Thing with standalone is we wouldn't have Dev Squad to drop players to, so no pressure from underneath to keep them on their toes

Wow @ the Doggies standing alone next year.

All these teams are gonna dilute the 'quality' of the VFL.

I too think a standalone at this stage is not a necessity, very happy with Sandringham, but hopefully the issues get ironed out between the parties. Certainly does look like we've gone back on what we've previously said.

Good luck to them if they can make it work, but as was raised earlier they'll have to put the coaches in place and scramble around to find players (not on their list) to fill the team. If they don't find good players, noting a number of players left the VFL this year for better money as the gun player elsewhere, I'm not sure how this helps their development.

Whilst the recruitment of Dowler impacts on our ability to develop another fullback, he's been in the best players quite a few times. Ditto Cook and Cockie in the midfield (Curren maybe hasn't had as much opportunity as he might). And it shows the level of intensity that needs to be brought to the VFL each week (as it was with Magner last year) as they strive to get back on an AFL list.

Going it alone against Geelong, Collingwood and Essendon's resources would be a big risk for mine. They will have the money for a deeper support structure and much better top-up players.

The balance is good terms of overall Saints-listed players and Zeb talent, but with Winmar/Shenton/Crocker/Lever/Staley vs Waller/Coleman/Lourey/Irving/Stapleton/Michaeliades we've made some blues from week to week.

Probably didn't help his footy career, but I know when Russ Gabriel was running out of money, he quit the VFL to play for Doveton for a year, on the proviso that they organised him an apprenticeship. It can be pretty hard to make ends meet for some of they blokes that are on the cusp.

its ridiculous to have so many byes.
That does not help the afl players!

why didn't they start the competition 3 games later. or play each other more then twice!

Its a wonder that the afl clubs are not fighting to going back to having hteir own reserve teams like they used to and playing each week.

The Foxtel Cup was an interesting idea (where the top sides from the respective leagues play each other). A state carnival doesn't work - can only play the one game (as we did against Tassie).

There was an article about it:

http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/revamp-for-national-cup-20120625-20yje.html

The AFL will radically redesign next year's Foxtel Cup.
Carlton is understood to have led the charge against the televised competition after disruption to its VFL team and raised the issue at the most recent meeting of chief executives with the AFL. The configuration of the VFL competition combined with state league games and the Foxtel Cup saw the Northern Blues have four byes in their first nine weeks.
While the AFL has resisted pushes to abandon the competition - it has a contract with Foxtel for second-tier content for the remainder of the broadcast deal - the cup could be moved to a Tuesday night prime-time spot next season on Fox Footy.
AFL executive Simon Lethlean said the Foxtel Cup could also be halved with the 16-team competition cut to eight teams. This would mean two, not three, VFL teams would contest the Foxtel Cup in 2013 along with two each from the SANFL and the WAFL, along with one entry apiece from Tasmania and the North East AFL competition, which includes teams from NSW, Queensland and the Northern Territory.''We understand there's some concern around the byes,'' said Lethlean, ''but whether there's a Foxtel Cup or not, that problem will still exist because the VFL is an 18-week competition compared with 22 rounds in the AFL. We think it's a great competition to get exposure for the lower leagues.''
The clubs and football's various state bodies have also voiced their concern at the uneven nature of the competition - Queensland's Mount Gravatt struggled to score in the first half of a recent clash - and the two best teams in the SANFL, Central Districts and Woodville West Torrens, do not compete in the cup.
The plethora of byes has seen Victorian AFL clubs frustrated over managing players. Carlton was forced to promote Robbie Warnock immediately back into the senior team in a bid to get him a game and some match fitness.
The VFL ... could also have a name change.

That will be 6 games in 10 weeks.

Actually just got reminded that Staley is suspended. Stupid byes make it week longer!

Seb Ross been sore since last game so having week off.

Don't get it. So they name Waller, Sands, Stapleton, Mavric, and Hallahan in both teams - but Newnes, Shenton, and Webster aren't (so they form 3 of the 4 bench players along with Williams as the 23rd player)?

So the 5 guys can play for one spot? Again, picking Shenton (who had had 6 games under 10 possessions this year) in front of Hallahan (who hasn't had any games under 10 and has averaged 14 along with 5 marks and 2 tackles) doesn't seem to be helpful to the alignment. And Webster had 3 possessions last week!!!

Very string breeze to Sautner goal end today. Dev squad smashing Franga by 97 nearing full time.

Beau Wilkes playing today.

First goal to Franga after bad kick-in by Raph, and a spoiling error by the tall defenders (leaving a player down to pop it through from 10m).

Nearly another one as Dowler isn't able to stop his opponent leading onto a mark at 40m (just missed the set shot).

Nice pack grab from Beau at 60 - handballs off to Michaliadis who is dumped after kicking. Downfield free and goal to Cook.

Curren roves well but misses with the left foot snap.

Great kick (think Rigga) to Shepp who kicks to the hot spot. Wilkes contests well and Peake roves for a goal.

