That was an absolute pumping after bowling out India for 150, honestly didn't see it coming despite having our issues with the bat heading in. We can respond in Adelaide but our top order is looking very shaky, bowling is always strong but does look tired in 2nd innings.

Going down 2-0 would be disaster and you'd expect changes if that happens, can't see any heading into Adelaide though. Hope McSweeney gets a decent run, George Bailey should be sacked before he gets dropped.

I'm surprised how poor Bailey has been as a selector considering he suffered and struggled to get a run as a player due to a boys club mentality.

Good piece on Jaiswal on Fox, I have a better feeling about him then any other Indian cricket in my 30 years of watching cricket, he'll be a all time great.

There’s a little bit of Virender Sehwag about him albeit he’s got a bit more attitude: doesn’t seem to worry too much what’s going on around him, doesn’t pay much attention to the match situation or the guy with the ball in their hand, just plays what’s there in front of him.

"Australian captain Pat Cummins has shot down the likelihood of axings from the side’s badly struggling top order despite the Aussies slumping to a 295-run defeat in the first Test.

Cummins also revealed that Mitch Marsh had been sore at times during the match and wasn’t certain whether the all-rounder would be able to bowl throughout the entire series."

sounds like we need to start planning for a replacement for Marsh ASAP

Not according to his Cricinfo page.

Marnus played shield against both WA and SA, and the one day cup games against both, followed by the two one dayers against Pakistan.
Apologies. You're correct, Marnus has played 2 out of the 4 possible Shield matches. I went back and checked the others and found I'd missed one for Carey as well. Original post now fixed.

I'd still maintain that our preparation for this test is nothing short of deplorable. Why we feel the need to rest test players that have had the winter off is beyond me. And some rubbish one-dayers v Pakistan doesn't make up for it.

Its not just his low scores these days, his strike rate is also very concerning.

If you go back and watch peak Smith, he often started extremely slow and weathered the storm if the opposition was bowling well just back then he never got out and cashed in.

Realistically we need to hope Konstas & Cooper Connelly develop quickly, because the cupboard is bare.

Smith isn’t cooked. He’s still a champion & our most likely to go big.

Head is streaky, but the opposition would view him as very dangerous.

But beyond that - Marnus has become a walking wicket, McSweeney isn’t an opener (or yet test class), Khawaja is about to turn 38, Carey averages 30 in first class cricket & Marsh is ….. Marsh.

It’s a poor top 7, whose weakness has been covered by a class bowling attack. Most of whom are now near the end too.

Agreed, every Test player should have played minimum 2 Shield Games.

Kind of wild to think they've just had a generational win and, yet, India will make more changes for Adelaide than we will.

Expect we're in for a week of "well, who would you drop?" think pieces from Brettig, Conn, Craddock et al, but Inglis is in the squad, Patterson's form is reasonable, Bancroft seems to be getting bat on ball for the first time in months, Henry Hunt hit 100 and Webster has just hit 60 and taken three wickets.

There are options there, but accountability isn't really in the playbook of the current squad or its leadership.

covered up by weak opposition, happens all the time when we get a run of bad opposition, we look like world beaters, Aussie fans are cockahoot then we hit a wall in the marquee series.

Rohit Sharma will come in and probably Jadeja, so there team gets better, alot better.

they have hung onto this group food too long. Writing was on the wall in India, that’s when Marnus started to have his struggles. Warner should never have gotten a farewell tour, that showed Bailey and co don’t have a spine. Smith should’ve retired last summer as well, but they wanted to see if he could to try and paper over something for a few more years. To hang on to something
Ask yourself why they did that? And clearly I agree with yiu

Well we’re never cockahoop are we. When we’re beating up on weak opposition we whinge about how uncompetitive the cricket is, and when we lose we get the pitchforks out.

That’s the Australian way.

we lose all the big series because the selectors think everythings going well when we bash up on the crap sides and we don't improve.

First class matches played so far this Australian season:

McSweeney 4 (2 for Aus-A)
Khawaja 3
Labuschagne 2
Smith 1
Head 1
Marsh 2
Carey 3
Starc 1
Cummins 0
Lyon 2
Hazlewood 1

And yet, there have been 4 rounds of the Sheffield Shield played. The 5th round is playing concurrrently with this test, and 6th round will run concurrently with the second test. 7th round? February.

Beyond first class matches, our preparation was a series of t20 & ODIs v Scotland and England in September, and more of the same v Pakistan in November - that most of our test side sat out of. No test cricket over our winter.

Meanwhile, India's prep was a 3 test series v NZ.

Are we surprised at what is happening?

Edit: Sorry, missed one match for each of Labu & Carey - fixed now.

Hubris.

Bancroft?!

I know you sandgropers are a tad parochial, but here’s his recent first class scores:

12
11
3

16
8
2

Bancroft is not the answer.

To any question.

the squad was only for the 1st Test, so now it should be a non-factor.

bring on the media articles about trying to solve the problems with Australian cricket and selection, makes for good reading.
