Who is the true goat in Tennis ?

Having lived my teens and 20s through the Federer, Nadal and Djokovic years, it's crazy to now see a 20 year old who might just be the most impressive of them all in Alcaraz. No limit to what he can achieve. 20 years old and already number 1 ranking with 2 Grand Slams to his name.

Right now, based on Slams and history, Djokovic.
Time will tell how far Alcaraz goes- injuries could be a limiting factor for him, but it's exciting to see the changing of the guard after we declare Djokovic THE GOAT

It may be a changing of the guard but as it stands its going to be Dkokovic challenging Alcaraz over the next 12-18 months, its daylight after those 2.

I remember hoping Dominic Thiem was to become the next challenger- he was brilliant for a few years until a wrist injury and he now barely makes the top 100. Talent-wise, I think he had what it takes.
Hoping he can rekindle his career- I know it's not appropriate to discuss him amidst this GOAT thread, but just saying...

Funny little piece about the LOAT :) and his dad being his usual self.
(LOAT = Loser Of All Time. He has lost 12 GS finals, the most)

------------------------

The world number two Novak Djokovic’s father has lambasted a journalist who called his son LOAT (Loser of All Time).

The 36-year-old recently suffered a defeat in the final of the third Grand Slam of the year in London to Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz in a five-set thriller with a score of 1–6, 7–6(8–6), 6–1, 3–6, 6–4 on Sunday.

The defeat gave Djokovic an unwarranted record as he became the player who lost the most finals in the Grand Slams (12), overtaking Switzerland’s Roger Federer who was defeated 11 times.

Following that defeat, journalist Nebojsa Sofranac labelled Djokovic as the LOAT, something that clearly made the Serb’s father angry.

"May God help that man. If he can even be helped, and if he really means everything he wrote,” he said.

Despite that result, Djokovic remains the most successful player in the history of men’s singles tennis in the Open era, having won 23 Grand Slam titles.

But that defeat in London surely halted his march towards equaling Federer’s record of eight Wimbledon titles.

Currently, the Belgrade-born is the joint second-most successful player in the competition’s history with seven titles to his name, equal with America’s Pete Sampras.

Well that's that.
By winning the US Open Djokovic has equaled Margaret Court's record. He is now two majors ahead of Nadal and four ahead of Federer.
Djokovic has now won 89 matches at the Australian Open, 92 matches at the French Open, 92 matches at Wimbledon and 89(?) matches now at the US Open. It is looking increasingly likely that he will have 100 wins at every single major.
Will make 400 weeks at no. 1 (hopefully 418 weeks) and almost certainly his 8th year end no. 1.
Perhaps this thread can be re-explored in 10 years time if Alcaraz and others continue to improve.

Djoker has now made 50% of slam finals he has played in and won 33% of every slam he has participated in.

Absolutely insane statistic.

Djokovic clear GOAT for me. Federer/Nadal/Djokovic the clear best trio of any era imo.

Nadal second imo. Federer has had the benefit of winning against lesser opponents earlier in his career before Nadal and Djokovic arrived. Nadal sandwiched between Federer and Djokovic's dominance. But while that's the case, Nadal always had the clay court as his surface and couldn't excel against either Federer or Djokovic on other surfaces. So he's the most specialised of the 3 and will go down as the clay GOAT (if that's a thing).

Not sure how much longer Djokovic has with Alcaraz arriving, but he's done enough to be considered GOAT at this stage. And if he wins another 2-3 titles I think even his detractors will have to question their position. There's only so far the "GOAT is a personal opinion" argument can get you when the stats are stacked in one player's favour.
