He was objectively performing better, Gibcus barely got near it in the 2's. When he came straight back into the side it was pretty confusing given his VFL performances, which plenty mentioned at the time. I'm not hanging s**t on him he's an obvious talent and will go past Young and not look back but will take a bit of time. Shift forward might even be worth a try given his rare assets.
They did back Gibcus in more than they might have if he wasn't such a talent. By the time he got to the VFL he was shot and needed a rest, two pretty average weeks in the VFL, a spell if you like.

But he will be much better for another preseason. A lot of match simulation goes on before rd.1, a good deal of that he would have missed or not really fully included in as a first year, so he should be a fair bit better, given his quality. So I hope they back him in early. If he needs a spell then do it and rotate Young or Biggy through his spot if needed.

I don't think forward is his go right now. For one thing he will spend his time trying not to get in Jack or Lynch's way and think it more important to get some time into Miller forward (2nd ruck) so he can feel like he belongs there.

Reckon Gibcus will surprise this year.

Young did well when he started to feel comfortable at that level towards the end of the season, but that's a big stretch to say he looks better than Gibcus, stronger but that is the only area he looks to have it over him.

According to reports young played very well rounds 1-3 in lock down, defensive roles and was handy if the ruck his next game.

He may have, but his last 1/3 of the season was where he really came on, also played ruck in a couple of those matches too and was pretty good.
But we didn't draft him as best 22 this year, down the track you never know.

If one of Jack or Lynch is out, we will be ok.
Can easily revert back to the 2017 set up where Cumberland takes the Caddy role and we are dangerous enough to put up a winning score.

The main topic post is spot on though. It would be alarm bells if both couldn’t get up for a 4 week block or so, we would struggle aerially in the forward line.

Hopefully with Taranto and Hopper we even out at clearances at worst as our supply was dreadful in ‘22 and it put our reliable backline under significant pressure for a lot of the year.

Riewoldt can't be expected to play at 2017- super human levels again

He really only needs to play a role and kick his 35 goals a season

Richmond have foward fire power that not many team possess
Bolton - Lynch - Cumberland
Martin - Riewoldt - Rioli (jnr)

With ball deliver and support from a midfield consisting of
Prestia-Hopper-Taranto-Cotchin-Graham-Sonsie-Nankervis

We have a bloody good team

We were a bees dick off being the best side last year. Now we're just taking the piss.

If both Lynch and Riewoldt are out at the same time:
Ryan contesting and bringing the ball to ground for the smalls - in VFL he seems to get into the right spots but doesn't hold as many marks as he should.
Miller as 2nd KPF if form holds up,
Cumberland as a mid-sized forward.

Balta/Gibcus pinch-hitting as swingmen but mostly back.

In play I'd have Dusty and Bolton high and allow the others space. Changing it up by pushing Dusty deep and bring the others out.

Add to that midfield our wingers in McIntosh and Pickett, developing youngsters in Ralphsmith and Ross, and I'd be inclined to use Short as a defensive midfielder. Soldo as the 2nd ruck. There's a bakers dozen right there.

Defensive talls Broad, Balta, Tarrant, Gibcus, possibly Miller with Grimes playing tall or small. Smaller runners in D Rioli and Baker, with back up from Mansell.

Delicious talent there. Competition for spots will provide hunger.

Reasonable luck with injury, if we get our headspace right, we're going to shake the life out of the 2023 premiership. I can smell it.
