What does Neil Craig have to do to keep his job?

Look, I've been meaning to dig up your post a month or so ago about 'one more loss like that' and you will 'join us'.

Do i need to go find it or have you changed your mind?

If so - why?

Was it just an emotional comment at the time?

Don't worry BigFella, I've asked her numerous times to back that statement up but she shirks it quicker than a Port Adelaide payment plan to the SANFL.

Petrenko has looked most comfortable as a "small defender", as have Jaensch, Martin, Tambling, Armstrong and Smith. This is no coincidence since it is much easier than playing in the midfield or as a small forward.

We have played Johncock and Doughty as two of the three medium/small defenders so there is usually only room for one of the above. We could move Doughty into the midfield or Johncock forward and see how we go with only one experienced player in our back six. I'm pretty sure I know how that will work out.

I like pups attack on the ball but he has the potential to become the new turnover king. I have a feeling he will start in the back six on Sunday and I hope he proves me wrong.

Decent post. Players don't "deserve" spots, or deserve a month here or there. It might be nice to see what they can do, but we don't necessarily have that luxury. If they want a spot, they have to earn it.

Well there are about 8-10 blokes who have earnt a spot, how would you like to fill the other 12 spots?

Fair call in some respect, but it doesn't mean selecting a player because your supporters think they "deserve" more time.

There are many selections that I don't agree with, but popular opinion is not a good way to pick a side.

They did with Ayres. What makes you think they won't with Craig?

Publicly?

Before his departure?

I don’t think so.

In a book, published 3 or 4 years after the fact maybe, but not before his departure from the club.

When is Ayres gonna write a book? That'd be worth a read.

If I were him, I'd start with reading one first.

But to be honest, i'd think the AFC would simply be a blimp on his football radar. He's had more success than we could wish for in terms of football.

So your inferrence is that the AFC is not professionally run, and decisions are based on personal interest, and not what's in the club's best interest?

This has nothing to do with professionalism. You can be professional and still get things horribly wrong.

Of course the custodians think what they're doing is in the club's best interests. Neil Craig clearly thinks what he's doing is in our best interests.

And so do you.

Yes!

Thats way Trigg has said Craig can coach for as for as the eye can see so he can crap on about how stable the club is under him and how we have had a 10 year coach. This does absolutely nothing for the club in acheiving its goal (premierships).

Sorry Jen but that is right up there with your worst post of all time. The coach stays until the players say they dont want him? That doesnt even work at under 12 level. That is bizarre and so far removed from being successful Im going to shut up now for fear of what else I might write.

No, you asked me when I would jump ship. I took that to mean, when would I stop supporting Craig. I will never "jump ship" but I reserve my right to change my opinion on Craig based on what I see.

Right now, I have faith in Craig and his ability to develop this squad. If the Board decided it was his time to go, I'd be disappointed but I would support their decision. If the players went to management and said "we can't work with him any more" I'd whole heartedly support the "sack Craig" movement. Without having the players support, there's no point in him coaching. Right now, I'm seeing players still excited to play for him and disappointed in themselves when they aren't performing well. I'm seeing players still excited to play together as a group and excited about their future prospects. I'm also seeing some very ordinary form - something that I accept is a part and parcel of where we are now and our stage of development.

I don't buy into this over-analysis of previous history any more. In fact, I'm tired of rehashing the same things over and over again. What's done is done. No amount of bitching and moaning will ever change what's happened in the past. What we have to do is assess where we are right now, and whether we have the ability to move forward.

I think there's undoubtedly many good signs for this squad - some of you have posted as much in the "positive" thread. We seem to have finally found a great ruck prospect in Jacobs. We have an exciting forward line - even if we haven't quite worked out how to utilise them all together yet. When we haven't got half our defensive unit on the side-lines, that also looks good. Our main concern is undoubtedly the mid-field, although I think we have potential there for it to be very good. Get D-Mac back, get Douglas, Sloane, VB, Vince all working at their best to help Thommo out, and we'll be humming. Then we have some really good looking kids to add to the mix. Things aren't as glum as many of you are making out.

From where I sit, I can only see positives moving forward whether it be with or without Craig. I personally can't see how changing the Coach will improve our lot in life - expecting that no matter who is at the helm will have some up and down times ahead of them.

Our goal is competitiveness and finals appearances, sadly.

I am sure what Neil is doing was in the clubs best interests. Last decade. The game moves on.

So Triggy's main driver is what leaves the best personal legacy of him, not what he thinks is the best course of action for the AFC?

OK
