The RFC official historian is some guy by the name of... Bartlett. Y'know, Bartlett. Son of THAT Bartlett.
No offence but that is a terrible example. He would be getting paid nothing for that gig and the volume of labour he does in recovering source material is incredible.

I think we may be straying away from the original point here: the feeling that there is absolutely no way Xander McGuire would have elbowed his way in to being a regular on the TV screens at 19 or whatever he was, if his dad wasn't Eddie McGuire.

I doubt old Herb was throwing his gold medals around the boardrooms, demanding that Abbey gets a gig. Same with Jack and Sarah Jones. Unlike Xander, they both completed the rather quaint practice of actually finishing a bachelor's degree in journalism or media before they bulldozed their way on to a commercial station.

Then of course there's plum role and fame and fortune that comes with being Official Richmond Football Club historian for Rhett Bartlett. Does he even get paid for that? It's a job that someone who was born into the Richmond Football Club and whose father is royalty there could reasonably be expected to do a better job than the rest of us. Because he'd have the combination of passion and access to the resources and connections that most of us simply don't.

In the context of the sheer number of nepo babies in the AFL media, you can't deny that having Tony Jones as a father isn't a massive leg up.

Sarah Jones got a Channel 7 work experience gig at 17, and a Fox Footy reporter gig at 19 FFS. I do not blame her for walking through an open door, but the door wouldn't be open if her father wasn't a big-name AFL journo.

Yes, they did an undergrad in journalism, but without that family connection, I doubt the vast majority of them get the job they have.

Whoa, wait... her dad is (apparently) named Tony Jones, but he isn't the Channel 9 (or even the ABC) Tony Jones - a quick Google, bringing up a Father's Day social media post from her seems to confirm.

The connection Sarah Jones has is that her grandfather played for Essendon, a very good player, but not exactly John Coleman or Dick Reynolds. Which seems pretty flimsy to me.

I don't really feel the need to defend her, but her career seems to have followed the kind of trajectory you'd expect for someone in her position and the impression I get of it is that people figured it was a good story and a link to her passion for the AFL and Essendon after she had already made her mark. Yeah, someone probably put in a word for her and probably mentioned the connection to her grandfather to get a work experience opportunity, but that's how everyone does their work experience don't they? Someone puts in a word for you and you do a week of filing.

I confess, I have no recollection whatsoever of her being a Fox reporter in her late teens, she's like in her 40s now isn't she?

Oh in that case that's fine. Whoopsamadaisies.

I caved and watched the round so far. As stated earlier needs an ex-player and a journo. Not a young bloke giving soft questions to another non-player to answer. Don't recall the bloke actually making a statement.
Also randomly the show cut to some woman in a pool covered in tatts. No idea what this has to do with the round so far.

A few weeks ago on the Sounding Board Hutchy and Damo were at pains to stress that if you think Xander has his job because of Eddie, you don’t know what you’re talking about.

Give us all a freakin break. Crazy how these guys treat Eddie kind a mafia Don who will seek retribution.

Caro for example straight up admits nepotism is how she started.

Yes, he's there because he's Eddie's son.

Eddie would have had him running around the Nine newsroom doing jobs from probably 14. He also would have been in there refining his presentation and delivery for years before he was live in front of a camera. Big advantage in that respect, and it puts him light years ahead of anyone else his age.

Not the topic but I don’t understand how people actually like Sarah Jones on TV. she brings absolutely nothing to the broadcast. She has this stupid vacant-headed grin on her face the entire time, and her whole job is to just ask the ‘experts’ what their opinion on each topic is. You could train a monkey to do it.

Harsh. She does it well. Her whole job is to steer and enable the experts.

If she gave an opinion, you'd tell her to **** off back to the kitchen.
