Research Small questions that don't require a whole thread

I remember watching a game in the mid-2000's with the Bombers playing. I believe it was James Hird taking a set shot from about 50 out. He hit the post, but what made it special was that it didn't just hit the post, he landed it dead on top of the post. It got a good WTF out of the crowd.

I remember it being a night game with Quartermain commentating, which led me to Round 17, 2006, but I can't find the full game footage. I'm sure someone here has a similar memory.

My question is, has any other player in the VFL/AFL managed to land their kick right on the top of the post, and do you have video to back it up?

More a question for our SANFL watchers but is there a note that Dick Russell coached Port Adelaide for X games while Fos Williams was at a State training/Carnival?

View attachment 1689701

I think in this instance the story refers to a normal training night, rather than Russell coaching on match day. SA played Victoria in Adelaide that year so there were no SANFL matches played on same day as the state game.

Undoubtedly in other years when SA travelled away and SANFL games were played on same day, a "caretaker" coach was in that role and more research would probably lead to career figures needing to be amended.

I have a question (that probably doesn't require a whole thread of its own):

When did the player positions become formalised (back pocket, back flank etc) and did the terminology evolve from early days to the more stabilised form of the game by the time of the VFL -to early 1920's.

(I would also note, that the current usage of the term 'Substitute' in the modern game is an affront. Such a player is a Reserve and should be referred to as such. :))

Here's one I came across today when thumbing through the latest AFL Season Guide.

The 1935–36 NTFL Grand Final is missing its score. No one seems to have it: neither the league or the premier club (Buffaloes). All that is known is that Buffaloes defeated Wallabies by 13 points. The match report, oddly enough, omits any final scores, goal kickers or best players. I wonder if the lack of importance placed on the match has anything to do with the fact that the Grand Final itself was delayed by a week because a swathe of players were going to be away for the Easter weekend. It all seemed a bit drawn out by the end of it.

Any possible leads to find this long-held mystery? All I could think of would be annual reports from the league, but I'm tipping they are lost to the sands of time.

Could try the papers, but yeah, all I have is the semi final scores

That year (1935) Waratahs and Garrison (Army) left the league
and formed their own (Whites only) .

Football wasn't at a high point

If the information isn't in the Standard then it probably hasnt survived

There was no programs or other news organisations

The only hope is someone might have wrote it down on a chip packet

If your interested in the subject this is a good primer:

My question is
Has there ever been any two teams drawing their home and away games in a season?
For information Collingullie Glenfield Park FNC had a draw at home in Rd 9 and yesterday only went down by 2 points in the last home and away game of the season in Riverina Football Netball League

I can come up with two consecutive draws between two clubs in a season.

In the Nannup Football Association (WA) in 1929, the three clubs played each other four times in the home and away season. Barlee Brook defeated Nannup Brook by three points in their first meeting before honours were shared on the next two occasions. Nannup Brook won the last meeting by an unknown margin in a match that determined who would play Nannup in the Final.

Had Barlee Brook scored one more point in either of the two draws, they would have prevented Nannup Brook from winning the premiership.

May 19 Nannup def Barlee Brook
May 26 Barlee Brook def Nannup Brook – 3pts
June 2 Nannup Brook def Nannup – 5 pts
June 16 Nannup (84) def Barlee Brook (68)
June 23 Barlee Brook drew Nannup Brook
June 30 Nannup def Nannup Brook – 1pt
July 7 Nannup drew Barlee Brook
July 28 Barlee Brook def Nannup - 1pt
August 4 Nannup Brook drew Barlee Brook
August 11 Nannup Brook def Nannup
August 25 Nannup Brook def Barlee Brook
September 8 Nannup 12.9.81 def Nannup Brook 8.13.61

Final
September 15 Nannup Brook def Nannup – 12pt

West Coburg played the entire Essendon DFL Division 1 home and away season with a perfect 18-0 record. They then got belted by Deer Park in the Grand Final by 96 points AND got in the news for further wrong reasons thanks to Jordan Gloury's cowardly right hook.

Has there ever been a more humiliating defeat margin-wise in a Grand Final by a team who had a perfect H&A record (West Coburg wasn't perfect before the Grand Final since Deer Park had already thrashed them by 70 points in the semi final), or perfect record into Grand Final day?

Does anyone have any info on what this badge is from? The guernsey it's on is from the mid/late 80s and seems to be VFL related

Is there a regularly updated site that lists round-by-round tribunal/match review panel results? I've got the historical ones but it's slow work making sure the modern lists are up to date when MRP decisions are spread out across multiple posts on the AFL website.

I've also asked the AFL historians if there's any source for Reserves and Under 19s tribunal results in their archives. Can't even get the goalkickers for most of the early years of these competitions so I doubt it but worth asking!

Hi. Growing up in Sydney, I've mainly followed Rugby League. I did watch the VFL/AFL when I was younger, from about the mid 80's, but never very closely.

