne?

Will Gould is getting a little sick of the comparisons to West Coast defender Shannon Hurn.

“I just keep saying he’s a 200-game premiership captain and I haven’t played a game yet,” the AFL draft hopeful said.

“It’s incredibly humbling and a massive honour to be compared to Shannon, but I’ve got a bit of work to do to be as good as him.”

Gould hails from a cattle and sheep farm in the South Australian town of Lucindale, about 350km southeast of Adelaide.

The 2016 census listed the town’s population at just 555 people, but it has already produced AFL talent in the form of Carlton premiership player Andrew McKay and Adelaide young-gun Darcy Fogarty.

Now Gould is set to join the list as a likely first-round draft pick with a body ready to step straight up to AFL level.

The 18-year-old has already matched it against men this year, playing 15 games of senior football for Glenelg in the SANFL including in the club’s premiership.

DOB: 14/1/2001
H: 191cm
W: 98kg
Position: Key Defender
Plays like: Shannon Hurn
U18 National Championships averages: 21.5 disposals, 7.3 rebound 50s, 6.5 contested, 4.5 marks, 2.0 intercept marks, 6.3 intercept possessions, 1.3 score involve, 1.3 spoils, 2.5 tackles, 99 SuperCoach points

He also shone brightly for his state in the under-18 national championships, averaging the most rebound 50s of any defender in the tournament at 7.3 a game via a booming right foot.

“A few of us SA boys have been able to play some league and some footy against men so I think that sets us up well to go into an AFL system and be ready to succeed,” Gould said.

“I love kicking long, breaking lines, playing exciting footy. I love watching exciting footy so that’s the way I like to play as well.”

Gould finished school last year but has gone back to coach the Year 9B football team at Prince Alfred College in Adelaide, while also working at a sports retail shop and completing a sports management course.

He does keep an eye on Hurn, but the Geelong supporter spends more time watching how two other AFL defenders go about their craft.

“I watch Dylan Grimes from Richmond, who is a little bit of a different role to Shannon, he’s more a lockdown one-on-one defender,” Gould said.

“And Tommy Stewart from Geelong. I love watching him and how he goes about it.”

Expected to be a late first-round or second round pick, Gould will be considered by North Melbourne (picks 26 and 27) as a replacement for the retired Scott Thompson, while Adelaide (picks 23 and 28) and Port Adelaide (picks 18 and 29) also find themselves in the right range to secure the home-state talent.

Sign me up for Gould. Bloke is a footballer's footballer and put together an excellent year in the SANFL seniors.

People pointing to his fitness base as a weakness but I see it as room for improvement. If he's played this well in the SANFL Seniors (arguably 2nd to the AFL for quality) with an average fitness base what could he be with a few preseasons under his belt?

Can't see us snagging him but really hoping it somehow happens.

Jackson’s not next gen, available to anyone

Ok so needs to be Henry then... interesting that mock had Freo taking both Henry and Taylor and they already have Walters... would have thought they needed to replace their two lost wingers... but then again nick had us needing another 3rd fwd

It’s weird us being mentioned as it says expected to be a late first round then in next breath mentions us who don’t have a pick until mid second

Gould is just about the only one I’d like to trade up for into the low 20’s if we thought Adelaide would take him.

We need another defender and he fits the bill as arguably the best in the draft.

Like most I see his athletic aspects as room for improvement.

He will lose 5+ kg’s this summer alone.
