Great idea for a thread and very well supported.
I'll just add that quick = great leg speed.
Mind numbing and a little condescending how each commentator wants his own signature remark.
Reminds me of management…. everything old is new again …. only because its been re- badged.

Wayne Harmes - 1979 Grand Final. So as the ball was heading out of bounds off his own kick, Harmesy refuses to concede, chases the ball down and fists it goalwards to a waiting Ken Sheldon for the winning goal.
Wayne Harmes - inaugural Norm Smith medallist from that GF, 3 x Carlton premiership...

Must agree… with limited opportunities Sam Mayes was a standout today.
I thought that last tear he was more of a HBF or wing. He even spent a little time in the mid-field in the 4th quarter.
Looking forward to him getting even more involved.

Been wanting to do this for some time.... so the Sunday morning before the count was as good a time as any.
Much talk that in recent years that the Brownlow is a medal for midfielders. Here in lies part of the problem.... 'recent years' and 'midfielders'.
Permit me to...
Well said.
A few points for what they are worth.....
1. Of course the natural focus of attention is physical fitness...... but it there is also a mental dimension as well. What comes first physical or mental fatigue, poor execution or poor decision making?
2.Perhaps sports science most...

22 St Kilda players were killed in action during WWII. 22 players make up a modern day AFL team.
What chance each player has something added to his jersey to honour a fallen Saint?
Looking forward to a very special occasion.

Turnovers (so I nominated decision making).
As a team we make too many errors in this regard. We work hard to get it but often lose momentum if not possession by poor ownership of the footy.
If possession is 9/10s of the law.. so too is footy.
Cheers and Merry Xmas

Here it is..... the annual santa's sack where you get to wish something for your team.
Mine will be brief.... a top eight finish for the Lions.
Merry Christmas to all at BigFooty.

I hope you don't mind the intrusion....... here's an update on Gav Urquhart. Just remember he did not write the headline.
Please re-locate/ delete if not in the appropriate location.

Hawthorn had made the first real exploration of this new frontier whe they stumped about $30 000 to NZAFL a few years ago. The Falcons became the Hawks and their national jersey became a Hawthorn one, albeit in black and silver.
The Hawks realised that with their present sponsorship...

There are couple of clubs - rugby union in England that are older - but Melbourne are the oldest club that started in and are still playing in their respective country's elite competition.

It would be ironic that he won a flag (as a coach) before either Hird or Voss.
Alan Jeans always said that as a coach you had to have the cattle .... so Buckley does have an impressive stockyard of talent, but they are still very much in need of coaching.
Give ceredit where its due .... thus...
Once tipped that Essendon's Darren Bewick would win a Brownlow ..... a decade or so later a couple of gingers in Voss and Aker did!
What was I thinking?

I'll plump for Heath Scotland - on the basis of adding the quality of both feet - he is without peer.
I lament that too many juniors are encouraged to get onto their dominant side - that's assuming they can evade tacklers - and not spending some quality time in practice...
Can't contribute directly, but have a look at who is next to Dipper on the boundary .... none other than rugby league immortal Wally Lewis.
He has since said that this collision changed how he viewed Australian football.
Lachie Henderson
Out of all the Lions players - Rischatelli, Brennan, Sherman et al - I'd thought I'd miss Henderson lest of all.
Of late his form has been by far the best of this lot.

Good point.
I am old enough to remember Barassi designing a boot in the late seventies. IIRC it was made by adidas, a mid cut boot with a hard box toe and screw in stops/ tags, six in the fore foot and 2 under the heel.
Legend has it that the boot was designed on a napkin whilst having lunch...
In the modern game players are instructed - read they will get dropped if they don't it - to handball to the player coming past/ through. The ball giver is not responsible that the receiver has a clear pathway.
It is the receiver who needs to be ahead of the play and not to call for it if he...

Bold words indeed.
I've been following footy for 40 years... back then it was Collingwood V Carlton and for mine it still is, mainly becasue no matter where the two sides are on the ladder, it is still the ol' enemy.
I have enjoyed the closeness of recent Hawks/ Cats clashes and...
