We will be doing that in 12-24 months time

People thinking that StKilda have a monster war chest have not seen anything yet with the way Richmond is setting up

$17.7 mil cap space in 2025 means we can pay
80% of Hopper & Taranto's remaining contract
60% of Noah Balta's remaining contract
Broad , Vlastuin , Short we can pay out their remaining contracts by 80%

The rest are all kids and we can bank cap space for 2 years
Richmond will have min 6-7 million cap space just in 2026

It'll be interesting. If the AFL follow through and allow pick purchasing we might be able to get a few first round picks and maybe pick someone up as well.

I reckon we will be in the hunt for players from around 2027, as our team is maturing. If we can get someone very good (Reid) now then OK. But right now build the squad with as much talent as possible, then go hard at filling gaps when we know what we actually have on our hands.

Im pretty sure pick purchasing will not be coming in this year and maybe not even next year but that really doesnt effect what we do going foward as we can bank cap space for 2 years and still utilize the banked cap space to foward pay in our banked space to pay our new draftee's in 2027/8 allowing the banked $3 mil plus to roll foward.
But i would be pretty certain we would be looking to bring in 2 free agents in 2026 & 2027 depending on available players

This is why we can be flexible with our drafting this year and just go best available talent rather than positional needs
Blair and our recruitment team will have a plan going foward in which players we are going to need to fill holes and target accordingly. My only concern would be if Harley Reid requests a trade he may be too tempting to not go after and we could change tact.

Makes sense.

No idea with the pick purchasing. Last year the AFL suggested this year it'd be go. But they are never worth believing.

A player that would be a "Keep an eye on" Would be Sam Walsh
If Carlton retain TDK and are stretched in their cap i can see Blair targeting Walsh
He is a quality top tier transitional mid that has suffered from lost form due to back surgery which usually takes a few years to get back from.

100% correct -got told by a triple premiership former Carlton star that their cap is bulging and more backloading to come -they have no room at all.

It's Richmond or bombers

If Hawthorn get Reid, then the system is broken

And West Coast would need a massive clean out of their off field

There is going to be a tough market for ready made players in 2027. Due to teams picks getting relegated it will be tougher to trade for players. So the FA markets are likely to be hotly contested. Then add in Taz themselves will be trading for players & trying to get FA’s. Also teams will lose players to Taz.

Our club will know this. If we can get ready made players as FA’s or in trades 25&26 we shouldn’t be messing around. At least get in there pushing prices right up to create an even bigger salary squeeze for teams under pressure. I expect us to be getting multiple pre-loved players each of the next two off seasons, whether they are Scrimshaw, Meek, Chol d’ambrosio lower cost trades, or Keays, Hinge type cast offs, or even big name high cost players. If they look like what we need and come at fair cost, we should pounce while we can. It may not be easy later.

There were around 5-7 useful medium term + players traded in the compromised drafts 2010-12. But 2009 & 2013 that figure was more like 9-10. I am sure Blair will have all this thought through.

His body is already failing. Basically hurting his back or a hammy every year.

Think in 27/28 we will be going hard for top line free agents.

Just to add, it took a lot of goes at trying cast offs/less wanted players like Matt Thomas, Aaron Edwards, Ricky Pettard but we ultimately had a heap of success with Grigg, Houli, trading for Nank and Caddy. I think we should be active this year trying a few different types. The delistings this year are unclear but over the next two years we should lose all of Lynch, Kmac, Prestia and we will have to make decisions on guys like Dow, Smith, Sonsie etc. Sometimes it's better to make the harsh call and try someone external for a year to see if they are up to it rather than persist with guys that haven't cemented a spot yet.

One player I think we should target hard is Sam Butler from the Hawks, brother of Dan. He is injured at the moment after a bad leg break last year but due back soon. He's going to find it extremely difficult to crack a consistent game in this hawks team. Out of contract this year. Fast. Can play mid and forward.

Averages 15 disposals, 3.5 marks and 1.5 goals per game in the VFL, but was killing it last year before the injury (17 disposals and 2.5 GPG).

Could probably get Jai Serong on the cheap too. Plus Hicksys man Hustwaite.

Change our jumper to poo and wee while we are at it

Poo and fluro gold.

Smart play to pick off these fringe guys from good teams.....like what used to happen to us
Agree. Cheap young castoffs is perfect for us. No idea if they're the right players but definitely the right philosophy.

Makes lot of sense. Tassie will squeeze eh market very tight just when we are after those solid role players. But we also don't want to trade in too many of these more mature B grade players who will stop us playing the kids where we hope to get A graders.

Interesting balancing act made more difficult by Tasmania.

In talking about all this I am amazed that clubs like North end up with an unbalanced list, that needs dramatic surgery in the coming years. If we can see how this will evolve sitting on BF, why can't professionals work it out? Just does my head in.

Following on from that, I am so impressed by how Richmond have structured the rebuild. By getting high quality players for the spine, midfield and a couple of X factor types we just have to fill in holes around a solid structure. We can have a few failures and most likely will still have a good structure. A lot of draft watchers seemed surprised by our drafting last year. And then sat down and looked at it and went 'Ooohh!, That's clever.' yeah, just draft pick by pick and don't think about the end result. It may not work, but we have potential A graders right through our spine and midfield, with some genuine OMG talent around them. Good development and we are cooking with a plasma torch.
