English is a Supercoach player's idea of an elite ruckman, much like how Alex Witherden is an elite defender by numbers.

You picked it. His weak points are the ‘ruck’ things that you want big men doing.

Of Ruckmen, per game:

The bad

23rd for clearances
16th for hit outs
11th for tackles

The somewhere in between

7th for contested marks
7th for intercepts
9th for goal assists

The good

6th for goals
5th for disposals
2nd for marks i50
1st for score involvements
1st for marks

Wonder whether we might target Dante Visentini if Bryan completely understandably pursues another opportunity.

Basically kick the can down the road a year or two in terms of timing the development of a young ruckman to coincide with the old man retiring.

I'm in favour of Moyle as a player, but Visentini might be more likely to come for opportunity. Witts doesn't look like slowing down yet but he is 31. Moyle next in line but Read will come on quickly.
Visentini only really has to compete with Jordan Sweet but Soldo has a lot of time on his hands.

If Goldy retires and Bryan goes, Visentini is a clear second ruck 🤓

Moyle I like as a player more but I don't think it's worth it because I doubt he's moveable. Witts is getting on so he's the obvious heir apparent. Visentini it's less clear because they drafted him then decided to trade in multiple established specialist rucks in their 20s afterwards, so clearly they are not 100% sold on him, at least as a primary ruckman.

Losing Bryan is unacceptable for me, If he asked for a trade I'd only consider a top 20 pick, no one will offer that so we hold him to his deal.

The best part about him is his availability, he's durable and is clearly developing.
I think BrunoV touched on this in another thread but he monstered an AFL sized ruck on the weekend. His physicality was something I haven't seen before either.

1. Geordie Payne
2. Jez Maclennan
3. Jack Cleaver
4. James Rowe
5. O.Smart

I think there would be a good chance we go mature aged aswell Considering our ladder position likely to be 2nd. May well be a ruck aswell and wont be a great sign for Bryans future and Drapers injury (B.Teakle)

I would hazard a guess we have the best opportunity to being in a youngster for the future and get ahead of the off season. If we brought in a mature small forward he pushes back on Tex, Davey, Davey and Menzie’s. An Oskar Smartt goes to the back of the queue however.

Can eDPS that Payne’s footskills are below average for a distributing, dashing back men? As powerful as he may be, if his kicking is sub par, you get found out pretty quickly in this game

Payne is a fairly smart player and don’t mind his skills.

I dont think there is going to be such quality at our late pick that they would jump the que of players playing. Would be a play with the focus on this year

Tex is likely stamped, J.Davey needs time, Menzie has fallen off a cliff and could well be done. If we can get more than what Menzie might offer this year then it would be ok depth

Really our pick is just whatevers there, we dont get much choice i wouldnt think

Payne has been pushing fwd and kicking straight, i havnt watched to determine kicking ability

Tex
Baldwin
Hunter
Menzie

all cooked

So are Weid n Shiel but neither have currency
Setterfiekd n Kelly likely keep but don’t mind either way

I’d shop Draper too erratic and a bit injury prone - he’s averaged only 12 games a year in his 5 years at the club we need a more durable ruckman

Our MSD position won’t get us a very good opportunity to pick one of the highly rated younger players unfortunately. I’d be looking at a mature age player to help fill a role or to even help the vfl side, and become depth. McLennan would be playing afl for few sides atm. Kobe Ryan would be my pick but it seems like Adelaide will take him

Would giving one of our better performed VFL players a contract, with a view that it may make our VFL side an attractive destination for fringe talent, be worth it?

Other than Smartt is there anyone on our vfl list worth a shot? If Hately was given a chance and we needed him to come in and play in the forward line like Hobbs has had to, does he have the tank to run out AFL games? I wouldn’t be picking him if 1. He can’t run out games.. 2. He can only play as a full time mid.

I’d rather target a mature aged foot soldier who can run out games and play spots needed. If not I’d go for a project small forward, or a half back who can make the right decisions by foot which is why I like McLennan. Sezkely but it looks like he will go early

What I'm suggesting is there will probably be those types of questions over anyone picked late first round of a mid season draft. So instead of upending someone from the SANFL or wherever, would promoting a guy from the VFL make our VFL side a more attractive destination this off season?

Say we take Hately in the off chance he is required. He probably gets used as a sub anyway. He might not end up being the next Menegola. But next year we might get 2 or 3 guys of that quality come to Essendon VFL as it is seen as a place you can get promoted from?

No I don’t think we should do that

In my opinion I think the spots are to important long term to consider using one with the idea that it could help your VFL program over time
