What if 15 of the greatest tall forwards played 306 games (like coventry)

I understand you have chosen 15 of the best forwards at random, but it is interesting to note that there are other players who would have passed 1000 goals going by this concept. As a Bulldogs fan I calculated Simon Beasley would have kicked 1143 goals. Bob Pratt's 4.31 career average would have seen him finish with 1319 goals, whilst Essendon's Tom Reynolds 3.26 average would have given him 999.

A couple more):
  • Templeton would've kicked 1025 goals in 306 games
  • If Jeremy Cameron maintains his current goal average and played 306 games, he'll finish with 801 goals.
  • Ron Todd wouldve kicked 1316 goals in 306 games
  • George Margitich wouldve kicked 1089 goals in 306 games
  • Wacko Jacko wouldve kicked 1151 goals in 306 games
  • Ted Potter (182 games, 0 goals) wouldve kicked 0 goals in 306 games.

I brainstormed 15 of the greatest tall forwards ever (not the 15 best, just 15 of the best) and of those 15, G. Coventry played the most games.
What if we scaled all of their goals to match his games tally?

Which ever way you slice and dice it, there is an argument or case for only either Lockett, Hudson & Coleman.

You can give comparisons @ 306 game mark, but end of the day, they either weren't good enough to play that amount of games for one reason or another.

Only Dunstall, McKenna, Pratt, Coventry, Ablett & Wade), have averaged 4+ goals throughout their career and stand on the tier below the big 3.

Special mentions to:
*Ron Todd: (if you include his VFA stats): 999 (217) @ 4.60
*Fred Cook (VFA) : 1336 (300) @ 4.45 - Two seasons (Yarraville/Moorabbin) were in Div 2 of VFA, and his first 6 years was as a swingman backman/forward.
He did manage 33 games @ Footscray/Western Bulldogs before heading off to the VFA.
*Rino Pretto (VFA): 1070 (221) @ 4.84 - A lot of his footy was in Div 2, and his first 3 seasons were as a full back.
He did manage 1 game @ Fitzroy before heading off to the VFA.
*George Doig (WAFL): 1095 (202) @ 5.42 - Kicked 100 goals in a season on 9 consectitive occasions @ East Fremantle.
*Bernie Naylor (WAFL): 1034 (194) @ 5.33.
*Ken Farmer (SANFL): 1417 (224) @ 6.33 - Kicked 100 goals in a season on 11 consectitive occasions @ North Adelaide and once kicked 23 goals in a game.
Smaller grounds and weaker opposition is generally considered a factor here, nevertheless great stats.
*Peter Hudson (TFL): 994 (159) @ 6.25 - His stats at Glenorchy are insane.

Franklin will go well beyond the 306 game mark that you have based your above stats on.
He should at a minimum get to 4th place as he only needs another 114 goals and should play another 50 games or so.

Facts are Coleman & Hudson had ifs and buts with their career, but so too did Lockett.

Lockett's first 4 years of his career included time @ CHF and in the ruck and the last 3 years (plus his comeback) he slowed up, yielding a total 466 goals in 128 games at still a healthy average of 3.64. In this period he only missed 33 games.
This also includes his ill fated comeback after 3 years out of the game @ age 36.
His average did peak at 5.06 (1114 /220)

Interesting to note Plugger kicked 894 goals in 153 games in a 10 year period 1987-96 @ 5.84. (A higher career rate than Hudson & Coleman yet neither played 10 years). He also missed 71 games during this period in his peak. Now these are ifs and buts but had he played the majority of those, he could have ended up with 1284 in 222 games in that period and an unreachable total of 1750 in 350 @ 5.00.
This would have also seen Plugger kick 100 goals in '88,'89,'90,'93,'94,99 making it 12 times in 13 seasons.
1997 he was coming back off an injury and didn't get alot of game time on the ground.
He could've easily played in the season 2000 and possibly played 300 (or the magical 306 games we are talking about) as his form suggested but he chose to retire and was only 33 years old. In hindsight he shouldn't have come back at age 36 (3 goals/3 games).

He was the quickest to reach 1000 goals - 201 games.
Incredible considering Franklin still has 56 goals to break the 1000 barrier and has already played 300 games.
An incredible:
- 145 bags of 5+
- 74 bags of 7+
- 22 bags of 10+
- 10 bags of 12+
- 3 bags of 13+
1989 & 1991 should have been the seasons he kicked 150+ but unfortunately didn't play enough games.

