Oh believe you me I am perfectly capable of hating arseholes and also thinking this is a shit move from Port, who should have backed their player in 100% rather than telling him he was wrong to go off.
There you go. If you think Port Adelaide haven’t supported their player, then that’s your choice. Luckily for the club and the player, they don’t care a smidge about what you or I think.

I don’t mind that he stated on social media that he hates the club I support. It’s his right to state that. he obviously feels that at some stage in the past his family were harshly dealt with by Hawthorn and there is some discontent there.

Some people may have taken offence, with what he wrote, which is also fine. What isn’t fine is morons using it as an excuse to racially vilify him. Argue with what he wrote What isn’t fine is if he has been stood down by expressing his opinion.

As a player, I loathe him, he is in the same category as Paul Chapman, Cameron Ling and a couple of others. I use the term loathe, as these players always lifted their team when it mattered the most, quite often resulting in a loss for the team I support.

On a side note, hearing Dunstall’s speech, where he made mention of a keg on legs, my first thought went to David Boon, as I always referred to Boon as the Keg on Legs.

A return serve shouldn't include racism though. I feel like online cowards get more of a pass, like "trolls will be trolls" or something when in reality at a minimum they should be banned on the spot from the platform.
I highly doubt it was just a return serve either.

In fact I would be very confident that Riolis rant was triggered in part by him recieving racist taunts from Hawthorn fans on social media due to his double free.

This is Tony Wilson, captain of the 1991 Hawthorn u19s team reflecting on Willie Rioli Jr's dad.

"I was captain, and remember one afternoon at Arden Street, having to ask some of our players to stop racially abusing North Melbourne’s Indigenous players, 'because everything you say to them, you’re saying to Willie too'.

"Willie didn’t play any senior games. Maybe he was too small. More likely he was too early. He was a star when he returned to the friendlier environs of South Fremantle in the WAFL."

I like that he only thought about stopping the abuse his players were dishing out because he had an indigenous player in his side. Without that he'd obviously have been okay with it tho too his credit he seems to have matured and changed his ways. Its worth noting that he thinks Jr's old man was good enough to play seniors but wan't picked because he was "too early" - ie Hawthorn wouldn't pick black players at that point in history.

He also hints at the treatment the older Rioli copped at Hawthorn when he describes "the friendlier environs of South Fremantle". A club with a history of treating indigenous players with some decency.
Please don't listen to this moron's take. My advice ferball is 1) Before you besmirch one of the good guys who is Tony Wilson, read the entire article he wrote https://www.foxsports.com.au/afl/fo...r/news-story/469601cc682a4b7e3e3f64da4091765f. He's very open and balanced on the subject
2) Please dont ever take up teaching or any position of leadership as you have no idea in techniques to communicate effectively with people you may not have anything in common with. I personally thought he handled it beautifully in an age where racism on the footy field was sadly common place.

Hawthorn's racism has nothing to do with Hawthorn?
Stop trolling. I can understand that Oppo supporters think it’s a fun time to lay the boots in to a rival club, but as this goes forward I think you’ll see just how unfunny this situation is for the people involved.

Nah, Collingwood admitted to poor past behaviours and have put measures to be better in place.
Yep, until the next time it happens. I can’t quite believe an Collingwood fan came into this thread thinking they’d cast a few stones at another club for its historical racism. I don’t even need to say anything.

Nice deflect.

How pathetic.

Interested to see if Hawthorn have the backbone to do a “Do Better” report of their own. Highly doubtful from the family club.

You think pointing out clear hypocrisy is pathetic?

I think coming into a thread about a player taking leave due to racist abuse in order to crack a shit joke is more pathetic, actually. You’re gutless.
No not really, what’s pathetic and gutless is that your club continue to let this shit happen, and seemingly look the other way.

Willie has vented his frustrations on social media towards a club he hates, and he has good reason to hate, and then gets racially abused for doing so.

This shit makes my blood boil.

Please tell me specifically how hawthorn can stop some racist moron on instagram from trolling a football player in their DMs. Love to hear it. I’m sure the e-safety commissioner would like to hear it too.

What did he say that warranted anger? Let alone harassment and abuse online? You saying he should shut up because people are going to be being horrible and racist is some real “she shouldn’t have gone out dressed like that” energy. How about putting the responsibility on people who behave like pieces of crap?

So Mitchell, the current players and the majority of rational fans who are denouncing the abuse?

Becuse they are the ones under the pile on.

This current club did nothing here, aside from lose.

How do you know what Port said?

How do you know what support they have and are providing?

You dont and are jumping onto the click bait narrative being driven by the media.....who also dont know.

Not looking great for Hawthorn "the family club" and its relationships with first nations players.

The first part of Willie's post "play with fire you're gonna get burnt" makes a lot more sense as a response to feedback he was already receiving from certain quarters than as an unprompted celebration of kicking an easy goal and then being the beneficiary of an undisciplined free kick.
