So what’s the word with the new clubs, academy programs and all the other colts teams in lower leagues..

Will QAFL colts be effected badly?

Is the academy program a good thing?

Shoulld the best colts ditch academy and just play at their own club and then play seniors..

Talent scouts know who to watch! Even if they are not in the academy lists

Players far better off playing at their club, but nobody at AFLQ or AFL Talent would agree. Even more so for the ones not drafted as opposed to the ones that might get drafted.

1st, i don't think colts are rated as a comp, so much as they are just a well of potential clubs can draw from.

2nd, Academy or club? Which is more important?

Both academy and club can develop players. Both can promote them to higher levels of development; IF they rate you. Both, you only get out of them what you put in.. to a point. Ive no doubt the academies have their favourites. Ive also no doubt they collude with clubs to promote their preferred kids up in club level. IE; Colts into seniors. And particularly WHO they want developed.

If this it true, It seems the 2 academies academies have different philosophies? A look on the weekend at Labrador and Morningside's approach with a trial match; both had similar numbers of u18s boys available who were in Suns (lab) or Lions (morn) academies. Both clubs colts had been u16s premiers the previous 2 years. A pretty equal comparison.

On the day, Morningside promoted none of their Lions academy u18s boys into seniors to look at them.(they did promote 2 the week before) Labrador on the other hand promoted up to 9 of their Suns academy boys on saturday. We are comparing apples to apples. The Lions and Suns boys of both clubs are similar in talent. One club promoted 9 the other none. Labrador promoted 9 had even less reason to do so as their 1sts had recruited well and proved much stronger than Morningside. But the motivation was there.

Was the Suns academy vision a part of this strategy? (Labrador coach was a GC Sun) Is the Lions academy (close links with Morningside) a part of the frugal use of its academy boys to seniors?

At this point im not sure one can separate academy from club concerning identified talent. Ultimately a kid must work with whatever academy his address is in if he hopes to get drafted. One could ignore the academies and just play club, but if one was on the very edge of getting looked at for the draft, would that potentially create a precedent the academies wouldn't like? How might that effect the boys outcome?

I think you would find if you asked the clubs in Brisbane, they don't really hear anything at all from the academy and none of them rate them at developing talent.

Interesting you acknowledge the close links with Morningside though, best unkept secret out there.

I dont think its a secret. or that anyone cares too much. Considering Morningside may have up to 40 kids across all 6-7 age groups in the academy, the Lions wouldn't be doing their jobs if there wasn't some interaction.

Theres just as much of a player carousel at siders, as any other QAFL club. Talent go there for opportunity. Leave for the same reason. They've had some young talent leave over the offseason, probably lose some more before the season begins.

Will be an interesting first round as , I heard over the weekend that there is some sort of academy carnival ? How many clubs will lose players to the camp/carnival . I feel for the boys who will lose their spot the following week

1st round? Only 2 clubs play?

2nd round. SC-WB v BS-DD u17s Saturday 17 April (Maroochydore, 12noon)

National u17s carnival. Gold Coast; Monday 5-Friday 9 July. 5/7-Q v TAS. 8/4 Q v TBC.

All other games look to be on a wednesday. Won't interrupt QAFL too much.

Going to be a very even Comp , but beware of Palmy and Broady as they have a huge amount of academy players, as do surfers and Labrador .. Which is kind of surprising they won, so they must have good depth .. Surfers were winless last season so somethings changed ??

Labrador are the colts to beat. Would have the most Suns academy players, and depth. They also won their u16s comp the last 2 seasons. Other top team would be Morningside. Also a lot of academy boys (Lions) and also won their div1 u16s comp in Bris the last 2 seasons. Last season undefeated.

Mt Gravatt will be strong as always. Probably should have won the u16s comp in 2019, but siders ambushed them at Sherwood in the finals. Played Morningside last year in u16s GF. Not much in it.

Morningside, with players out, have already beaten PBC and BB. (all 3 teams would have had academy boys out). Just a pity it wont be till nearly the last round this season before Tigers and Panthers meet.
