Milk or sugar?

Growing up I used to drink it white with 1. Then this one time on the mine site there was a milk shortage. No milk anywhere so it was either learn to drink it black or go without. I actually started to enjoy it from there. Have slowly eliminated sugar over the last few years as part of a general health improvement strategy.

Stiff Bull coffee promises to ‘save relationships’ by boosting a man’s performance in the bedroom.

TO ALMOST every man on this planet, the promise of a cuppa that helps them improve their performance in the bedroom may seem too good to be true.

Yet it seems there is a new product promising just that.
The Sun reports that Stiff Bull coffee claims to be an all-natural brew that will “save relationships”.

The product contains a blend of tongkat ali, maca root and guarana — ingredients that “have been used for centuries by people in Asia and South America to greatly improve sexual health, libido and overall wellness”.

Furthermore, the Stiff Bull website claims these ingredients “produces an awesome effect that can last up to two to three days”.

The potential for pranking your mates is enormous.

But there is a catch — a potentially dangerous catch.
Health experts have warned the coffee contains undeclared ingredients, which when mixed with other drugs can cause serious health problems, including heart disease which increases the risk of heart attack.

The Food and Drugs Administration in the US is urging men not to buy Stiff Bull Herbal Coffee.

Scientists at the FDA carried out lab tests on the brew and identified it contains desmethyl carbodenafil.
Desmethyl carbodenafil is structurally similar to sildenafil, experts at the FDA point out.

Sildenafil is the active ingredient in Viagra, a drug that is approved to help men suffering erectile dysfunction.
The ingredient is not declared on the packaging, according to the FDA.
In a statement the FDA warned: “This undeclared ingredient may interact with nitrates found in some prescription drugs such as nitroglycerine and may lower blood pressure to dangerous levels.
“Men with diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or heart disease often take nitrates.”

If you buy one, make sure you get good beans and make sure you store them well! Grind them the day you use them. I use a metal filter rather than paper in my aero press. Make sure the water has a minute or two to sit after boiling and stir the grinds before pushing down on the press.

Also +1 for the zero sugar/ zero milk crew. Double espresso topped up with hot water to the 2/3 mark of a small coffee cup is the only way.

Why metal over paper? Convenience or is it a taste thing?

One of the biggest things I reckon is, once you've determined where you can get quality beans, work out the perfect grind for your machine/plunger/moka pot/aeropress/whatever. This is easier if you buy whole beans and grind them yourself as you can perfect it by the cup, if you buy ground beans it might take a few goes from a particular distributor before you get the perfect grind so buy in small batches until it's sorted.
 
Not in this thread, but some of you may have read posts from me about The Coffee Barun in Adelaide, a suburban cafe around the corner from my house where the owner Mark Barun (hence the naming of the shop) imports and roasts his own beans in small batches.

Well yesterday I bought some he's brought in from Costa Rica, he's named it the "El Conquistador" and my goodness, she's a beauty. It's a reasonably dark roast but not too dark, it's got medium body, medium acidity, not too fruity and a long, smooth finish that lingers, but lingers in a very good way.

An awesome way to start the day. Good coffee makes me happy.
 
calling all stove top espresso users i cant really remember who you were, i think i recall BrunoV is one, any others?

what are your methods for packing the grind? i know everybody has their own unique styles, and its the little differences that can make a huge difference in the end result. its all trial and error til you find you way.

My aunty inexplicably packs her coffee in tight, hammers it in - comes out terrible! i dont think the water can even force its way through there...

My dad spoons it just over level then pats it down.

Personally i like to heap it in until its a high mound, to a point where any more will make it fall over the side, i dont touch it from there, just put the top straight on and let it pack down as i twist it on. i use the heat of the medium sized burner on three quarters power. Seems to come out good, but im not toatally satisfied, am still looking for the golden method.

anyone have one?
 
my barista.. haha thats sound so wanky hipster...

but my barista explained to me, its like sand, go in your kids sandpit, get a seive- pack the sand in tight and pour water on the top... that water will just sit there, it will seep through eventually but not ideal.

next just pour in loose sand... the water just flows through without resistance.

have to find that happy medium where the water finds enough resistance on the way through to pick up enough flavour, the search for perfection continues!