Nice contested mark at CHB after Raph outpositions his opponent.

Curren passes to Archer who marks well. Tight angle into the wind (worth 4 goals at least) and he misses.

Lairy struggling a bit (in the long sleeves today). Just got caught running way too far without bouncing.

Brilliant tackling gives Cockie a shot from 45m, but it veers off with the wind for a point.

Nice work from Curren to get it to Wilkes, who kicks poorly into F50. Franga butcher it and hand it to Rigga (who seemed surprised and dropped a perfect opportunity to kick one).

Good quarter though. 2.4 (16) to 1.2 (8)

Ledge has been quiet. Markworth a few good touches. Jacko has had the better of Khan several times. Curren prominent.

Winmar has had the late call-up and had 5-6 possessions. Shenton is playing OK in defence.

Long ball to Wilkes. Gets a piece but can't hang on and it runs over for a point.

Nice scrambling by Cook and he snaps a goal from 15m.

Franga have had the run of play for a number of minutes but keep missing. Ledger still quiet and now Sippa is jogging around without a lot of intensity.

Pass by Curren gets to Cockie who misses without much pressure on the run.

Ledger pumps it to the top of the square but Wilkes is spoiled for a point. Kick-in error sees Winmar get on the end of a handball for a goal from 30m on the run. Had a dozen possessions so far.

Archer marks and kicks to the square. Wilkes again spoiled for a point.

Sikora easily palms down against Khan to Markworth who snaps 30m and Wilkes takes a nice mark. Allows too much for the wind and misses.

Nice grab by Shenton from the kick in. Passes to Cripps well within range, but he plays on and ***** it up.

Milera gets a shot from 50 but misses everything. From the boundary throw-in Rigga gets on the end of good scrambling and goals from 10m.

Shepp beats Khan at the next bounce and palms it down. Kick ends with Cook who misses.

Jacko marks the kick-in and it ends with Lairy - whose shot from 50m falls shot. Good mark by Peake is disallowed due to minimal contact.

Winmar marks well but kicks OOF. Sippa marks the return kick and pops it through from 60m!

6.10 (46) to 1.5 (11) at half time.

The weather has turned very, very ugly during the break. Howling gale force wind and rain. Ta very much.

Thanks for the updates as usual Squizzy. Especially facing the elements.
A lot of talk about Saints recruiting a tall defender - but it sounds like Jacko Ferguson is progressing well.

Raph has a bounce and the ball doesn't come back!

Intercept and nice kick by Rigga finds Arch who splits the middle from 30m.

Shot from Cripps at 50 on the run is just wide.

Too many up to spoil at CHB and Raph's punch is trapped and they kick one.

Shenton is penalised for a throw and then Arch gets too close and concedes 50. Way too technical (as he wasn't affecting play, but it still costs another one).

Nice contest from Arch, and Wilkes pokes it off the ground from 40m and again from 25m and it rolls over for a goal.

Raph drops a mark but they miss the shot.

Peake kicks to himself at the kick-in, but the idiot umpire doesn't think he did a good enough job of it and calls it back. Peakey loses it and spears it to the umpire - who calls a free from the top of the square. Somehow they kick it into the mark!

Khan marks well against Dowler but hits the post from 45. The umpire (what a turd) stares at the line to see if they can penalise Peake again! Impartial my arse.

Great kick by Lairy to Rigga, but he misses Cook on his own 25m out. Markworth marks the ball coming out but misses from 40m from a tough spot.

Good play by Cook and gets it to Cripps who misses without a lot of pressure.

Cripps gets another shot after Wilkes is smashed in the head in a marking contest. Misses again with a snap.

Cook again. Nice to Milera who sprints to 60m and misses (good attempt but the wind is horrendous).

Franga making little effort to win this.

8.15 (63) to 3.12 (30) at the final change.

"That was padding your stats up and it was just shit footy. Stop ****ing doing it"

"if your tired how the **** do you think they feel? It's not rocket science. If your tired they are ****in tired aswell"

- Simon McPhee #qualityspray

Jacko tries to take on a tackle when he had a handball option. The turnover costs a goal.

Bad error by Shenton to bounce, put himself under pressure and then handball to Raph under even more pressuree. Only a point this time.

Curren fumbles off the pack and can only manage a point.

Jacko does well off the kick-in and gives to Cockie who kicks well to the top of the square. Wilkes flies and takes the contested mark and kicks the goal.

Rigga has a shot from 40m but the ball goes sideways and almost backwards!

Wilkes busts a big pack, and Cook roves for a goal.

Sikora palms down to Lairy who goes the barrel from 55m and hits the post.

Cripps to Rigga on the wing. Great pass to Lairy who runs 25m and puts it through on an angle.

Curren is penalised for holding (had no chance). Costs a goal.

Nice pass Sippa to Cripps at 35m. He judges the wind this time!

Final score 11.17 (89) to 5.16 (46).
