Draft Watcher SMYTHE’s 2023 Draft

Remove this Banner Ad

I don't think it's necessary, I think more people get drafted this year than first thought, but my list is already too long. If I was to do a phantom 3 rounder there would be many I would struggle to make a case for after that. This is just a rankings list (IMO on how their year has gone and where i see them sit) though, not in order of who I think gets drafted. There are some further down the list that i think may get drafted, I may look at doing a large phantom later on.
I would be surprised to see 50 non club tied (academy/father son) selected this year. Looks bereft of depth this year

yeah it will be close to that number, but im also talking about rookie as well as N.D, and although the depth goes, i think the curve does flatten out after around 30 but there are a bunch of good role players without standout traits that every team needs after that point on the boards

Who are the Saints likely to be interested in? with their 1st pick.
Sorry for the late reply but I have been very busy, hence not much action on here.
It's a good question and one that cannot be answered qithout a huge explanation going on forever, or I can give a quick quip.
I think there are a few positions of need so in no particular order here are a few that may be in play around that mark,
Luamon Lual may present a good option as a running halfback with good delivery
Ollie Murphy as a developable kid if he falls that far,
Koltyn Tholstrup is another as an attacking hf/mid with a bit of mongrel,
Joel Freijah as a wingman/mid who can kick goals
Mitch Edward's as a ruck option
Connor OSullivan, similar to Ollie Murphy (in that he may be off the board by then) but he is a very good sized, consistent utility, running through the middle, down back, on the wing, and can go forward.

Kade De La Rue a defender?
I think he goes a bit higher than that and I'd have him as a medium forward with midfield potential?

Word is the max number of selections in the national draft will be 45-55.
I'd be quite happy to take Kade DeLa Rue with the 2nd of Adelaide's 2nd round picks, I really rate him as a forward that has great midfield potential into the future.

Yeah a lot won't get picked just trying to fit in all possible players who could be picked

There ya go lads

Definitely like what I have seen of Connor O'Sullivan.
And we probably need a Luamon Lual type.
How do you rate this draft in comparison to other's. Obviously more tall's than usual.
Thanks for your reply.

Would have just been on scouting notes
thanks for adding your mock draft on my thread, different opinions are welcome. i, personally dont see around twenty names on your list getting drafted at all, and i cannot fathom a draft where Luamon Lual gets picked after 50, he is not one of my personal favourites, but i cant see clubs letting him slide that far unless he is a prick of a human being, like a Karl Malone style prick :tearsofjoy:

I noted at the start of the year that Connor was one of my favorites for this year and he didn't let me down (i knew he wouldn't).
In response to your question on how i rate this year's draft;
It's hard to say.
At this stage, my thoughts are much different to this time last year.
Last year i thought this years crop could be amazing.
Alas, so many kids did not come on or develop further, some went backwards, while less went forwards in their development than i hoped for.
However, there has been a dearth of KPP in recent years and this year tops them.
I think, generally speaking it is a good draft, not overly deep but condensed at the top with high end talent, rounded out with very good role-playing types found in each and every position.
The general top end 'overall' talent is very good, the top 2 or 3 talents could be grouped, then about ten grouped in a tier below, then about 20-30 in the next tier. There are far more 'solid role players' this year than in previous years.
I would predict clubs to try to spend 2nd and third rounders to move out of the draft and into next years, trouble is they have to find a club needing points either this year or next year or find a club with no picks that would like to have some.
I would be surprised if more than 50 were picked this year however i would not be surprised if in ten years' time we are asking how a player got picked in the 40's this year and has gone on to be a very good player, such is the nature of how the draft was looking at this time last year, those who have not come on this year may flourish in a full time professional environment and gold may be found amongst those solid role players i spoke of earlier.

i cannot fathom a draft where Luamon Lual gets picked after 50
Hahaha correct he doesn't. Lual is highly unlikely to get to the bulldogs as he will go before pick 40. The HB's in the pool are all great and all offer something different. I wouldn't put Lual as the quickest HB but he's great as an interceptor and does the little things well. His carnival was good without being great. Philactides is probably the best HB imo. His speed and kicking is what sets him apart and is what most clubs are after. His SA game was elite. The other 3 were ok. Hardeman is a bit like Lual as an interceptor but has some nice speed as well. He had a good carnival considering the team he was in wasn't great. Roberts I'm not a huge fan of but it sounds like he's highly regarded. A bit sluggish imo and gets a lot of stats via the kick or wraps around for a cheapy. B.Wilson I'm not sure of but I have definitely seen him play some real nice games. He's a little hit n miss. I think he played mid last weekend and he seemed to have a decent game by the stats but i can't be sure if he played mid. His carnival was a pass mark but he can definitely play better.

Is there a question mark on Hardeman’s disposal? Seemed pretty unreliable to my eye but I don’t have stats to back that up.
Yes I think there has been but let's be honest I reckon we could say that about most of the draft class. I didn't think it was the highest skill level throughout the carnival. The Allies boys were good, but that's because they played like a team. I think for this group of HB's its speed or intercept that clubs need to choose.