At the age of 21, had more goals (235) than any other player other the Pratt (246).
Only player to have 1000 goals before the age of 30 (1008) - Dunstall (999).
Along with Wade, was the only player to kick 100 at 2 clubs.
Only player to kick 100+ at 2 clubs on more than 2 occasions each.
Only Ablett (516) and Coventry (514) to kick more goals after the age of 30 - Lockett (352).
Only player to kick 10+ on more than 2 occasions at 2 clubs (Modra once @ Freo, Franklin once @ Hawthorn, Taylor once @ Richmond).

While he may have been kept goalless on 13 occasions, many were early in his career and in games he got injured and missed the majority of the game.
His last 114 games he was not kept goalless.

One thing I don't take into account too much is the amount of All-Australians and Coleman medals they have.
I mean let's face it, if Hudson & Lockett had of played in era's without stiff competition and Coleman had of played longer, they would have had even more accolades.
There have been a few era's or waves of champion full forwards eg. Lockett, Dunstall, Ablett had to compete against each other and even on occasions kicked 100+ in a season not to win a Coleman medal. There was also the Hudson/McKenna/Wade era and Coventry/Pratt.
Some recent players such as Jack Riewoldt has won it 3 times with 78,65 & 65.

A pity Coleman & Hudson didn't play 250+ games to really compare numbers.
Could they perhaps have sustained their numbers ? We will never know.

What I do know though i that only Coleman & Hudson stand alongside Plugger.

great analysis
I will always stand by the fact that i rank Hudson as the best full forward ever and Coleman second. Theyre both in my top 5 players of all time with lockett the next best FF at 6 or 7. Hudson's overall career extending beyond AFL is ridicolous. 300 odd games and over 2000 goals.

State Games: 288/51 @ 5.65
Preseason Comp: 182/33 @ 5.52
TOTAL: 2191/372 @ 5.89

Regardless of the quality of opposition, freakish numbers in anyone's language.
Not only that, but Hudson was basically able to maintain his average at the very top level.

You left out Carey's 600 goal assists.

I remember the media talking about Lockett possibly kicking 200 in a season if everything went right. In one season possibly 88 or 89 wasn’t he on about 63 goals after 8 games then got either injured or suspended?

1989 - 9,10,8,5,5,6,6,9,12 = 70 after round 9.

Was suspended in r9 for 4 weeks for striking guy mckenna.

Came back in time for State of Origin - kicked 5 in that (Lockett-Dunstall duo)

Played 2 more home and away games 3, 5 before injuries forced him out for the remainder of the season.

I never said this was a way to rank them. Im just talking about goal tallys

All good mate.

Here's an interesting one from left field.

Mark "Jacko" Jackson, 308 goals in 82 games (308/82 x 306 = 1149 goals)

Mark "Jacko" Jackson, 308 goals in 82 games (308/82 x 306 = 1149 goals)

Not only was Jacko a unique character and entertainer, but the guy could play.

A further 100 goals in 32 games (3.13) in the WAFL.
A further 131 goals for Richmond Reserves in the one season (He couldn't get a gig in the seniors because of Taylor & Roach)
A brief stint at the Saints playing 10 games in a row and dropped for disciplinary reasons and the emergence of first season player, Tony Lockett, only to not get a game again and head to Geelong.
Also played a handful of games with VFA side Brunswick.

Phil 'Snake' Baker 125/106 @ 1.18 = 361 from 306 games

He did take an awesome mark though and performed well in the grand finals he played.

Bernie Naylor kicked 1034 goals in 194 games @ 5.33
Ken Famer, perhaps the greatest ever WAFL forward, kicked 1419 goals in 224 games @ 6.33
Two of the best players to never come to the AFL alongside Barry Robran and a few others

As others have already pointed out, Bob Pratt is the obvious omission from the Top 10 list.

Jakovich simply hasn't played enough games to warrant inclusion in this comparative list either.
Do you need help reading?
I said I chose ten of the best, not THE ten best

Franklin seems an odd omission from the current players column?
He didn't play in Rd. 1, and AFL Tables won't count him as a "current player" until he plays a game this year. Without thinking about it too hard I imagine he will be on the top of that list as soon as he does play.

He has 944 goals from 300 games = 3.15 goals per game.

Your O/P stipulates 15 actually....Would you like to borrow my glasses?
whether its 10, 15 or 1000, where did i state that im ranking full forwards in terms of who I think is best?
At least you can ready numbers, but should practice reading words a little more mate.
