just got back from watching the intra club match.
overall impressions- they played 15 minute quarters with a short 2 or 3 minute break between each, was very hot and humid down there 37 in the direct sunlight and very sticky. the first quarter and a bit were very scrappy as you would expect then the boys got into it. the intensity and talk was very good, lot of yelling "move it on quick", "get it in there" with a few expletives thrown in there, i noticed mitch robinsons voice a lot.
few points of interest.
1. very few contested marks, i counted 4, might have missed a couple, of those schache took 2, andrews took 1 typical intercept mark in defence.
2. schache kicked 3 goals and looked solid, kicked 2 set shot goals that went straight as a dye from around 40.
3. very few running bounces as well, nick robbo a couple and bastinac 1, again might have missed a couple.
4. if i was giving a BOG i would have went for lewy taylor followed by nick robbo- great intensity and run from both and talk.
5. thought allen christensen delivered some nice ball and got a couple of his usual head high shot frees for.
6. matheison pretty quiet, but did a few classy things.
7. i didn't mind the look of jackson paine in defence, looked pretty solid.
8. of the more experienced guys i thought bewick, hanley, walker and rich were pretty quiet, richy a couple of good kicks.
9. josh walker copped a bit of a knock and was limping, i think it was in the second quarter, can't remember seeing him out there again. a few boys got up sore a couple of times though nothing serious in it, just getting used to the physical impact again.
10. marco paparone looked solid as usual.
11. rocky solid, but nothing special.

as you would expect they all looked very spent after the game, but they had a short rest and came out again for a roughly 20 minute kick mark and run session under fatigue although they all kept pushing. all in all i think a pretty good first hit out in difficult conditions.
if you have any questions i will attempt to answer, didn't take notes so just relying on my short term memory abilities.:)

Such as Quigs?
Can't get away with that post that easily?

This has been one of my knocks on our midfield as well.

If you want Robbo I can name some players, but I would prefer to say as a collective it is fair to say that our players run much faster forward than when getting into our backline. We know the best teams run both ways at high intensity. I do believe the recruiting of Bell and Bastinac is as much about defensive run as anything else. Really you just need someone to set the standard. Nick Robbo has the running ability and running intensity to lead this charge with Bell and Bastinac.

Geez, I got sucked in there, I guess that is where we are at as supporters, we are so keen for our club to be on the right track. We are unfairly depending on young footballers like Taylor, Robertson, Cutler, Mayes, Gardiner, Clarke, Andrews, Dawson, McStay, Close, Paparone, Freeman etc to dig us out of the hole we have been in for the last decade. Unfair expectations.

I wonder how hard they went today given it was 35+ degrees out in the sunlight and very humid today. Would have felt like 50 degrees out there today. I enjoy the warmth and even today I was feeling it a bit and I was inside!
they went pretty hard, and it was bloody hot and sticky i was sweating and i was in the shade standing still.
forgot to mention before, jono freeman was very quiet, can only recall him going for a couple of marks and spilling them. also it wasn't 18 on 18, tried to count them a few times i think it was 16 v 16, the forwards v backs setup at center bounces was 4 on 4. i know only an intra club and very early but schache looked a class above jono.

i must have missed one, i thought schache kicked 3-1, bit blacky says he kicked 4. also said pearce hanley was good which i didn't see. i think i will concede to blackys greater football knowledge on that one:)
I thought he kicked 3.1 as well, with the behind hitting the post. I actually thought Pearce was great in the first half (maybe we were watching from different spots) but barely saw him in the second half.

I really think that Hanley is priming himself for a massive season. I get the impression that his recent media comments were his statement of intent to make things happen this year, after last season was substantially lost to his recovery from surgery.

It is sounding like a few players are starting to establish themselves as leading contenders for the up-for-grabs spots in the team. Bastinac and NRobbo would appear to be staking a strong enough claim. It is going to be interesting getting the reports from each intraclub or training session over the next few weeks.

Schache! (I choose to have unrealistic expectations of an 18 year old yet to play an AFL game)

Well done to all those providing reports from what must have been a stinking hot footy field!

Will be interesting to see how Mitch Robinson is played for you guys this year.

Pure onballer finished the year really well but only when hanley and mainly beamer went out of the equation.

How do u fit all of Rocky, Beamer, Rich, Hanley and Robinson into the same starting midfield? Does Hanley n Rich play more wing?

You might be confusing Hanley with someone else; he played the second half of the year when Robinson's form was strongest.

I don't think there's much connection between Beams' injury and Robinson's form. Rockliff was back in the team at year's end so it's not as if Robbo suddenly had fewer teammates to compete with for possessions.

A 'starting midfield' doesn't really means that much these days. There'll be ten or eleven guys who spend a significant chunk of the game on the ball.

I would like to add Green to that list
As much as i like green. I would say he may become somewhat disposable. I know he has been a 2 time leading goal kicker for us but i just cant fit him in our round 1 team. Id have christensen and zorks ahead of him for that small forward role and he will never make the midfield group. Not to mention if taylor improves. Bell and m robbo to play some half forward time aswell. Its a great problem to have however a decent player like green may miss out. I may be 100% wrong however
