Tetris (apple TV)

I purchased and enjoyed the amazing Tetris Forever complimation on Nintendo Switch, so I know the story already but still a pretty enjoyable re-enactment of the story of one of the most important and iconic video/computer games in history

Venom:The Last Dance… started out as hot garbage, info dump right from the beginning, ridiculous premise to propel the story. Middle lacking coherency and full of silly tropes. The end was a bit more exciting and lifted it a little. Has there ever been a more stacked cast in such a bog average film? Tom Hardy, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Stephen Graham, Juno Temple. 5/10.

Aftersun

(Apologies to my letterboxd friends for the copy and paste)

I was one of the people who didn’t “get it” on first watch. I thought it looked gorgeous, but found it meandering. I took it as a slice of life movie, and didn’t fully engage. I completely missed some of the (obvious in retrospect) signs and suggestions from Charlotte Wells to look at what was happening below the surface.

When a friend actually explained the movie to me -

that it is about the father’s suicide and depression, being told from the older Sophie character’s perspective

- I had to watch it again. It all completely unlocked for me the second time.

An incredible movie to think about, read about, revisit, sit with. It’s the kind of film that once you understand it, you pick up so many little things that reward repeat viewings. Loved getting on reddit and reading about all the other things that I had missed (like the meaning of him buying the rug).

The more I think about this film the more I believe it is a masterpiece. The fact that it was too subtle for my simpleton brain the first time only elevates it for me. It’s subtle like the signs of depression from someone trying to hide it from their loved ones. It’s vague and hazy like memory is. A deeply personal and beautifully crafted gem of a movie.

5/5

Hey Sketi maybe it's not you're a simpleton you've just had a good life without depression that you didn't pick it up the first time in the movie!
Unfortunately I don't even have that excuse 🤣 worryingly Paul Mescal's performance seemed too normal to me the first time haha.

The film asks you to draw your own conclusions about that happens afterwards, which is part of its brilliance. The first time I just wasn't making any of those broader connections or picking up the little bits of symbolism etc

I thought it was okay, but primarily worked thanks to Robert Pattinson, who's tremendous in it. I loved the critters too.

The Trump stuff was a bit much, although it's pretty funny that Bong Joon Ho has said it had nothing to do with him.
I'd bet money Ruffalo meant it to be Trump

Though the tanned religious conservative sociopath is a common theme in politics

Another double header tonight starting with

Asteroid City

I had seen the trailers and the reviews in here but had never made the effort to watch it

What can I say - Ive used this phrase before for another movie and I think its apt for this

I'm not sure what I watched but I do know I liked it - its a deep movie with many layers that encompasses all the weird stuff I like

Acting - with so many stars vying for pole position - was a stand out - the colours , the story the setting - everything worked

Though every time I saw the cop car chasing the crooks I saw this

Its very Wes
I enjoyed it
I think Grand Budapest Hotel is still his best

The 2nd movie would have worked better if I was a stoner but still enjoyable and crude and silly - but again perfect for the night

Please Dont Destroy : The Treasure of Foggy Bottom

A silly friends movie that tries to say that friendship is more important than money and the lies we tell ourselves can destroy us

Very simple movie with frat boy humour that wont strain too many brain cells

Oh I've actually seen that

I think you've summed it up perfectly

My kids fiiiinally agreed to watch a movie from my childhood. I gave them some options and they chose The Sandlot (over The Goonies and Little Rascals).

My eldest absolutely loooooved it and gave it a 9.3/10. He thought it was hilarious and now I’ve gotta get him a baseball glove 😂. My youngest thought Hercules was scary so he only rated it a 10 out of 30 Hundred.

It’s still a great movie and I enjoyed it as much as my eldest did.

Watched this last night. Well, i think I slept through most of it so I'm glad there wasn't a test afterwards. Impossible for me to rate. Unsure whether to go back and fill in the blanks.