Recently, Youtube recommended me some AFL videos, and eventually the algorithm recommended to me this video:

When presenting the history, Footy A2Z detailed how there was a no compete between the VFL and SANFL. And it was an "issue" that had never even occurred to me before.

Then this video:

mentioned that South Melbourne had played games in Sydney for some years before the relocation. And further, that as early as.. I think it was 1903, the VFL held games in Sydney... and of course understanding that there was no strong Aussie Rules league in NSW that they would have to have a "no compete" with, the idea of the VFL and SANFL playing games away from their home state, piqued my interest.

I found the Australian Football website with it's historical records, and searching accordingly, I understand:
  • that the VFL never held a game in any other state than NSW before the Swans relocation. I'd be happy to be corrected.
  • curiously, the SANFL did hold games in Victoria.. but I think only a few, and minor grounds. I didn't record these findings.

But... the one that I want to ask about is a game taken by the SANFL to Melbourne, post the Swans relocation. I can't give a direct link, but the records suggest this 19-Jun1999 Central District vs. Norwood was played at Flemington, VIC:

This is recent enough that it might be in some of the forum members memory. I'd like to ask... was this a big deal at the time? What was the motivation behind it? Why does it stand out as the only such fixture, and that they didn't carry it on. Surely the AFL wasn't worried about SANFL fixtures, given their product was now consumable near weekly in Adelaide.

Oh, and for those that aren't familiar with Rugby League, you might be interested to know that in a similar "no compete" situation, this team:

was entered into the 1988 NSW Rugby League season, along with the Brisbane Broncos, but was a fudge around a exclusivity commitment to the Broncos:

Due to a clause in Brisbane's licence, only one team (the Broncos) could play in South-East Queensland. As a result, the Giants played out of the now demolished Seagulls Stadium in Tweed Heads, New South Wales, just over the border, which was home to the Tweed Heads Seagulls RLFC.

I've decided to collate what I've found by navigating australianfootball.com. Great website. Would be good if it added a "State" filter for Ground, including a negation (so Vic, and "Not Vic").

In anycase, I make 1981 the final season, as after 1982, though the Swans were permanently in NSW, it would make sense for the VFL to be more adventurous. I also don't know when the "no compete" with the SANFL ceased formally... I guess even with the addition of the Crows, it made no sense for non-SA VFL teams to take a home game to SA, regardless of "no compete". I guess the point is moot.

I believe this is the exhaustive list for the VFL:

So Round 8, 1952 had all 6 games away from Melbourne... and as I wrote this, it occurred to me that that might have been to do with the Olympics??? I haven't checked, but I'm guessing that was the year, and some ceremony (opening? closing?) was on that weekend:

https://www.australianfootball.com/...eague/138/premiership+season/1/1/1952#round-8

For SANFL... I think before 1981, there were no games outside SA. I found one, but I contacted the site owner to double check, because it looks like a data entry error where the match was played at Richmod Paddocks, VIC, for West Adelaide, who have only ever played home games at Richmond Oval, SA.

Edit.. there was a game at the SCG in 1953. I forgot about that one. The season after the VFL played round 8, which I now understand was a one-off Queens Birthday attempt at promoting the game. It frames the VFL as pretty much staying at home except for going to Sydney for games early (1903-1904) and then just before the South Melbourne relocation (1979-1981).

Other than that Flemington game I mentioned in the original post, there was a match played at Bunburry in WA:

So ostensibly, given it's likely there was never a game taken to Richmond Paddocks VIC, the SCG game was the only SANFL game played outside SA before the AFL era. Accordingly, I found this article detailing the game. Note the language indicating competitiveness with the VFL:

Most records for Charlie Taylor (ex-Melbourne, Carlton, St Kilda) show his date of death as 25/08/1960

This says 'circa 26 August' and I can't see an exact date on BDM (full name Charles Joseph Amphlett Taylor) so just wondering if anyone can confirm the official date of record is 25/08?

His funeral was on 26 August.

He should have been 81 if this DOB is correct:

His birth was registered early in 1879, so that would be okay for a December 1878 DOB:

^ It's rather strange that the probate records have this!:

So perhaps it's meant to be the 25th after all that!!

Thanks for looking this up - it certainly rules out the 26th but now there's questions of whether it should be the 23rd! I'll go with the original for now with a footnote.

Yeah, I'd imagine that the probate records should have it right, but it is a bit annoying! They got his age wrong in the death notice, and maybe they somehow got the DOD wrong as well!

This covers VFL/AFL venues very well: AFL Tables - All Venues

There was a game at the Gabba in 1981:

The Olympics were held in Melbourne in 1956. While it wasn't it's official name, they played the 'propaganda round' in 1952: Australian Football - The propaganda round - June 14-16, 1952

While I don't follow the SANFL very much these days, I absolutely doubt they would have played a game at Flemington in 1999, and suspect the same regarding a game at Bunbury. Most likely there was a 'glitch' or two on that otherwise excellent site!
