AFL great Carl Ditterich has been charged with several child sex offences following an investigation into an alleged incident in 1985.

Club Statement:

St Kilda Football Club is aware of historical charges laid against Carl Ditterich relating to an alleged incident after his playing career. As the matter is currently before the courts, the club will not provide further comment.

Footy legend Carl Ditterich has been charged with historic child sex offences.

The 78-year-old former St Kilda and Melbourne Football Club player is facing multiple charges including three counts of indecent assault and one count of gross indecency in the presence of a child under the age of 16.

It’s alleged Mr Ditterich assaulted the child in Heatherton, south-east of Melbourne, in 1985.

At this time, Mr Ditterich had recently finished his professional sporting career and was aged in his early 40s.

The charges were laid against the footy great by the Bayside Sexual Offences and Child-abuse Investigation Team (SOCIT) last Friday.
 
Did the Royal Commission look much into VFL and similar high profile sports?

The common theme in all of those was the abuse of power - VFL players were often hed in higher regard than perhaps they should simply because they were footy players. Meant they probably got away with a bit.

This, the Footscray stuff, the allegations from the indigenous player at Geelong - it's probably all tip of the iceberg stuff I fear.
 
After his playing days - sounds like it might have been ‘closer to home’.

This particular allegation occured in 1985, several years after he'd finished in the VFL. But yes, it seems clear that there were insufficient checks and balances in place to prevent this type of thing occurring within football clubs including by players (eg the Geelong, Barry Cable allegations) and officials.

Channel 7 grubby as always did a report from outside the club. It's got nothing to do with the Club, the vultures should piss off.

He was a pretty high profile Saints figure in his day.

Would be the same treatment for any club - the story is that he used to play footy, otherwise it’s not on the news is it?

Regrettably for your club - Ditterich has always been seen as a Saints player, 1st and foremost. Like Stewart.

And I’m betting he’d rock a Saints scarf if he had a higher profile - like Barrassi did with Melbourne.
