After a pre-season injury sidelined him for the first couple of months of the 2024 season, Sid Draper finally made his much awaited return over the weekend in a trial match for the SA Under-18 team against a combined Swans and Giants Academy squad. Drapers minutes were significantly limited here, playing only parts of the first two quarters, but he showed enough to get draft watchers excited for what he might produce when the Champs kick off in a couple of weeks.

Pick 1 doesn't even look great this year. It'll be an Andrew McGrath type of pick 1 year I think.

Just our luck but it doesn't look a generational talent type of pick.

Don't understand the hype for getting draft picks this year.
Heard nothing special about anyone and no obvious number 1 pick at the moment.
Also, we have to trust that the list mangement actually make the correct calls on these picks. Could easily be in a situation where we draft a bunch of Trengrove and Scully's.

Until we have a clear plan on what we want to achieve as a club for the next decade (Gale in 2009) we are going to be in no mans land just hoping for the best (Richmond 1983-2009)

Every one has a plan

Same as every club or we could draft really well given the good draft hand we will hold.
Time will tell but the doom and gloom comments about the current list are as expected. It ain’t anywhere near as bad as some think and promote, young kids need time and experience. You see that with every side when they go youth, and we are being forced to play them due to our absolutely horrendous injury run.

Some of the players that Chris Toce has had a hand in recruiting since 2010:
Alex Fasolo 104 games
Paul Seedsman 132 games
Jarryd Blair 157 games
Lachlan Keeffe 111* games
Jarrod Witts 173* games
Marley Williams 128 games
Brodie Grundy 204* games
Jordan De Goey 166* games
Brayden Maynard 196* games
Mason Cox 123* games

Jade Gresham 146* games
Ben Long 98* games
Josh Battle 110* games
Rowan Marshall 120* games
Hunter Clarke 87* games
Max King 78* games
Callum Wilkie 119* games
Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera 51* games
Mitchito Owens 40* games
Marcus Windhager 41* games
Matteas Phillipou 33* games
Darcy Wilson 10* games

While he wasn't the head recruiter in all of those instances, he was part of the recruiting team, so would have had some input into them being drafted. Some of them are early picks, while others are late round/rookie picks.

I also found it interesting that in an interview he did with the Saints, he mentioned that character and competitiveness are high on his list of attributes that draftees must have. If that holds true as a head recruiter we should expect an influx of quality kids come the draft.

Look at West Coast already turning it on. They started the rebuild with zero currency and trade in value like with have with some of our players. Let’s bottom out for 3 years please.
It's a bit similar really. They won in 2018, traded Kelly in, and by 2022 they were rock bottom due to injuries. 2 years of just their picks and they are coming back up. We have more picks this year. I think it's basically all due to lots of young pkayers coming in at once, needing to get to 50ish games before they can play. Just a shame we haven't got more games into more kids. Those games into Parker and that type were a waste.
