Why only there?

He is an endurance beast. Excellent mark, very strong and has great judgement.

He can play around the ground as a follower. Play back, play forward...and yes would also still ruck.

With no strict positions in football anymore apart from ruck at the ball ups I can also see TDK and Marshall working in tandem by roaming around different parts of the ground.

I can certainly see how he and TDK can be meshed.

Plus TDK will play on after Marshall retires.
You won’t need to worry about it anyway - it’s moot!

I don’t believe, given the choice of Dustin Martin in his prime & TDK, that anybody would choose TDK - let alone St Kilda who already has a great ruckman.

In any case, he’s staying at The Blues - jacking his contract up beautifully.
What you are failing to comprehend is they have banked the cap space and MUST use it otherwise they will lose it, I believe (could be mistaken on the years) that you can only bank 3 years of the cap total of 7.5% as somebody mentioned above
So if they have the $3 mil excess than they would just front load his contract and have $1 mil a year remaining for the last 3-4 years of the contract.

Lets not forget Carlton would probably be happy to go to $1.3 to sign him up and its only $400k more than what your club could afford.

But as a Carlton supporter it would suck to lose him for a pick around 7/8

Sam Edmund ran with a $3m difference between the life of the 2 deals.

That’s probably an average afl listed player a year in difference.

They also discussed how much he stands to earn from his Carlton association if he stays vs Saints, after his career.

Much more than “reported” $3m over his lifetime.

It’s likely the $1.7m is a fabrication of TDK’s managers’ mind in any case :).

Getting it out there!

Irrelevant really.

They don’t get better keeping him. They get worse having that list remain and all those massive deals

Someone being of the opinion that TDK stays rather than goes is not irrelevant to the discussion.

It is the discussion.

However, whether they get better, worse, stay the same, implode, sack 7 coaches throughout TDK's playing career etc. is irrelevant and is better off discussed elsewhere.

Thanks.

Sign with the Saints and have a shot at winning a Premiership/s

Stay at Carlton and play out the rest of your career in a rebuild ..... for less money
Once again assuming Carlton need to rebuild...

Curnow - 28
Weitering - 27
Mckay - 27
Silvagni - 27
TDK - 25
Cerra - 25
Walsh - 24
E.Hollands - 22
Moir - 20
Jagga - 19

With 4 F/S and NGA kids to come this year and the likely pick 1 for next year as a F/S too.

Theres plenty to work with in a future with TDK at Carlton.

You’re dodging my question.

If you were SOS, would you spend 1.7m x 7 years on a ruckman(albeit a very good one), given you already have one, or a “Dusty” in his prime, as you’ve suggested.

They won’t be able to do both - they also need to allow some room to pay their own players

Actually St Kilda can. They have been topping up the early years of other players contracts so they can go hard the next two years. Obviously Nasiah is the most important current player they need to extend, but they have the monet reserved for this.

They have also positioned the their salary cap with the current and planned contracts so that they can pay over 100% the next two years. ITDK is secured that includes paying him overs early.

So the question is not can St Kilda afford to pay multiple RFA/FAs next FA period (they can), the question is can they actually land one or more (they may not).

- or they’ll have another “Battle” on their hands.

In the Battle case more money would not have retained him. There was more money available. Plus the temptation to gain an extra early pick was there.

It’s a long year ahead …
It is.

our ITK’s have said he’s signing at Carlton in any case.

Well we will have to wait and see, and I certainly have no idea whether he will stay or go.

I very much doubt your ITKs would as yet really know.

How each Club goes this year may well influence TDKs decision.

To increase your offer to be higher to TDK, but still well below the St Kilda offer, it may well be that you would need to trade out one of your higher $ contracted players.

look at the last 10 premiership ruckman....
Besides Gawn, none are really stand out superstars....
Saints should spend their money elsewhere IMO.
In an ideal world we would but there’s not to many elite midfielders that are available or want to come to us . We can’t bank salary any longer we either bring a good player in or there’s going to be some average players well overpaid over coming seasons just to meet our salary cap floor

people tend to forget that contract can also be backended like nick haynes was with gsw. TDK and carlton can easily negotiate a deal as an example 1 mill first year and 2.5 mill year 5.

there are many ways to do contracts to fit in the salary cap whether the player or the club want to is the main story here. Surely such an important player like TDK just need to say to carlton I want to stay and contract can be arranged by tomorrow.

Would hope so. I'd have him in our top 2 most important players to hold onto at this stage.

then the question is why hasnt he committed yet? is he genuinely want to go another team in case he feel carlton is a "sinking ship" for next few years?
I would assume it has more to do with what a club that actually has other players worth paying is willing to pay a ruckman.

There's unfortunately a big discrepancy between the two parties involved in this situation.

I dont believe it has anything to do with the way Carlton are performing but more the difference in the offers are too far apart reported to be $1.1 mil v $1.7 mil

I genuinely believe if Carlton move upto $1.5 he would sign and take a $200k a year less
But can or will Carlton increase their offer ?

I personally think they will and he will stay a Blue

that's what i mean by structure a backend contract, if Carlton cap is tight next year, do 1 mill year one, and 2.8 mill year 4 when they can budget it.

if is not a salary cap issue, blues genuinely think TDK is only worth 1.1 mill then the choice for TDK is clear.

Yes and he probably is only worth that
But Williams was never worth $900k or McKay worth $1 million but Carlton and Essendon payed that because they were free agents as St Kilda will do if TDK accepts the offer

I’d imagine working out a cap for 43 other blokes from the position they are in now, so that a single bloke can be paid just shy of $3m would be hard.

I also imagine factoring in deals for Curnow Walsh Cripps McKay Weitering on top of that would be close to impossible.

It’s taken the saints years to build a cap to make an offer like this and not feel its impact. It’s not a situation you can just manufacture overnight.
