Australia Test squad: Pat Cummins (c), Ashton Agar, Scott Boland, Alex Carey, Cameron Green, Marcus Harris, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Marsh, Michael Neser, Steve Smith (vc), Mitchell Starc, Mitchell Swepson, David Warner

Notable absentees:
  • Jhye Richardson - sounds like injuries, or injury concerns have ruled him out. Wonder if would have got a gig if Boland hadn't excelled in his chance.
  • Tim Paine - would have been an easy way to bring him back with an overseas tour if they wanted to. Seems like they've moved on.

I think they have got it right.Well done selectors. As for the starting 11 I am sure there will be plenty of debate amongst us and hopefully there is a couple of matches before the 1st test which will help the selectors select the side.

Not injuries for Jhye this was brought up couple of weeks back that he will be missing the pakistan tour....to concentrate on short ball format and maybe consider a county team in our offseason to prepare for England 2023

I like the idea of Jhye playing for a county side before the england tour

warner, khawaja, labuschagne, smith, head, green (harris, marsh)
carey (inglis)
lyon (swepson, agar)
cummins, hazlewood, starc (boland, neser)

no real surprises there i guess.

no need for a 6th quick in jhye - he may get a chance on the other tours.

would've liked to have seen pucovski in ahead of harris, but i guess he hasn't done the work and doesn't need to be rushed back.

At this stage with Pucovski I would let him play out the rest of the shield season and then we seriously consider him for the tests next summer.

What’s Marsh done to warrant a recall?

No red ball cricket form to judge him on for a long time which is not his fault.Has been excellent in white ball cricket and I suppose we need a all rounder in case Green is injured. They should have him playing in the next shield game like Head has done but not going to happen and playing in the T20 games against Sri Lanka I think.

It will be very interesting to see what the pitches are like - the stereotype of subcontinental pitches is they'll take spin but there's been plenty of reports and comments around that recent Pakistan pitches have been pace friendly. Would love to see Swepson debut but lets see what they've prepared for us in a month.

As for the squad there are no real surprises. Third spinner was a fairly speculative pick regardless of who it was. I was kinda hoping they pulled a real smokey like Tanveer Sangha... but can totally understand why they didn't. Agar did well in the last Bangladesh tour but that is going back a long while now and he was bowling a lot more at the time compared to now. I know others disagree with this but if Lyon or Swepson get injured I would be very reluctant to pick Agar over a third front line quick - IMO it would have to be an absolute dust bowl that will definitely nullify the pace bowlers.

Would have gone Glenn Maxwell above Mitch Marsh in an 18-man squad, but think they should have taken 19 and gone with both of them. That would give us two different options as the fifth bowler if Cam Green goes down. To do so they both need to spend February playing shield cricket and I think only Marsh is doing so with Maxwell being picked in the white ball internationals (could be wrong here?).

I'm all for leaving Puc to state and grade cricket for at least the remainder of the summer and probably up until the next home series when we can see how he is looking after a few shield games at the start of the summer (CA schedule pending).

As for the first test XI the only questions will be about the bowling make-up... one or two spinners and what's the Scott Boland, Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc pecking order now after Boland's Ashes? If we only have two front line quick bowlers I suspect the left arm variety of Starc will get him the nod over the other two.

There's very little depth for batting all rounders. The options for back up all rounder consist of Marsh, Maxwell (currently no FC cricket since 2019) or Moises Henriques.

Not much depth for specialist batsmen either if we are being honest.

Is Maxwell available? Would think he might be selected for the India tour.

Could be good, as long as he doesn't do a Duanne Olivier and turn into a dobbler.

I know the squad is done alphabetically with the captain first, but I still feel Scotty Boland should be top billing.

Decent squad overall.

Hard to see Boland getting game with Cummins mate Hazelwood fit
His performances have made him almost undroppable, but unfortunately for him he will probably come straight out for Haze. Feel sorry for Neser, looks a long way off now, great depth though.
