I don’t know or care about what his real reasons are.

But I cannot be clearer, and am shocked you find it confusing, that there is zero relationship between what is true and what they say publicly

Any correlation is purely coincidental.

If the truth is advantageous they’ll say that, if a lie is advantageous they’ll say that.

What they say publicly is not a reliable indicator of what is true!
I gather and agree with the concept, I’d just be super surprised if there wasn’t some sort of family pull there, considering what’s happened

Arguably had some of the roughest off-field experiences over the past few years

Having a guaranteed 2nd game against Carltons add value to our trade. ;)

Couple that with two Polec-less and Wingard-less Port Adelaide games and we should be 4-0 from those games.

With only about ~9 more victories needed to secure finals. Which 2 of those will come against GCS, and Saints as well.

What a soft draw that would be.

Unfortunately, there's this from the swamps...

I just threw up in my mouth

We would have received pick 9 as RFA or better for Sloane. We could have done big thing in combination with that pick.
Yeh,we could trade Laird, Doedee, Talia, Matt & Brad Crouch too, imagine the picks we could get with those!
Trading good players will always get you something good in return. It's just that you also lose the good player you already had.

You can never be wrong when the best players in the draft are from SA. People don't look at the big picture. Will take a 15 year career with us over 3 years every day of the week. Our track record of losing non south Australians around 22 to 26 is nothing to be proud of. Don't get me wrong Hamish can spot the best talent, not much good when the club struggles to keep it. In fact it could be argued that the talent he picks are so good it increases the likelihood of losing the player. Hamish's job description should include finding the best player that will play a minimum of 150 games for the club. I understand it is the club's responsibility to keep the player but they have proven that they are inadequate in this facet. Therefore more weighting should be placed in local talent by Hamish.
We actually keep about 90% of the vics we draft

Go and sit on the Eagles board.

They have a similar philosophy to you too. They and you are correct in that respect. Having a stable team that is built around locals is going to be better in the long run. Every few years we get a player who has been with us for 4-5 years gets up and leaves and it shits me.

As an example, I would have loved for us to get Shiel. No way would he have come to us unless we offered him a Dusty Martin deal and then some. Why? Because he is a Vic kid and he isnt going to go from Syd to Adl when a club from his home state is calling. Similarly Hogan too, he knows that the Dockers offered him stupid money.

If our Club highly rates Luko, Rankine etc etc I would be upset if we didnt try and do almost everything bar selling the farm to get them.
We have enquired with all trhe clubs with better picks than us, and selling the farm is indeed what we would need to do. Which is why we haven't.
Saints demanded 8, 13 and 16 just for pick 4.

This^

We can cover players with players that can play just as good or even better. Doedee for Lever, in 2017 Mrouch,Brouch and Sloane all took their game to another level when Danger left, I expect us to replace Gov with McAdam/Fog.

The one player we have lost which hurts us in the current state is CC. He was an excitement machine, great offensive and defensive weapons. He would never command the best small defender as that would go to Betts, so this allowed him to run riot.
Tend to agree, think the club have seen this hence the focus on getting small forward types we can develop into a similar role. Plus I think Pyke believes our forward line was too tall.

That number feels wrong, are you using a cutoff period or counting Vics we've drafted and delisted as kept? Equally traded in?

Player retention only concerns me for the elite part of our side, and that I'd feel is a lot closer to 50% keep rate (which is where I'd be expecting every non powerhouse vic team to be operating at)

If we're talking non-spud players, this is what our Victorian retention looks like since 2000

Kept
Brent Reilly
Richard Douglas
David Mackay
Rory Sloane
Daniel Talia
Brad Crouch
Matt Crouch
Rory Atkins
Kyle Hartigan
Tom Doedee
Jordan Gallucci
Andy Otten

Left
Patrick Dangerfield
Jack Gunston
Jake Lever
Jarryd Lyons*
Ivan Maric*
Chris Knights*

*left for more opportunity/weren't getting games

So if we discount Lyons, Maric and Knights on the leaving side, and Doedee and Gallucci on the keeping side (too young to tell), our retention rate is currently 77%.

And before you ask, if you exclude Brent Reilly and David Mackay our retention goes down to 73%

This is purely on the drafting side, we also, of course, have players like Jenkins, Lynch and Seedsman who we traded in and decided to extend their contract.

---

As for non-Vic, non-SA players, this is our retention:

Kept
Nathan Van Berlo

Left
Jonathon Griffin
Kurt Tippett
Charlie Cameron
Mitch McGovern

It's also worth pointing out we've had a few SA players leave, including Bock, Mattner, Vince and Davis. We also delisted Victorian players Henderson and Ed Curnow who went on to join Victorian clubs. Matty Wright was an SA lad who we also delisted and played further games for a Victorian club

Is there a so far asterisks?

slightly off track, but hey everyone is right now..
What do people think of this as a Free Agency condition..
If you take a player in Free Agency it costs you your First Draft Pick that year which goes to the club the player is leaving, that also gets rid of the compensation rubbish.

Is there a so far asterisks?

Played at least 6 years at the Crows, and stayed (so far)
Brent Reilly
Richard Douglas
David Mackay
Rory Sloane
Daniel Talia
Brad Crouch
Matt Crouch*
Rory Atkins
Kyle Hartigan
Andy Otten

Played less than 6 years, and left
Jack Gunston
Jake Lever

Played more than 6 years, and left but not for more opportunity
Patrick Dangerfield

*6th year is 2019
