I finally got to do a double feature I’ve always wanted to do today.

Home Alone into The Good Son.

Not to overstate it but McCauley Culkin was some sort of child actor. The two parts are so similar but just little shifts in tone and delivery go from being funny and adorable to sinister and menacing.

The Good Son is not a great film by any stretch, it’s slow and very telegraphed but culkin shines.

Only thing I don't like about it is the at the end it's revealed Ledger is some sort of noble descendant so he's all good to keep jousting? Doesn't that go against everything?

No, that’s absolutely not what happens.

Colville (who is Prince Edward in disguise) basically decrees that he is of noble birth. He lies but you know, it’s good to be king, because he respects and likes William because he jousted him earlier

Spending the day rotting in bed so I decided to watch A Knight's Tale, which had recently been recommended to me.

So annoyed at myself for not watching it before! Heath Ledger is so bloody charismatic. At first I was a bit shocked by the costuming and hair but quickly realised that it wasn't meant to be period accurate at all. The soundtrack ****ing slaps and Rufus Sewel's eyes are mega dreamy.
Planning to watch this with my son soon.

How old is your son? You seem to watch good movies together, I’d love to do that with my kids
12... we watched some kids classics over the last four or five years (Goonies, ET, Back to the Future, Princess Bride, Star Wars etc) but he's now making the step up (we watched Die Hard last Christmas, Gremlins this year, Speed, others).

Gah that sounds so fun. My kids are still working on their attention spans but I’m really looking forward to showing them Home Alone and Sandlot Kids and Little Rascals.

This is what I miss being an uncle and not being able to have that kind of moment. I love watching movies (and some tv series + cartoons) with some of my friends kids and seeing their reaction (luckily they haven't said anything is lame) so it's been a successful run.

We Live In Time - drama/romance from the director of Brooklyn (one of my favourite films of the 2010s) starring Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield.

It is told in a very non-linear fashion and centers around this couple and their child. It is revealed very early that Florence Pugh's character has ovarian cancer, so the movie quickly takes a melancholic turn (although it is often circling back to their courtship and other phases).

While not quite on the same level as Brooklyn, it is competently made and features stand out performances from its two leads. Big fan of Pugh and it is great to see her as the dramatic lead again.

7/10

Money Train

Bloody entertaining and a great ride (pardon the pun) and never a dull moment and plenty of twists to keep you guessing.

Brad Pitt does some very good work
Are these two seperate thoughts or are you talking about the Brad Pitt movie Bullet Train and not the 95 heist film starting Woody Harrelson and Wesley Snipes?

Anyone seen Twisters 2024?

How does it compare to Twister 1990’s?
Pretty similar movies to be honest. Better effects. Just kind of mindless fun watching storm chasers. I enjoyed it but probably won't watch again.

Longlegs.

Well it was ok I guess. Someone previously mentioned comparisons to Silence of the Lambs, and I went in reading that comment before watching it. The comparison is kinda justified as there are similarities but it's not as good... Though not many are.

I didnt mind but wont remember it, but the ending is intriguing after reading online natter about it, especially as the director seems to have written off 2 potential meanings.

"Personally I thought the cop was falling under the devil/doll's spell and would likely to have finished off the girl. The ambiguity of the ending gave the film weight, if somewhat unsatisfying. I read online that the Director completley dismissed all the possibilities and it was simply a film about a daughter killing her mother. I dont buy that. The ending is too clever for that. "]

Link to the directors comments? I noted the SoTL comparisons, they’re not mine to be fair but I can see why they’re compared.

Old Dads (2023)

Written and directed by Bill Burr. It's his usual thing of a middle aged man ranting at the political correctness and virtue signalling of Gen Z culture, and also knowing that he can be an arseh*le. The performances are all ok and the plot is fine but there were only a couple of moments that made me laugh. I think his material is better suited to a stand-up comedy routine.

Mrs VG and her sis made me watch this recently as they love it.

I didn’t hate it.

What I did hate was them repeatedly saying this to me:

They did the accent and everything. 🙄
