AFL Autopsy Round 7 - Dogs go woof

Very lucky the Dogs were either not good enough to go for the jugular or just simply sat in second gear. Margin flattered us.

But it was always going to be tough to back up last years unexpected rise - all we can really do to salvage things is to continue to get games into Reid, Perkins, Durham, Hobbs, Draper, etc and work out who we're keeping, best positions and who to move on. That'll just evolve as the season goes on.

But JFC the hospital passes, opposition waltzing out the forward 50,etc is grim and there's a real Knights-era stench wafting throughout how we look and operate at times...

The cupboard is pretty bare at the moment when it comes to reinforcements, unfortunately we just have to stick it out in the short term.

Time for a drink

drunk GIF
Had plenty through the game and more since, still think todays game was very positive for us.

Ins/Outs next week

Outs
Circle jerk handballing sessions where the opposition can easily close it down and force a turnover.
Close range handballs to team mates who have just taken control of the Titanic 5 seconds before it hits the iceberg.
Not running. No-one is running and the guy who has the kick is going screw it, if no-one is going to lead i'm just going to have to bomb it to a contest.

Ins
Players spreading and making leads
Medium to long vision for spread players
Accurate kicking to medium and long players
Tackle pressure and tackles sticking

The **** is even our objective each week. Our ball movement going forward is just as shit as our defensive set up and efforts.

The players are obviously discouraged from playing with any pace through the midfield. Every possession or mark taken in our defensive half is either fumbled backward, kicked sideways, or booted down the line to a contest despite the fact that we don't have a single campaigner who can mark the ball.

It's as if Rutten and co have instilled the fear of god amongst our fleet-footed midfield to avoid playing a game that suits their strengths. Metres gained each week by Parish and co is abysmal but it comes just as much of a reflection of our slow down the play at all costs game-style as it does their two-way running.

Great play by Draper to ignore handballing to Parish and actually take the game on himself, charge ahead and deliver ball. If your ruckman is doing that to you as a mid it's time to have a look at yourself .

That was not a LACK OF ABILITY - that was a lack of EFFORT and APPLICATION and ACCOUNTABILITY

I saw the Roos get smashed and pumped by 100+ here at the Gabba - then you watch them last night to see the things they've worked on:
1 on 1 ACROSS THE GROUND
Man on man - not everyone chasing the ball with NO ONE on their immediate opponent.
If quick release and go isn't on slowly passing your way (forward, sideways. zig-zag) in transition through Carlton so you DON'T GET BURNT ON THE REBOUND like we did
Win the contest no backward handball either kick or handball sideways/forward into space where you are 1v1
They ran out of petrol halfway through the 3rd quarter that's when the game blew out

YOU CANNOT FAULT NORTH'S LACK OF EFFORT OR APPLICATION - had a fair dinkum crack and kept to their APPLIED set up/structure of play

Our defenders were kicking to packs or outnumbered contests because our mids DIDN'T WORK HARD ENOUGH to present

Our mids were chasing the ball (no accountability) and were ONE WAY RUNNERS

Our forward line structure isn't right as the ball comes out too easily - we need 2 TALLS and either 3 small and a medium or 2 mediums & 2 smalls who can lock the ball in - that's what makes Melbourne good - Brown and McDonald - Fritsch (who plays taller) and Pickett and co

We need to play Stringer, Wright and until Jones is ready try a mobile TALL - Waterman is only good when isolated and isn't a pressure forward - we need smalls/medium who can at least bring the ball to ground and chase, tackle and win the ground ball when it's there

Time to play anyone and drop any senior player not leading by example - the shamble of a CAPTAIN should be in the firing line

As GREAT CAPTAINS do not play 1 great game, a couple of good/very good games and a few ordinary ones in 7 weeks

Hey guys, went to the game and had some notes for you all.

For starters. Draper is ridiculously athletic in the centre, genuinely jumping over everyone for fun. Good tap work.

Nic Martin is a gun. He’s good at everything. Elite cleanliness and skill while being his height aswell.

Durham was impressive and I liked his running and patterns.

Ridley is all class. Can lockdown super well and his ability to read the play. Be super composed and hit targets is ridiculous.

Also thought Reid looked alright for a skinny and slight key defender.

The score did flatter you but you were also inaccurate and didn’t think you were far off them in the first half, a 2nd half to forget.

Sorry to intrude, I come in peace

Where’s Harrison Jones at?

I saw he played VFL 3 weeks ago then hasn’t played at either level the last 2 weeks and is not on the injured list 🤷‍♂️

Some sort of ankle injury that for whatever reason isn't on the official AFL injury list but got mentioned in the club update;

The club will take a cautious approach with young key forward Harrison Jones after he injured his ankle in Essendon VFL’s round four clash with Port Melbourne.

The 21-year-old will unlikely feature at VFL level this week, with Murphy a no-risk approach would be taken with Jones’ rehabilitation.

“'Jonesy’ had a minor ankle sprain to the same side that he’s had the issue with against Port Melbourne,” Murphy said.

“He was a test for last week (VFL Anzac Day game) but he couldn’t quite get up and he’s missed a full week of training (because of it).

“The plan is to now monitor him across this week and he’s probably unlikely to play this week as well.

“We want to take a no-risk approach with young ‘Jonesy’ and make sure we set him up for the back half of this year.”
