True but they are the likely results, especially Sydney. we have underestimated them. They should be flag favs now as they have only lost 3 games and are likely to face home finals. If Swans have a good win on Sunday they are 2 games ahead and maybe a little bit of % also. Sydney should start favorites on the SCG against you guys. Top 2 is unlikely now.

How much does that hurt your flag chances do you reckon?
Sydney still have to play you guys and geelong at geelong so there's 2 games there they may drop. It may come down the hawthorn v sydney for a top 2 spot. It hasn't helped our flag chances obviously, but I don't take it as a massive blow either

What it has cost them is a top 2 position most likely. Adelaide will be hard to toss out for top2 as they should start clear favorites in all their remaining games while the other top 4 contenders are all playing each other mutliple times. Hawks will probably be 2 games behind Sydney after this round and 1 behind Collingwood so their destiny is in the hands of others. Even beating Syd on the SCG and winning all other games doesn't guarantee top 2 now. 1 more loss and top 2 almost certainly gone.

Hawks likey to be travelling in finals now. makes it much tougher. How do Hawks fans feel about this?
Better when I remind myself that Collingwood is no guarantee to win its remaining matches either.

It could even come down to Hawks v Eagles in R23 for a top 4 finish. I'm loving how tight the top of the ladder is this season.

Depends on where we'd have to travel, and how our remaining games go. If we lose again to Sydney, then obviously travelling to Sydney for a final wouldn't be much fun, although that game might not be at the SCG, so might not be as scary as it might be. If Sydney do hang on to top spot, they'll have very much earned it, but seems more likely Adelaide will take that given their easy run from here. Wouldn't mind travelling to Adelaide, we beat them fairly easily at the MCG, and seem to have improved since then (despite tonight's first quarter and eventual loss :) ). Travelling to Perth is probably the worst option, as for that to happen West Coast would have had to hit a purple patch, and it is probably the biggest home ground advantage of the potential away teams, fortunately this seems to be the least likely of the interstate options.

Still think we have some chance of making top 2 though. 1 horrid quarter is not panic stations, given how well we recovered, and Sydney will be doing very well if they can hold their place, given the games they have coming up, but certainly on form it wouldn't be a surprise to see them keep top 2, and have us travelling in week 1.

Exactly. Hawks did plenty wrong, but when rioli caught Duncan the game should have been over then.
Look forward to your posts about (a) the most obvious throw of all time which wasn't called, robbing the Cats of a shot on goal about 25 metres out directly in front (b) Mackie being pinged for jumping in the air and contesting the mark while facing the ball with no interference of any kind to a Hawks player (c) the free to the Hawks inside 50 for a push in the back by Lonergan in which he did no such thing (d) the amazing new rule where the Hawks can play on to advantage for a downfield free kick when play has stopped completely.

Or in your universe are dodgy calls only important in the last minute of the game?

Oh, and in the context of the game and the way the last quarter was umpired that was never holding the ball in a million years. If they called that they would also have had to call about 20 others by Cats and Hawks players alike.

Love the arrogance of Hawks fans, even now it's all about how the Hawks were "asleep" in the first quarter - not that the Cats came out breathing fire and utterly smashed them. Put huge pressure on the man which prevented Hawthorn from taking advantage of their excellent foot skills, which led to turnovers. Then the Cats worked very hard to break on the rebound.

Oh, and:

3. Made Paul Chapman angry in 2008.

Really surprised that nobody has mentioned when Cyril Rioli when he had the ball and was running into an open forward line and then stopped and propped to look to pass the ball off instead of running an extra few yards and having a shot at goal.

That's the point I'm making
If it was franklin everyone would be sooking, just want some fareness

Add to that, Hawkins has next to no arc normally, so dunno how it could be "natural"
Seems that's exactly what you've got. You're sooking and everyone else is fine with it. I seem to recall a clear throw from a Hawks defender in the Cats goal square in those last few minutes that wasn't punished too. Seriously, anybody blaming umpiring for last night has no clue.

you'll regret that comment in a year or two

just saying

Only if St Kilda recruits Schoenmakers.

Yeah Rioli stuffed up there, should have kept going and had a shot at goal. That came straight after Burgoyne's rugby throw though so it would have been an undeserved goal if he kicked it.

what about Taylor's mistake in the 3rd which led to an instant goal or the play-on-advantage goal as all Geelong (and a couple of the Hawthorn) players completely stopped but he just ran unopposed and kicked a easy goal.

There were countless decision for both sides which were crucial in hindsight

A few shots at goal, including in the last few minutes, that could and should have been goals, Rioli not running off Taylor to take a shot, that final play by Puopolo, all NQR decisions under Cats' pressure - and then Geelong players did everything perfectly in the last 50 seconds. Amazing finish.

Cyril was playing pretty well, but the one thing that did make me think of was the "Lewis Jetta vs. Cyril Rioli" thread on here- I can't see Lewis ever pulling up there.

Puopolo made a couple of bad mistakes in the last few minutes, missed a pretty easy shot at goal which could have buried Geelong and then with less than a minute to go tried to snap goal of the year from the pocket and just kicked it across the face straight to a Geelong player who cleared it down the ground for the winning goal. If Puopolo had just held the ball up in the pocket or even kicked a point Hawthorn probably would have won, all easy to say in hindsight though.
