People try this argument every year regarding last seasons best player and it rarely works as you can back it in 90% of the teams in your leagues will have him and utilize the VC/C on him leaving you buggered and behind the 8 ball from day 1.

Once this happens everyone tries to scamper to make the $$ to bring them in and burn 2 trades in doing so!

Ablett in his prime / Now Danger etc are just always first picked for me and then structure a team around them cause unless injury hits it burns you big time not having them IMO as they rarely drop that much and price moves do not even come into until Rd3 and in that time you could be missing out on massive points especially as Captain etc.

Just my 2c.
I wasn’t really asking about the merits of picking danger or not as such - more that if you do leave him out are you better off with mid-price setup to be able to pick him up when the time is right than you with a g&r setup.

Now that you mention it though I do think there’s a fair chance he averages less than 136 this year. The captain issue is where it becomes a risk. Pick the correct premo each week and you get away with it, pick the wrong ones and it will cost you points.

If you don't start with Danger the heavily laden Mid Price strategy carries even more risk IMO cause if they start churning out regular 60 scores and you have to many of them you are at your wits end trying to get your team right with just them let alone trying to get the best scorer in the comp in as well. If a rookie gets you 60 points they are still making money most early weeks where a Mid Pricer becomes a boat anchor.

It is risk v reward though but I cannot see Danger dropping to much barring injury affected scores if they even come.

Put it this way. 3 of the last 4 years, I've decided to NOT start with the ultra premium. Every single time I lost out. The only reason I won out last year is because Danger got broken ribs. A lot of people are saying that its a risk with Ablett coming into the side but they will complement each other. You will see both being able to rest in the fwd line but the diference this time is that Ablett will be there to fill the void in the midfield this season. Worst case scenario, Danger will drop to 120ppg, or about $630k I think or there abouts.

Seriously, have a think about that! Every season he he hits +180. The blip at 74 was due to his rib injury. Since he moved to geelong, his sub 100 games had reduced dramatically. He is clearly worth every cent.

Oh come on 60s, I’m not sure I’ve ever picked one that went at 60. Hickey at 70-odd early last year I reckon is the worst performing mid Pricer I’ve picked barring injury.

If danger goes at 120 early on I reckon you need your additional mid Pricers to go at 90 to break even points wise and save 100k. I don’t think that’s too outlandish. I reckon 90 is pretty conservative.

MERRYYYYY XMAS ! (for the other day)

Once again, i'll be ignoring the silly season bullshit that "such and such has bulked up and superfit" (yeah great, cheers), and "such and such is training the house down".... and sticking with my tried and tested Travis Cloke Syndrome to pick the mid pricers.

Bonanza last season with my boy Bradley E Bert locked in and held for the entire season, avoiding the predictable Jaegerbomb.
10th(ish) in the Brownlow if you dont mind :). If i recall he was behind only Oliver for mid priced value. But hey...who the fk other than a one eyed deranged Dees fan would have picked Oliver for Rnd 1  Hate to brag ;)

Find a good quality but out of favour mid that is coming off an average/poor season and has a contract up for renewal. Preferably around late 20's and not injury prone. He's in his prime but now starting to shit himself that he's washed up at the end of the season unless he puts a gun up his bum.
Sound simple ?..yeah it works a treat (until it doesnt:p). Potentially their last contract up for renewal at the end of the season....best not to have another blah blah season, right ?

Wont be looking at them till end of Jan, but there's always a few nice candidates.

U may scoff :D, but i'm milking this theory coz it cant be any worse than the 100 others i've tried.

AFL players are just like your missus....dangle a dollar bill on a stick and they'll get out of the blocks like a rocket ship. 100K up for a 100K down fallen super-primo that has good bye rnds, and the Danger investment is paid for and 1 trade spent on another super primo you wanted anyway.

...and before you can bring up Colon Saliva, he was never any good, and tore a heart muscle every second week so he never qualified.

Cant go wrong. Its bewwwdiful :thumbsu:

This is what pre season is all about right here :D

I'm just on Footywire having a look at Harley Bennell's Supercoach history and.....damn.....

If this guy can stay fit then he's a must have at not much more than the price of an expensive rookie. He averaged 101.7 just a couple of years ago. Look at some of the monster scores he got that year (2015): 146, 120, 124, 140, 139. The rest of the time he scored consistently in the 80-90 range.

He's clearly an injury machine though having not played a full season since 2012 and no more than 15 games a year in the next 3 seasons after that.

I'm not overly familiar with him as a player and it's my understanding he's been a bit of a naughty boy when it comes to off-field behavior, so that combined with his history of injuries may not make him the most reliable of players to have in your team for the whole season. With such a high ceiling and being the price he is though, I'm taking the chance on him.

I'd just pick him after a couple to be sure.

Think we'll have a better idea of his durability after the JLT series ......big plus if Bennell's body can hold up ....no reason why not

Surely you jest, bruv?...maybe I missed the not serious emoji...
Bennell is the worst player for preparation in the league hands down, name a current player that has
pics of cocaine abuse.

My current Fwd line consists of Harley nose hose at F4 as a cow with some delicious udders,
I also think he's a lock...at his price...after a injury free preseason, and some form shown in the JLT...

...but do I think he will play again, this I don't know.
I only here whispers from my home town so can't make a call on this
one...

This I do know, he will be a extremely GOOD rookie if..."IF" he recaptures his form.

Got Ah Chee at F4 in mine. Will swap to Harley if he looks the goods in JLT.
