Pretty funny stuff in a meaningless game at the very end of the NBA season. The most delicious spot-fixing ever undertaken.

What was the rationale behind this? Certainly looks a bit different to "if the Lions get past 70 everyone gets a free big mac on Monday"!

If an opposition player missed all their free throws on a foul, they got free chicken. Probably related to the idea that crowds can put off free throw shooters with their noise, etc - no idea if that's actually true statistically.

This. So the Rockets were the away team and Chick-Fil-A had a promotion that if any opposition player missed both of their free-throws, the Clippers crowd would get some free chicken, so Boban decided to help the crowd out by accidentally-on-purpose missing his second free-throw after he missed his first.

Last game of the season. Neither team could change their table position, so no effect on playoffs or draft positions. As dead as a dead rubber could be. The only people who might conceivably have been upset were gamblers betting in the points market. But he got it close enough to say he was actually trying to make the shot.
 
You just don't see this sort of commentary from clubs in the AFL
