I know he was in essence a freebie and probably necessary just to meet the cap floor but I just don’t get the point of him.
Conceptually, I don’t understand
Plays ruck and forward. Gives depth. Can play a role if we get injuries and may well be a better option as second ruck / forward than using Phillips as the second ruck. If we get something out of him as the second ruck who has forward ability then we can play Jones at CHF if needed. People said the same thing about Wright. We did not just get him to make the cap floor. He actually fits a gap we have in the list. All clubs end up with guys who could only be on the list for 2 or 3 years and fill short term spots. On a few occasions they end up like Peter Wright.I know he was in essence a freebie and probably necessary just to meet the cap floor but I just don’t get the point of him.

I certainly hope so. Wright at least we all knew coming in had a good set of hands and could kick missiles better than just about everyone and there was an element of mystery as to why he wasn’t getting a good crack on the GC. Bit exotic and mysterious.
Weideman really couldn’t have hoped for better circumstances to make it and hasn’t really impressed and for all the talk of ‘can play ruck or we may trial him as a defender’ I’m yet to see anything to indicate he can do either.
Willing to give it a go because the stakes are real low, I just don’t see it.
Did we know that ? One of the knocks was he dropped a lot of marks and is still prone to doing so at times. I think 90% where saying the same as you are about Weideman. Watch the VFL GF and tell me he can not play some ruck.
You mean you need to see more than a few quarters of match simulation before working out if the guy is the next Matthew Lloyd or next Jay Neagle?Still have my doubts about weid.
Seen him for 8 years at MelbourneYou mean you need to see more than a few quarters of match simulation before working out if the guy is the next Matthew Lloyd or next Jay Neagle?
Nope.I've been trying to work out who he rucked against in that GF because he's not looked up to it when I've seen him at AFL level.
I think I recall the Southport ruck is some bulky hairy mother who is about 6'4.
Yeah this kind of feels like a 'free hit' in all honesty. If it fails we brought in a guy who was a highly talented and touted junior, who'd been in the system for almost a decade and gave it a shot. We don't lose much. If it works and somehow we pull a diamond out of a bloke that so far has producing pyrite then WIN!I certainly hope so. Match centre says Southport's ruck was Brayden Crossley
Former Gold Coast ruckman, 6'6 and over 100kg, or so spake Wikipedia:

Wikipedia says he was also a white powder aficionado, which gave him a 12 month suspension and probably ended his attempted AFL career.
Bonus point because the match centre has a link to a full replay of the match.
Of course there is a big question mark. That is why he was traded for cheap. Same as Wright who was a big question mark as he could not get a game in a crap side. What is it about cheap and depth for a couple of seasons that is the issue ? No one is saying he is going to be a super star.Admittedly the numbers are closer than I anticipated but Wright at GC is the more prolific contested marker and marker inside 50 of the two. Playing in an absolutely rubbish side as well so there’s probably an element of loading there too.
I do recall him being very good in the VFL grand final but is wrestling Brayden Crossley in a mud pit at Ikon park really rucking? We play most of our games under a roof.
A big tick for general competitiveness for sure because that’s been a big question mark with him as well but at 197 without a massive spring and not a great deal of craft on show he doesn’t really have a lot going for him.
Yep, I thought he was good. Presented well (good as outlet from defensive 50) and was very good in the ruck when needed.Significantly outplayed Jones and could argue was better performed than Wright in the two praccies.
Would think he is a shoe in for round 1.
Weideman is a mature body who doesn't like contact and we might play him as a defender.I thought he was supposed to do second ruck/fwd so Wright can spend more time in the forward line. Which means he’s the one to beat for Bryan and Phillips if they want a spot.
Bryan is still building, would hope he starts getting semi-regular games toward the back end of this year but he should be #1 ruck in the 2s, and really honing his forward craft swapping with Phillips so he’s not completely useless after the ball is bounced.
Between Wright, Weideman, Voss, Jones and Stringer we should have 2-3 of them available with their habit of getting injured. The rest of the forward line should be smalls and a rotating mid.
Baldwin seems to be playing in defence which makes sense when you consider that Cox, Reid and Stewart are currently injured. Weideman might end up in defence too if we get any more injuries there, atm Laverde and BZT are holding down key posts which is not ideal and I don’t think we want Ridley tied to that role either.
I think what Weideman is at the very least is a plug and play mature body that gives us rotations and cover at both ends and can also teach the young guys a bit. If he ends up winning the Crichton then so much the better.
Was walking around unhindered at the family day today so should be fine
And Matthew Scarlett's father played for Geelong, but Matthew changed to Essendon after seeing Lloyd play well when we beat Geelong down at KardiniaMatthew Lloyd's father played for Carlton. Lloyd himself barracked for Fitzroy. It's catching.
