Seriously, who has eyesight so good that they need a format that gives better detail than DVD? And so much better that it's worth the hundreds of dollars for the new player and replacement of existing movie collection?

I can't help thinking the electronics and movie companies noticed how much money was in the world and just decided to prey on us.

Or am I totally missing something and destined to live a life unfulfilled until the joy that is Blu Ray enters my living room?

Just invest in a PS3 if you are worried about cost effectiveness. $700 for the best video game console on the market and blu-ray built in.

Anyway, visual clarity and disc space is infinitely higher than dvd. Not to mention that blu-ray players are backwards compatible with dvd and also vastly improve the quality of your existing collection through upscaling so, if you are a guy like me with 500+ discs there is no fear in your dvds being rendered useless. Don't be afraid of the new beast. It ain't going anywhere.

Oh, and the discs can't be scratched.

Oh, and the discs can't be scratched.

That's a lotta pr0n!

Oh, and the discs can't be scratched.

You had me at scratched.

My discs at home are ridiculously scratched (nothing to do with me leaving them out of their cases and lying around in random places- nah) and this is a high selling point to me.

Ok, that's the first thing I've seen that actually means something positive.

Upscaled? Visual clarity? Maybe I've got bad eyesight, but I don't have any dvds where I think "gee I wish this scene was more visually clear"

However, having thrown out about 7 kids DVDs recently due to highly detailed engraving work being etched into their surface, unscratchability is a definite plus. :thumbsu:

Scratched was the last word of his post.

Oh yeah, I see what you did. Me too!

Yep, with all due respect to the filth, the other points prior to that were just a 'meh' to me, but no scratches? That's pure hotness.

hehe...
still enjoy transferring/editing episodes of rage from video to dvd, not sure if i would appreciate songs more with the picture having more/less dots.

Really is business making way too many formats available for ah...business, i suppose competition and more choice makes it more affordable.

I bought a PS3 + 50inch plasma... the difference is remarkable. I've only got Blood Diamond and Transformers on Blu-Ray but dawwwwmn... they look awesome

I love the picture and sound quality of Blu Ray, as it helps me feel better having spent $10k approx on a 60inch HD Plasma 1080p earlier this year!

If you have the top of the line equipment to support the Blu Ray (1080 tv, HDMI cable, Optic Audio cables, 7.1 Amp Surround Sound system etc) it's an amazing leap in the visual and audio experience and, as Filth said, it gets the best out of DVD's as well.

Now it's won the war with HDD, the number of movies and programs available will grow rapidly. BRING 'EM ONNNNNNNNN!

For those not too fussed about the potential better picture, really, it has to be seen to be believed. Crystal clear.

Think how you felt when you first saw DVD compared to VHS.

And then dumb it down just a shade.

It's beautiful. Really.

When at Burswood watching the big screen at the casino, whether its a movie/footy whatever, hard to notice the difference. No real point imo.

That's the screen, which is probably a standard def plasma, or maybe it is a HD plasma, but it doesn't sound like you're watching a BLU RAY standard picture, which is the whole point of this thread. You're just watching a big telly.

It's really about preference. The bluray discs played at the casino really dont show much difference to standard dvd. Just like some people will say mp3 is better or worse sound than cd, its depends on what your listening/watching. Its just compressed to fit more data/dots/pics/music and so on. No real point unless you just want to keep up with technology, fair enough, but unnecessary for the little difference it makes.

whats the availability of good pr0n in blu Ray and will my DVD pr0n play on a bLu Ray player. Ive still got pr0n on video and even super 8. Can I transfer this at a cost effective price to Blu Ray
I would say yes, your blu movies are able to be recorded to bluray so you can see that extra freckle.

So that would make it a Triple Penetration scene? Nice ;)

Back on topic. I have Apocalypto on DVD and Blu Ray. One day I was having this exact same discussion with a mate/sceptic so I put both on simultaniously and kept swapping between the bluray copy and dvd copy during the same scene.

For the record the dvd is hooked up to the plasma via component, the bluray normally via HDMI. For this experiment though I used component from bluray to the plasma. Both are using optical for sound as my amp doesn't have HDMI inputs.

Long story short is that the picture quality difference was extremely noticable when done side by side. The sound on bluray is also much crisper. My mate was so convinced he has since upgraded to 1080p and bluray as a result:)

Anyone here own a PS3 and has not yet purchased HDMI cords?

Makes a helluva difference.

There is a profound difference between Blu-ray and DVD quality. We can go into the specific details, but it really just needs to be seen to fully appreciate. You could be perfectly happy with DVD's, but that doesn't change the fact that Blu-ray really is next generation stuff. I've been working with Warner Home Video on some projects and they are fully backing blu-ray for their future releases.

PM me if you can get freebies.

Ah, thats the other thing. No region coding on Blu-Ray IIRC.

Unfortunately my filthy friend there is region coding for bluray movies.

The PS3 games are not region locked so you can safely buy from wherever and have it play on your Aussie PS3.

To further confuse the matter you will find there are region free movies out on bluray (Bladerunner 4 disc edition is one off the top of my head) but the large majority are locked. There are various websites available that outline what movies are region free etc.

Just bought a Sony Blu-Ray player for under $400 as I had to take the PS3 into the office. My family can't tell the difference between DVD and Blu-Ray (heathens) but I am constantly stunned. And I am only running a 1080i plasma... none of this 1080p 60 inch that Twinkletoes is boasting about. I am friggin' jealous, dude.
