Why would he take a pay cut? He's contracted for another year and would know full well his AFL career will probably be over after that.

He will either stay at Essendon, take the $500K and retire at the end of 2004 or ask to be traded to Carlton (who would only take him for nothing) to get at least some of his salary off Essendons books.

If he went to Carlton, at least he might extend his career by a year or two.
