He’s a good player and wasn’t a tragic pick.

McLuggage would have been better

I think the thing McGrath has against him is that while he’s disciplined and effective, he doesn’t have the top level of slickness, poise, class etc

There are are worse players who look better
“There are worse players who look better” is a brilliant summary for a lot of the discussion on this thread

I think peoples issue with McGrath is offensively he’s often terrible and gives up just as many goals as his one on one defensive efforts save through poor skills and decision making.

Halfbacks/ small defenders are some of the most impactful attacking players in the comp when they safely and reliably start offensive chains.

Doesn’t have to be a mid or forward to be effective/a star. It’s just offensively is a guy that you’d consider a 5th option back there after Ridley Reid Redman and Sheil and no1 picks shouldn’t be your 5th option offensively in their group and a bottom 10 user in the best 22

Like he’s fine. Probably the 12th-15th best player on the team and a locked in starting quality player for a decade or more. But overall just a really poor outcome from that level of pick

Another year, another incoming shit year from McGrath it would seem.

He will never get better. He'll have his moments or a good month and then just be this average player.

dumb player when it matters
Yeah this is my issue. He is not as bad as everyone makes out and generally is our best small defender but as more senior members of our backline both he and Redman lack any composure when the heat is on.
I noticed this last year in the 2nd game against the crows, was one of the first games heppell was dropped for and you would expect these two to take over as backline leaders but they just run around like headless chicken.
Was disappointed when I saw both given leadership roles, I understand both show a lot of leadership off field, but then have one of them in the group not both.
