Oliver Florent
Young speedster Oliver Florent has become a crucial element of coach John Longmire’s team since the Sydney Swans secured him with their first selection at the 2016 AFL Draft. The Victorian has shown glimpses of exhilarating footy on a wing, most memorably when he jagged a runaway goal in Round 4, 2018 to seal a gripping victory for the Swans over the Bulldogs. But Florent, who’s also spent time on the inside of the contest, is determined to continue to grow his game as a hybrid midfielder in 2020.

Oliver Florent
DOB: 22 July 1998
DEBUT: 2017
DRAFT: #11, 2016 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Beaumaris (Vic)/Mentone Grammar (Vic)/Sandringham U18

Can somebody please give Mr Florent a pen?

Has been in the news during the week he is expected to sign a new extension.

Florent has been exceptional for us this year, must be one of the first names picked these days

yes, definitely ... like heeney, rowbottom and mcinerney, he's playing with more confidence, more assurance ...
and his attacking flair is coming more to the fore, he's a very creative player ... that sideways pass today, i think to wicks, clever to see it, bold to try it, and he pulled it off without changing stride
hard to believe he still has critics on this board ... he's a class act

Majority of the critics are due to him never becoming a midfielder that many wanted him to be.

You cannot have a team of 22 midfielders, and what Florent is providing is invaluable.

I think he'd stand out and arguably perform better if Blakey wasn't in the team. Anyone playing a rebounding role will seem a bit muted by comparison to that mad lizard cat

Plenty of our best defenders started elsewhere.

Richards, Grundy, Nick Smith (drafted as a mid), Rampe (confident he was a mid), Blakey, Roberts, Cunningham and Jetta all were drafted/ traded in as players who were specialists in different positions.

We definitely have a track record for it.

Not sure about Rampe but almost certain Jetta didn't play in defence until he went to WCE. The others ✅. Lloyd, Fox and McCartin too. Further back to Leo Barry. No doubt others that I've forgotten.

Jetta was playing defence for us in his last few years.

Rampe was playing midfield in the VFL and Sydney leagues before we brought him in and transformed him into a defender.

Forgot about McCartin and Lloyd on that one.

I have thought highly of Ollie and the way he conducts himself from the minute he walked into the club. If any bloke ever had the right to play the go home card it was him, but not once have I ever heard anything even suggesting it

Hope he's a Blood for life!

for sure ... an underrated yet very important player, he and blakey are a very creative combination running out of defence

Think he has gone up a level I didn't think he had, saw him as your solid really good B grader that every team needs. Brilliant evasion skills etc, but so far in 2024 he looks dare I say elite?

Best part is he hasn't dropped off - he usually starts a season on fire then really tapers off. Don't see many goals kicked on him either

Ollie is a worthy addition to that illustrious list. Some may not know of Brian McGowan. Brian was a fine second rover behind Skilts and a more than decent goal sneak in the forward pocket.

Always had the makings of a good player, but two things - being settled in a position over a long period of time, and natural development coming into the peak age of the majority of good players (25-30) - have really helped his cause the last couple of seasons. Reckon he's bulked up a fair bit too, was a bit of a twig for a good while.
