Used to be a strong advocate for Christmas parties but to be honest they should do one.

Prior to our Chrissy do, we had what was ostensibly a proto event but with other companies within the field.

A woman who has been in the company for two years got so drunk she was slyly offering a shitty local celebrity, Spicks and Specks sort, cocaine. I was the only one who saw this. kept it to myself. within three hours she was walking around a ball room in no shoes with her dress half way up her body. she'd also set the tone for the teenage intern who was chain pouring wines every time I saw her.

The intern, who was going to be offered a full-time position this month, has now been forced to resign / her parents saw how drunk she was when she got home (she'd spewed in the uber on the way home; which of course the company found out about because they paid for it) and didn't want her in that environment.

The 50-year old woman who threw things around the room and threatened to quit and had a go at the CEO and her immediate boss apparently got a call the next day from the bosses and said she did nothing wrong. in fact, apparently everyone else drove her to getting drunk because she didn't get enough recognition throughout the year.

Spoke to a bloke who worked at a similar organisation and he said this is happening lots now. people can't afford to go to a bar anymore so see the idea of unlimited piss as a bonus win. people lost social skills since covid. whatever.

I am a very heavy drinker and I've done some stupid shit in my life but these humans who sacrifice their job are truly nuts. you lose a reference, no one can afford a month without income with a mortgage/rent...

Truly pathetic behaviour.
harden up son. Nothing wrong with taking a bit of free piss.

I think internal networking is as important as external, plus it's good to show whoever you work for that you've bought in etc. I'm sure I'll be called a bootlicker or whatever but I don't GAF.

Fair enough
I’m in HR so my internal networking happens all year and as for part 2, I think I give more than enough all year, and if not attending a Xmas show means I’m not buying in, I can live with that.

COVID is also a deal breaker for me - we’ve had outbreaks following the Xmas show for the last 3 years so I’d rather pass on that

IT’S A PARTY NOT A SHOW

We had Christmas lunch AT work
In past years "managers" hosted a party which was basically the younger workers being blind drunk and the older workers tut tutting them.

In recent years the younger one's would arrange/host a Christmas party but "unofficial" so as to avoid any legal issues.

I barely attended any as it was the same routine year on year the same people get blind drunk and vomit everywhere.
Dirty co-workers would try to hit on the younger blind drunk ones.

I even stormed out of the Christmas lunch at my work this year as I was not impressed with certain people talking shit about me straight at my face in front of everyone (even though most were oblivious to it). I walked out then I was the "bad guy" for not staying around to eat, I put my foot down and said I'm not associating with a toxic person longer than I should have to and 2) your food selections (finger foods) was deplorable.

Of course someone who works in HR would be worried about covid. in 2024. in the middle of summer.

People who don't go are morons.

Do they think everyone who attends work events really really loves their colleagues? or have no family or friends? or think escape rooms and Smiths chips poured into a bowl is really fun?

ffs of course you'd rather be at home, of course you don't particularly want to spend time with coworkers. but in a lot of environments, it's important to look like you half give a shit. just one of those image things like occasionally staying to 5.30 or getting in half an hour earlier.

Reminds me of coworkers who act like they're the only ones who experience family issues, relationship break downs, financial stress. usually the two massively overlap. had a couple of people rat out of ours because they had to do 'christmas shopping' or 'had a bit on at home.' ffs.

Yeah ours was on the Fri, 7th of Dec at work.

They put on a nice lunch, got food trucks and non alcohol beers, wine, etc

Then went back to work.

Think the days of us going to the pub and getting blind are gone sadly, but understandable.

Some groups at mywork organised their own get togethers but the group I'm in now isn't very tight knit and probably never even stepped foot in a pub

Small office with just the five of us, with only two into drinking (boss and yours truly) means no real Xmas celebration.

Just a few decent lunches in the last two weeks to celebrate.

I mean, we are literally having a COVID spike right now. One of my colleagues couldn’t come to the Xmas party because she had COVID and was feeling very shit. But sure, let’s pretend it ended in 2021.

Our Christmas party always has good food and free flowing beer, plus some entertainment, so I usually make an appearance. Plus, I like a couple of my colleagues.
