Its a bit crazy what has went on with the young guys, this along with mountford almost getting delisted feel a bit unhinged to me.

Yet the club is big on larkey, who does not seem like an AFL player at all to me... Sorry to say.

What we saw him do briefly against Adelaide prior to his injury matched exactly the description of him when drafted. Fierce attack on the ball and man at speed. Unfortunately he has to remain injury free to take this opportunity he's been afforded. He wouldn't be offered this opportunity if we didn't see something in him.

Was Mountford really almost delisted? I thought the delay with re-signing him was because of discussion about length of contract and remuneration, rather than whether he would be delisted or not

Going a bit early on a 198cm 19yo. He wasn't ready to perform this year but averaged 2.1 goals a game in the VFL.

Show's some smarts in the VFL but nowhere near a sure thing. Should never have played seniors this year and that was obvious from a long way out.

Was a Jack Watts style of debut in him walking away with almost nothing to hang his hat on.

That said, I always look back to Scott Welsh whose 1st 2 games were over 2 seasons and showed absolutely zilch indication of the gun he'd become in a premiership year.

No, he wasn't. It's people picking up on some speculation by a Freo supporter.

Having said that, his re-signing doesn't appear to have been as well handled as it could have been.

I watched every VFL game he played....the guy is a smart footballer and is one of those guys that just has a knack of kicking goals.

Is confident.

What he did at his age in his first year of VFL was pretty amazing...

When he puts on his size.....look out. I am very confident he will be a player. I reckon he also has a bit of niggle in him.

And this judgment call is based on what?

Your expertise in assessing the capabilities, drive and determination of young talent???

What I saw him produce in one televised game against Sandringham was enough to convince me. Straight from school to that? Incredibly promising.

So I've been told it was an attitude issue with Wagner. He has no guarantees that he will get re-rookied as its dependent on who is available in the rookie draft. We are keeping our options quite open thus we haven't made a commitment. GC have spoken to him about a possibly rookie list spot.

With a wang like that, I'd have an attitude problem too

Actually some freo supporter has nothing to do with it... His own comments to OUR media guys.

Known for his work ethic and hard-nosed attitude, the pacey youngster had a wake-up call following the 2017 season when a contract extension wasn’t forthcoming, like he had perhaps anticipated.

“I was a little bit surprised because I was working as hard as I could,” he admitted.

“I didn’t have much control over the situation. I was waiting on the club to see if they wanted to extend me or not, so I just kept concentrating on all things that I could keep improving on. I was keeping fit, I got a little bit stronger and did all the little things that count.”

Mountford headed home to the family farm in Albany, Western Australia, to clear his head, all the while maintaining a positive frame of mind and strong body.

“That was one thing I knew; I could always hold my head high knowing I was doing the work. If I had have been given the chop, I knew I did everything I could have in order to get another deal,” he said.

“The people around me said I just had to keep working as hard as I possibly could and keep improving every year … there’s really not much else you can do.

“I had my head down all year, not screwed up or done [sic] nothing wrong but obviously it is a good reminder that your career can go quick.”

Mountford said the reality of his situation hit home the hardest when Corey Wagner was delisted.

“Two years has flown by for me now and seeing first-hand what happened to Corey, who is probably one of my best mates here, you see how quickly it can happen and turn for the worse and not through anything other than the club changing its approach or direction.

“When I went back to WA, I spent a bit of time on the farm and had a bit of time up in Perth with my sisters and friends and tried to keep things pretty normal.

“I was just hoping that it would play out in my favour and it did. The club was good enough to give me another year.”
